  1. I have 3 20 gallon long tanks all with Universal Rock backgrounds installed, they are just sitting in my garage unused. I haven’t had much luck selling them locally, would love to donate them to someone who will use them and appreciate them. Would the co-op like them? Not sure if it’s worth the drive to Colorado, but if you’re in the neighborhood. That said if Coop Doesn’t want them, maybe a member here would like them, maybe someone located a little closer?
  2. Want a hang on overflow for a project I'm working on, unfortunately commercial overflows are still a little to big. I figure I will make one out of PVC. . . but I have some questions. First where to source all black pipe and fittings. also what are maximum flow rates for something like 1/2" and 1/4" inner diameter pipe and tubing? I wont be putting a ton of flow through this and want to keep as small as possible. My idea is a hybrid of theses 2 videos I found (disclaimer: I did not make these videos, nor am I affiliated with their creators.):first cut any "excess" off the elbows and caps of the PVCThen assemble this piece and cement it togethernext cut the top off said piece to limit it's heightthen use a piece of flexible hosing or bent PVC to form the "syphon" portion of the overflow.then cut or drill my desired overflow height. . .
  3. All right, I started the project today. Used some old live sand I bought forever ago, and broke a big live rock from my LFS. Oh yeah, I also bought the tank and heater to ha ha. Had to put the heater in the display which I don’t like, but will try to buy a smaller heater soon. water is a LITTLE cloudy. . .
  4. Want to buy a Fluval EVO 5 and start a nano reef tank. Fish are pretty much out for a tank this small (there are a few that could work maybeeee. . . but I'm ok with inverts). So what corals will grown and what inverts can live in this small tank with the STOCK light ("11000K high-output LED")
  5. I agree with @Fish Folk Wouldn't be nerites in a fresh water tank and if it were mystery snails you would have seen the egg sack thing. . . and if not you would probably have more than 4. . . more like 400. . . Probably snails that came in on plants. . .
  6. I think the co-op should put out a poster with the shapes of the stickers on it, sort of like a collect them all. When you get all the stickers you send them a picture and they give you like a coupon or something. It would be like when the new quarters came out and you could buy the quarter map!
  7. If you haven't already done so, I would recommend just browsing your local library. I have found a number of cool books about aquarium fish and ponds. I enjoyed Jack Wattley's book about discus, and have a pretty cool AquaLog book about apistogramma
  8. I think pretty much anything is safe on the outside of the aquarium. . . though I would just wait till the weather warms up and use spray pain (plasti-dip is my go to).
  9. My wife is always mad when I buy "sticks". . . I had a special moment the other day when a fellow aquarist looked into my tank and said "that's some nice drift wood". . . 😀
  10. I made this collage. . . there are many more stickers on it now haha
  11. I have painted a number of backgrounds usually black or white. I prefer to use plati-dip, it takes a number of coats, but it looks good and is super easy to remove if you want to take it off. I have also painted the bottom of the tank with sand texture which, in my opinion, is a cool option for a bare bottom tank. I have also used poster board, paper, and corrugated plastic taped to the back of the tank. The plastic is nice because its waterproof. I really love my backgrounds from Universal Rock. . . but they are a bit pricey and you have to drain the tank and silicone them in. . . so not the best option for everyone.
  12. Saw this convict cichlid/flowerhorn hybrid at my local shop and. . . couldn't not take her home. I tried to find a male in the batch to go with her, but was unsuccessful. I ended up getting this male "long fin" convict (his fins are nice but long enough to be long fin??? IDK) to pair her with. . . There were some aggression issues initially, however, I put a divider in the tank and they were thick as thieves after that, even when I took it back out. This is there second spawn, the first one they ate. . .
  13. I don't know that I would put apistos with kribs. . . could be an aggression issue. what is the tank size and parameters?
  14. So I have kind of resigned myself to the fact that this will be mostly seasonal, but I’m still trying to get work done so I’m ready when the time comes. Today I put in the lights and mountain the little brackets I will hang the USB air pumps on:
  15. If I'm not mistaken part of the reason to keep males and females is so that males display their breeding colors/exhibit breeding behavior and displays.
  16. It is probably going to depend on what kind of rainbow fish and size of the tank. I have one Spotted Blue Eye Rainbow in with my halfmoon betta at the moment, they seem to get along just fine (this is not intentional stocking. . . its a long story) If the tank is large enough a school of small rainbow fish (like blue eyes) could work.
  17. So an update: the day after putting in the divider they were thick as thieves, always hanging out together etc. So I removed the divider, re-scraped the tank, and added some dither guppies. . . and today. . .
  18. Picked up some more totes, here’s a better idea of what it will look like. 2 27 gallon totes and 1 40 gallon stock tank on the bottom. 3 17 gallon totes up top. Edit: ok, so I didn’t have any foam, I did have some of that reflective bubble wrap, used for like tent pads (I know that some of the bubbles may pop). . . I doubled it up and cut it to size, then threw it under, maybe it will help? I mean technically the totes and the stock tank are only partially touching the ground anyway as the bottoms have ribs, but still I tried?
  19. As far as I know only way to sex discuss is watching the female lay eggs or the method you mentioned above.
  20. Ok so I got the divider in, just held there by driftwood substrate and the caves. The female immediately found a spot she could fit though (space created by the uneven background), however, doesn’t appear the male can fit through. They seem to be hanging out a bit and the female isn’t just hiding in the corner. . .Also they dug a big hole and ripped up all the plants haha
  21. I posted this over on fishlore but figured I would post here as well to get ya'lls opinions. Ok so I got an odd/unique cichlid (convict flowerhorn hybrid) that I want to breed with a unique but common cichlid (long fin convict).See this thread/pictures:Help sex my mystery cichlids (South American) | American Cichlid Forum | 513361Anyway. . . pretty sure the hybrid (red) is female, and I think the convict is a male. . . they seemed to interact fine initially, but now the hybrid just hides on the far left side of the tank, looks like she may have been nipped a few times, though I haven't seen much actual aggression.Today and yesterday I put in some caves, first I used home made pot caves, she wouldn't use the, then I put in some "cichlid caves", but she wont use them either. . . and the convict can fit in them anyway. . .I tried putting the hybrid in a breeder box just to make sure she wasn't getting beaten up. . . but after about an hour she seemed like she might beat herself up more by trying to escape than the convict would. . .I could make a divider out of egg crate/light diffuser. . . not really wanting to take out the drift wood (or cut it in half) but that might be my only option. . .I can't move either to another tank as no other tanks are heated, plus my other fish would quickly become food. . . so think a divider is best option? UPDATE: I cut some egg crate light diffuser before work tonight, tomorrow I will. . . cut the driftwood in half. . . and install the divider. Might try grabbing some guppies on my next day off as well.
  22. So change of plans, the wife and I came to an agreement I can keep all the fish I wanted in the shed, but she didn’t want a space heater. . . Something about the house not burn down I don’t really know. . . But anyway I think that means tanks are pretty much out so tubs are in! Time to breed some rice fish! here’s an idea of what I’m going for, Will have more tubs to fill in the empty spaces:
  23. My thoughts: I would probably just connect all the tanks to one central sump and simply change 25% of total water volume (about 396 gallon) daily. Would have the incoming fresh water go directly into the sump (near the "outlet" going to the tanks) and the outgoing water coming from the sump as well (near the "inlet" where the water is returning from the tanks). I would have the water change slowly so that the ambient temperature/heater (placed in the sump) could compensate. Obviously this assumes all your tanks are running on the same parameter. It also means that if one tank gets a parasite/illness then all the tanks are exposed. These are just my initial thoughts. Keep in mind I don't personally have an auto water change system/nor have I ever had one.
