I have not run the hygger one but had one similar with dual sponge and ceramic balls in a 10  it always seemed “in your face” when looking at the tank to me  the way the fine sponge clogged it was a pain to clean for me  I switched to two Coop nano sponges one in each back corner  i was able to hide them more effectively and they got the job done. I would use 2 small with heavy bioload. Still less noticeable. yes run both for a few weeks or a month until the sponge is seasoned properly. Remove the hob but keep it in a bucket with an airstone for a day or so to be sure your sponges are doing the job

Edit two small not medium

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong but what I would do is take out the HOB media, place it in the tank next to the sponge, and start running the sponge with the HOB off.

I did that to my 10 when I switched off the HOB to use a sponge instead. Mine was fishless though.  It didn't affect my cycle.
