She's smaller than my girl. Who is she in with ? I worry more about mine not getting enough food since I've moved her to the community tank ( she sulked not really moving round for weeks at first) so competing with the tetras will have been a challenge for her.

My girl is with neon tetras, but she’s feisty so the tetras aren’t a problem for her. As for your girl: Bettas are super smart. Both of my bettas (I have a male by himself) are trained to eat at a food ring.

When I first brought my girl home, it took her less than 10 minutes to figure it out. When I want to give her betta pellets she comes to the food ring and I give them to her. Then I feed everyone else.

One of the pictures I posted shows her under a black “thing” that’s the floating feeding ring, I got it from Amazon.

If you don’t have one already my bettas LOVE the zoomed floating betta logs, your girl might enjoy it too, gives a spot for herself  🙂

  2. I have a female betta in my community tank. First time I’ve had a betta with other fish. She is a chunker, because she chows down with the rest of the community fish. Should I take her out for a bit and fast her?

Ignore the green water. I’m working on it lol4F0BC93D-6F6C-4C9F-829B-8E22FDFCE5E3.jpeg.022a90512ca53647e67ee0d1988d7a9e.jpeg3442615A-0D52-4F09-8157-2EABD717F510.jpeg.8625d9ab00f5ff09dea18215878c3483.jpegEC91CB10-1343-4E6A-A1C1-0969748A4110.jpeg.e618092aa59acdcee438f6f17ae132c3.jpeg73EABA56-EA5D-42EE-8821-F27490FC6B88.jpeg.7d204d2d2b6493eed06fab26d78f9767.jpeg

So, I was wrong. Apparently it’s only me that has this problem! I do apologize, I thought having to reset after unplugging it was the norm!

Maybe try picking a different temperature and then unplugging it to see what it does? If it is faulty then it might be a good idea to say something just to give them a heads up.

I feel the same and my window tanks are pea soup if I don’t use the green killing machine. No fun to not see our fish.

Oh if you do go with UV monitor ammonia. As it quickly kills bulk algae it may spike.

Can you use it if you don’t have a HOB filter?

And I would stop using root tabs, potassium or any type of fertilizer. Green water comes from excess nutrients available so adding more adds to issues.

I started using them because I thought there was imbalance from too much light and not enough nutrients.

Generally speaking, the less you do the sooner green water goes away. Green water is a highly sought-after food for many small critters. Once they find it, they feast and before long they eat it all and the green water goes away. When you do large water changes, you're typically removing the very critters who will eat the suspended algae and then the algae keeps going. Just sit back, relax, ignore the greenness and know it's not hurting anything, and is helpful to the fish in nearly every case.

I was only doing large water changes because that was what someone suggested the last time I posted.  I don’t mind the green water to an extent. I know it can be good, I just don’t like when it’s so green that I can’t see the fish unless they come close to the glass. And it’s hard to keep an eye on my plants when I can’t see them. I thought Val grew really easy, but in my tank it’s struggling and I can only see how it’s doing when I drain some water.

I would drop to 1 light 8 hours 4 on 4 off 4 on. To little light will not give your plants a chance to absorb enough of the excess nutrients   Having the siesta in my experience helps plants thrive.
I would also do my best to gravel vac well and weekly to remove any excess detritus releasing nutrients to your tank. Then I would wait. Green water tends to clear itself up if you are very patient.
2nd option that I also use on tanks with no background directly in front of full sun west facing windows is a AAA Green Killing Machine 9 watt UV.  No assembly other than sticking the outflow on and plugging in then it suction cups on the inside.  I get mine from Chewy.  It does not fix the cause and when you stop using it green water comes back.  However to help alleviate your frustration quickly this is a great quick fix option.
Hope that helps. Although green water is unpleasant when trying to see our tanks it is not harmful to fish and great for fry.
you could also add a hob filter with seachem purigen in to remove excess organics. it may help.  And I would stop using root tabs, potassium or any type of fertilizer. Green water comes from excess nutrients available so adding more adds to issues.

    Thank you 🙂

Yeah, the fish are doing great and I don’t mind the green water to an extent. I know it can be good, I just don’t like when it’s so green that I can’t see the fish unless they come close to the glass. If I drop a wafer in the back for the panda corys I can’t even see it sink to the bottom

  8. *Long post alert*
Ugh I am so frustrated right now. I do not have a knack for planted aquariums. This isn’t my first post about green water, starting to consider just giving up and getting fake plants. Before I list my tank info, I do realize I may have my tank overstocked, but the fish are all thriving.

    Info:

    20 gallon tank (standard)

    5 panda corys

    8 ember tetras

    1 endler

    1 hill stream loach

    1 Nerite snails

    Driftwood

    Pogo octopus plant

    Tiger lotus

    Crypts

    Struggling jungle Val

    Struggling ludwigia (barely any left)

1 medium aquarium co-op sponge filter

1 nano aquarium co-op sponge filter

2 Finnex stingray 2 lights (most of the time only one is on)

Timer that is set from 6pm to 10pm

    No direct sun light

    Feed once a day

    Aquarium co-op easy green

    Occasionally will use root tabs

    Seachem potassium

Ive tried daily water changes, big and small.

I’ve already decreased my light time twice.

I could be wrong, but it looks like you have green water. How much/often are you doing water changes and I'm guessing you're dosing ferts for plants? And how long are you running your lights? Is this tank by chance getting any direct sunlight or in a room that gets a lot of sunlight?

Yes, the water is green and cloudy. Because of the green water, I’ve been changing almost 50% the last couple weekends, but I’ve also been taking out a little (no more then 25%) here and there during the week. I cut down on the ferts to try to help. My light comes on at 4 pm and goes off at 10 pm, with no direct sunlight.

I agree with at @Tihshho. More water changes wiki goo a long way. Also how are you cleaning your sponge filter. I don’t see debris in the water.

I took that picture the day before I decided to try cleaning my sponge filter. And cleaning my sponge filter was a “well I haven’t tried this yet” kind of moment, and when I did clean it I was shocked by how dirty it was.

If you have the flow higher, you're pulling more water through the sponge. If you're pulling more water, then you're pulling more muck. So that rate of flow is directly tied to how often you need to clean the sponge if your have very chunky bits in the water.

Yeah. Cloudy water like that (assuming it's not just a photo with a blurry lens) is going to mean you need to run some fine filter pad via HoB a few days or change water just to clear it up.

    Thank you for explaining 🙂

The cleanliness of the tank glass and the possibility of a blurry lens could be slightly contributing to how the water looks, but 95% is how the water actually looks

    I totally understand the frustration.

The way I usually handle that issue is to go ahead and clean the filter constantly, every 2-3 days. After a few times it should equalize the bit and the tank/filter work a bit better together. If you're still having issues you might be running too much flow and just clogging it that way.  (you can run a sponge on one size, add an air stone on the other to keep circulation, but lessen the load on the sponge itself.

A secondary option, go out and grab a cheap HoB and run that for a day or two and then remove it.  That should help as well to let the sponge clear out the chunks if the tank is just filled with mulm or something that is clogging the sponge.

I was definitely thinking I should try cleaning the sponge every couple days to see if that helps and I was also thinking about getting a temporary HOB.
I’m don’t understand what you mean about “running too much flow” through the sponge filter.

What's your mulm situation like? Do you gravel vac?

I feel like my mulm isn’t bad, when I've been doing water changes recently I suck up what’s laying on the top of the gravel, but I do properly gravel vac occasionally. This tank is only 4 months old though (3 if you don’t count the cycling).

This was Sunday when I was trying to get a pic of the Endler I got. I originally tried cleaning the filter because I’m not having any luck clearing up that water.

  11. @Baphijmm I have a 20 gallon tall, the only reason I didn’t want another one is because I don’t know where I would put it. I’m finally happy with the way the tank looks.

@lefty o I do see your point. I was hoping I wouldn’t have to move stuff around again, but it might be inevitable.

@drewzero1 I have 6 panda corys and 8 ember tetras. But now that I’m thinking about it. The last time I cleaned it I added stuff, I moved stuff around, etc. I probably should have been on top of it more for a few day after. It looks like I might have to get another one, I just don’t know where to put it. My plants are FINALLY cooperating with me, so I didn’t want to disturb them.

  12. If my one sponge filter seems to be overwhelmed, do I have to get another one or can I just replace the one I have with a bigger one?

Background: I have a 20 gallon tank with a medium aquarium co-op sponge filter. While trying to solve the mystery of my cloudy greenish tank, I decided to just see if cleaning the sponge filter would help. Well that thing was DIRTY! For reference the last time I cleaned it was 2 weeks ago.

  13. So when I got my panda corys about a month ago there were 4 decent sized and 2 smaller ones. I just noticed that one of the small ones looks like he might have been bullied a little. He’s lethargic and his tail has a small tear. Im thinking about setting up a “hospital” tank that I could make sure he’s getting enough to eat and put some aquarium salt in it. Since corys are social, should I bring over the other small one with him (perfectly fine, not getting bullied) or should he be by himself? Another idea, should I put him in a breeder box in the aquarium to see if some rest and food will help him?
Also if I do need to set up a hospital tank, I don’t have an extra sponge filter, can I get away with just putting an air stone in the separate tank?

  14. I was wondering how you make sure a Nerite snail gets enough food in a community tank. Right now mine is by herself with my betta. If I were to get some for my community tank that has corys and a hillsteam loach, how would I make sure it’s not getting out competed for food?

I know they eat algae and other stuff in the tank, but I still feed my current one a shrimp food wafer every now and then.
