  1. So I had a family member that wanted to get fish for their kids.  Asked if I had any suggestions and or equipment.  They didn’t want to invest a lot of money just in case the kids didn’t stay interested in the hobby.  I gave them a twenty gallon long, stand, light, undergravel filter, air pump, HOB, gravel, heater, and food and some swordtails and cory catfish.  After almost 2 years they called and asked ….     Wait for it…….   Here you go……if I wanted to buy everything.  Hoping to get $50.00 for it all in a yard sale.

  2. So, I’m assuming we are talking about fish-less cycles?
I have never done that.  I setup a tank, add my Prime or API stress coat move one of my filters or half the media from a filter maybe a sponge.   I keep extra filter pads or sponges in Hang On Back filters.  If temperature is good I move the fish.  Don’t feed for 14-18 hours and feed lightly over the next week or so.

  3. For a  while mine was a fish I hadn’t spawned.  I was actively competing in my clubs BAP/SAP.  I don’t remember now if it was 2 years or 3 years in a row I won breeder of the year with the most spawns. The problem is my clubs rules state in case the club wants to inspect or verify the spawn, The parents must be kept.  Some clubs don’t require this.  Also for more difficult fish you must submit a report along with the spawning log.

  4. Maybe I missed this….  How old is the tank?  How long has the tank been setup and how long have fish been in the tank?  How old is the filter and media in it?  Do you use substrate?  What kind?  When testing, was it before a feeding?   Feeding the fish and testing 30-45 minutes afterwards you can see a little spike.  On a newly setup you can test right before feeding and then an hour afterwards and then again right before next feeding.
    Good Luck

have Observed every pleco I’ve ever owned chewing on a piece of Wood once in a while

I agree.   When I spawn plecos…. Any type I place a small piece of drift wood.

  6. Medications are one thing….  But API Stress Coat and Prime….should never be used on a food fish… so would not ever release.

Cold water -When I kept them I just remember they move/destroy plants and wanted cooler water with lots of oxygen.
    Good Luck

  7. Just cut it.   Rubber band it to a rock, veggie clip or whatever.   I have had some fish like the skin.   I figure what’s the harm.   So I leave it.  Cucumber- zucchini- squash….   I would use butternut squash a lot for breeding….   Once the fish realize it is a food source, a lot of fish will eat it.

  8. Well I don’t have or have ever had or used the SeaChem filter.  I have used and own a couple of the AquaClear.  In fact I have one that is about 20 years old.  And still running.  20 years ago they called it the AquaClear 500.  I guess it moves around 500 gallons per hour. I think with regular maintenance most filters will run for years - many years ….
    Good Luck

  9. Hmmm.

    any other tank mates?
As for the PH, are you adjusting it to 6.4 or is that normal out of the source?
I just looked at my spawning report for when I spawned them.  I kept mine at 7.4 PH.  I spawned them at 79.    But I kept them at 75-76 when not breeding them.  Also maybe try a non traditional floating plant.  Najas grass or something like that.
