  1. The tech isn't required it's just mostly short cuts. Less water changes, overstocking, advance plants all become a reality with gadgets. However, almost everything we put in a tank isn't required. Heaters aren't needed if your room is steady temperature and in the proper range. Lights aren't required or even have to be anything fancy. Fake plants work just fine as do low tech lights. Filters allow u to keep more fish with upkeep. If ur into the work totally aren't a requirement to have a filter at all. The only thing required in the hobby is clean water.

  2. I just set up a 20 gallon tall and month or so back and moved in some season deco and sponge filter. I now have planted it and placed a handful of shrimp and a nerite snail. I am wondering about breeding ideas for that tank. I had considered BN plecos or maybe cory's. Anyone have better ideas? I am also considering it only being a shrimp colony.

  3.

Today I did something I have never done before. After talking to my LFS I decided it was time to experiment with harvesting some of my baby swords on the runners.

I had previously Ordered rockwool and baskets.

I then took my lids off for easy access to the runners.

I selected the runner with the largest growths on it.

I then snipped the runners and took the plant lings and placed them in the rockwool and then into the baskets.

I have now taken the finished product to the LFS and left 10 of them with them. We are gonna see how well they sell before I collect more. I was able to get 20 viable plants off this runner and took the 10 best to the shop. The rest are now in a separate tank waiting to see if they take off. I would be interested in hearing any feedback on this if anyone has a better way to go about this. I spent 20 dollars on 55 rockwool and basket setups. Do you all think this is a nice touch or not worth the money?

  4. Well one super big thing in your favor is it isn't cold! I think the heaters running is one of the biggest factors. So if the temperature in your house is rising especially in that room I think 6 might be reachable? And as bill said I'd turn off any extra power drawls.

  5. I personally think instant cycling is a bit of strange thing. I have tried it and found it really only made me take risks I wouldn't normally take and ended up with super bad water. I think it's a great idea to kick start things a bit shaving off a few days of time till it's cycled. I personally like to do the handful of fish till it cycles then slowly adding more approach. I do think adding a precycled filter can definitely give you a massive leg up and with monitoring could easily see you through a partially stocked load.

  6. I think testing 0 in nitrates simply means you are using all of it up in plant growth which means you aren't getting max growth but that isnt a bad thing. I would think ideally if you was to run ur light 8 hours running out 7 or so hours in would be the most ideal balance. For me as a pure blooded American I tend to force feed my plants about 10,000 % the needed nutrients 🤣 so my nitrates stay high. Like stupid high 😉
