what filter could you run that could support a 400+

I think the cheapest way would be like 10-15 sponge filters 😆 is that being to cheap? I think so

You could do a few sponge filters and one canister filter.

  2. I have no experience with this big of a tank but the absolute cheapest way I could think of is to get like 30-40 concrete blocks and a piece of plywood  as a stand. (About $150-200)

and get the tank used from Craigslist or something. (About $1000-1500) I’m not sure of this price it’s just a guess.

and the equipment like lights, filter, heater would b (about $400)

and you could stock it like @Spewing_nonsense_ said for. (about $50-60)

for a total of at the high end $2160 dollars. But I wouldn’t be surprised to spend around $2500 in the end.

Does this sound reasonable/realistic to you guys?

  3. Hello everyone! Just thought I would give a day three update.

    here they are012C437C-C698-4E70-A2BC-C9A4F65A40BA.jpeg.ab997fc757c61ea80b7542b03ab6d695.jpeg

they had a HUGE growth spurt yesterday and now instead of being microscopic there are Super tiny 🤣.

I think they are going to be golden when they grow up, they have a light color foot and there shells are a little yellow color with black spots.

When I took this photo I was counting them and I counted 64 snails. Which is good for me, I didn’t really want hundreds and this seems more manageable.

(I actually have more than 64 because I found some baby snails on the bottom of the tank the rest were floating in, so I might have like ten more than 64)

I was checking on my rainbow shiners today and I think there are eggs on the bottom. They have been in quarantine for about 2.5 weeks. I have kept them at room temp, about 72 F and done frequent water changes about 50% every day or every other day to keep my ammonia levels down. One of them is quite a bit darker than the others, more orange, and several have red highlights in their dorsal fins.

The little round silica gel looking things are fish eggs? I've only kept live bearers before. I suppose I could collect them and place them in a Lee's specimen container with an airstone? I didn't expect breeding in quarantine.

Yes those are eggs! You could totally try to put them in a container with an air stone. I haven’t kept these fish before so I’m not sure how long they incubate, but a quick google could answer that.

Just put them in the container and set the air stone in there so there is some circulation in the box but don’t put way to much, also replace the water every once and a while.

The spawn failed to be fertilized I must have pulled the eggs during the process. But sure enough 3 days ago I had eggs again and now I believe I’m on day 2 or 3 of wrigglers. I left them with the parents currently. I will probably move them this weekend I’ll have to figure out where to move them.  Now I’ll be able to keep updates coming fingers crossed

You can remove and place them in a damp papertowel if you want to keep them and then place in a container and keep moist.

    Like this?

is this right? Should I have holes in the lid? How long until they hatch? I have seen people float these containers, should I do that?

sorry for all the questions 🤣 I’m excited

  8. I’m so excited! I was going to clean one of my tanks when I found a Clutch of Mystery Snail eggs! I haven’t cleaned the tank in a while so the water level got low enough I guess!

The only problem is, I don’t know what I should do now? Do I remove them? How do you remove them? What do you put them in? And anything else I need to know should help a lot!

  9. I have a API master test kit and I was wondering if they ever expire? How long does it take to expire?

I ask this question because I just realized today that the test kit that I have is from 2008!🤣 I think it might definitely be expired but I’m not sure.

I just tied the actual razor blade before going to chemicals and to my surprise it actually worked (whole lot better than the plastic scraper) I had to scrub each spot roughly 5 times a bit more on the thicker spots but after about a hour and 15min. It looks a whole lot better a whole lot of scraping but it was probably worth not resorting to chemicals

My go to is always just a razor blade running under water. Works ever time😁

  11. My dad had the best idea I have ever heard of!

    Its a Motorized algae scraper.
think of a Mag-Float algae scraper but the piece that’s goes on the inside of the tank (the scraper part) is a round very thin algae scraper pad with a some strong magnets. The piece on the outside would have a motor and some more strong magnets. You would turn it on and the magnets would rotate causing the inside scraper pad to spin, and clean all the algae on the glass.

The thin and round scraper pad would cause minimal water disturbance, and since it’s motorized it could scrub off even really hard green spot algae!

i feel this would be a awesome and a very easy way to clean your glass.
