Question on Sexing Discus

I’ve always heard / read / been told that the only sure-fire way to sex discus short of pulling them out and comparing tubes under a magnifying glass is to wait until they pair off. But as I’ve been watching mine mature, there’s definitely some that are growing a noticeably pointy dorsal, while others are curved. Has anyone used this as a reliable clue when sexing discus before? I’m still a newb to these gorgeous fish…
