You want something that will allow you to build some verticalitity front to back, but you want something that won't be too stiff?
What is your stocking like, undetermined or do you have specific care needs?
I would think if you want something "more natural" in terms of visuals, the seachem substrates are pretty good. They have fine or larger particle sizes in a variety of colors. I don't think something like the caribsea natural sands works for what you're asking.
The chunky colorful gravel and small pebbles might not be the best choice either because they will tend to be too stiff and not so subtle over time.
Sometimes if you have a specific feature you're trying to add into the tank you can add a retaining wall under the substrate as well to try to keep it into position. My stocking will be very light for a while. I’m looking at Peapuffers and Rummynose.

In previous recycling threads, I wondered about ACO plant bags. I tested them under a tap, and the water flow is continuous.
Yes! That’s what I want a sloped environment I have been doing a lot investigating you’re right people put substrate in plant bags and tested them under top and the water flows right through it!! I forgotten thank you so much!!
Im still not sure what substrate to use ~ can I just use plain aquarium gravel?

I hope my topic makes sense. I need a substrate so I can shape my hill but it really isn’t going to show later on.
Does this make sense at all? I have a 20 gallon long.

Me too! I’m not painting did that for years ~ 55 gallon 125 gallon and I didn’t like it after a while and had to scrape it all off😩😂
This is with the light on. But I think I’m going with this background:
HIDBEA Window Privacy Film, UV Blocking Heat Control Removable Frosted Glass Window Film Static Cling Opaque Door Decorative Sticker for Home Bathroom Office(17.5 x 78.7 Inch, Matte Blue) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07YZFMBPY/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_AXAR2BHKHKS82H40XRR1?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

I prefer a plain background, but it's your tank. If you like it that's all that matters.

The black window cling stuff. It's super quick, and if I want something else, it just peels right off.
You don't really need to spray it with water even though the directions say so. It'll stick pretty well regardless.
Just roll it onto the tank, press out any bubbles, then trim it to the tank edge with an exacto blade.
It really was that easy I love it! However mines a bit busy for a tank I think. What do you think? This is all I have a whole roll of it so I thought I’d try it ~ Too bad we couldn’t get a little tiny role of all different colors😂

I have a woods scene that I am hardscaping now in such a way as to make it appear as thought the image has entered the tank space and my future fish will be living in the forest.
I would love to see this!! I saw once where someone’s background made you believe if you followed their path of white sand, it would end in a cave, the background on the tank!
It was way cool!

I paint matte black. I have 4 newly acquired (January) tanks that have had no background for months because I do tend to do my painting outside (fumes) and it's too cold in winter where I live to do that type of thing. It has been driving me crazy having no background for months, but it'll give me a chance to totally rescape when I do it, so I'm looking forward to that.
I hate painting 😂😂😂

Have to pay attention to which side the design is on (because sometimes the "stick" side is faded/reverse design). Most of the time we're just trying to hide cords/equipment, so the privacy film works (no real color, mine has a pattern/irridescence to it but there are of course lots of options there). It can be easily removed and changed. You could even buy black- it exists but solid colors would likely show the bubbles if you didn't get them out upon the install. Designs are far more forgiving. Plus it's waterproof.
I would’ve never thought of this!! I have some too I should try it. Because painting I can’t ever do that again ~ I change my mind often and it’s a bitch to get off.

I now remember why I used to paint the back of my tanks because putting on this background is a pain!! I only have a 29 gallon long it fits but it’s curly and it’s shiny I hated shiny, and it won’t stick it is annoying as hell please tell me after all these years there is something, better easier and not shiny😡

So, I always put rocks right on the glass. Carefully. But I've done this for years with 20+# rocks with no problem. I do this for two reasons:
1) Aesthetics - rocks look more natural when they emerge from the substrate. Putting them on top of a layer first often makes them look odd to me. This is true for the light diffuser as well. Plus, if you have diggers, they can uncover it and that's just ugly too.
2) Stability - back to those diggers, if you have digging species of fish or snail and fairly extensive rockwork, I have been told (please note, I do not have first hand experience with this - nearest is a friend with a SW tank there this happened) that the digging can cause the rockwork to be come unstable and it can tumble. Sometimes even scratching or breaking the glass. Plus there is the smaller scale danger of crushing your inhabitants.
To avoid both of these issues, I always create a stable structure first (at least with the first layer), and then backfill with substrate. That said, I am intrigued by @Ken's idea of using the "plastic canvas". It is so thin that I don't think you are likely to run into any of the issues I've raised. I've just never heard of anyone using it before. This might be a game changing innovation for me! Thanks, Ken!
Very informative thank you so much! I have always put everything directly on the substrate or the tank bottom as well. I’ve just been watching some YouTube videos and that is not what they do so I started trippin🤭😂

So I was watching a YouTube video but it was not in English and it looks like he put big square pieces of Styrofoam underneath his big rocks Instead of directly on the tank floor. Can you put Styrofoam in water?

So I’m going to use this space for my new tank. I know I have two other threads and I can’t always find them so if this is in the wrong spot please feel free to move it. Where I’m at now ~ my tank is set up with my stand with plywood that everybody helped me figure out and I’m going to be buying plastic soon. And then I will be filling it up🤭 It’s 29 gallon long and I’m going to be using white sand and I would like to get Pea Puffers and Rummynose and that’s it for a while. I found some rocks I think I had in my other tanks but I just wanna make sure these items are okay. So please tell me what you think. I can’t remember how we would test something before we put it into our tanks….
I have some white sand that I found and wonder what you guys thought about if I could use it in my aquarium💕

Hi everyone,
I just setup a brand new 20 long with plants, lights, sponge filer, a Finnex Stingray light and the whole 9 yrds. from Aquarium Coop. Everything is planted, turned on, and so far so. I am using ActivFlora substrate (I think that's it) It's black with small particles and very gritty. Anyway, I was planning to let the tank go for a few months to let plants establish, get some algae growth and generally just mature a bit before I add fish, and a clean up crew. STT you know? Anyway I checked my water parameters because there is a light haze in the water which I assumed was an ammonia bloom from the substrate beginning to leach. Ammonia is 0 and there are no nitrates (thank you Aquarium Co-op test strips) My question is should I add a few pumps of easy green or anything else, maybe even a few mL of ammonia to get things rolling in that tank. I'm guessing I might be getting ahead of myself here as I this is my first plated tank, but I just want to confirm my new plants don't need any supplements nutrients at this point being there are no fish in the tank.
Thanks.
Your set up sounds awesome! But you know that saying, it’s all a lie without pictures♥️😂

If you can get ahold of Seachem Prime you can does every couple days until you bacteria catches up with the cycle. With Prime you'll still get ammonia or nitrites reading but it binds it so its not dangerous for 48 hours.
I did not know this ~ actually I might’ve known it years ago😋
@BATI hope everything is stabilized and going well for you now! The people here are so nice and wise ~ it’s awesome!
