I personally would run two of the large one at each end. But it really depends on your stocking.  Say for instance you only have half a dozen guppys and a dwarf pleco and for that chances are you could get away with a smaller sponge. The more fish the more filtration. If its a 55 gallon just for a single betta well I'd say I would run nothing but an airstone and fill it full of plants

aquaclear seems to get alot of attention, If it was me I always go a tad bigger. So if your tank is 30 Gallon I'd get a hob that will handle 50 to 60G
