Trailblazur
Hi y’all!!! is there any chance I can somehow successfully pull off growing a carpet of Vallisneria in my background (220 gal long) with six geophagus Sveni in there🤷🏼♂️ please say yes🤣🤣🤣
Colu
It's going to be difficult as the Geos will be constantly digging if you planted the vallisneria in pots then let the runner's spread you would have more of a chance Edited November 2, 2022 by Colu Stupid autocorrect

mynameisnobody
In my experience, you have 2 options. First is to plant the Val and wait a few months for it to take off. At that point, the roots are stronger and it could work. Or purchase 3 or 4 ez planters from the coop. Also purchase same amount of Val from the coop. Drop the plant pots into the ez planter and you’re done. If you don’t have root tabs, purchase some from the coop and insert into pots before dropping into the aquarium. Trailblazur
Thanks. I was thinking the easy planter route. Will they just dig up the runners that spread out from there though🤔
nabokovfan87
Protect it with rocks too. But I had a question, what is your substrate?
Trailblazur
👍🏻👍🏻 substrate is sand. Edited November 3, 2022 by Trailblazur
kahjtheundedicated
I've wondered if you could use egg crate or some other plastic mesh to stop fish from digging up plants. Has anyone tried that? Might be a fine line between deep enough to hide, and shallow enough to let runners do their thing
Trailblazur
Hmm, this IS an interesting idea

Trailblazur
Would they destroy the runners that spread from the anchored plant tho🤷🏼♂️

They just go around the base of the stem. https://www.aquariumcoop.com/products/plant-weights
Trailblazur
Right, but as the Val spreads out, only the original plants would be protected by the weights no?

Correct. You'd have to add weights to new growth as needed.
AndEEss
Look up HDPE geocell/pavers. They'd help keep substrate in place and anchor the plants.
Trailblazur
That’s pretty cool. Do you use those pavers?
