I haven't gone to town to get plain gravel yet.

I put some young males in the photo booth to see how they looked and got a few shots that are closer to the actual colors on the fish.  Jimmy's video helped because I learned how to turn down the exposure on my iphone and allow the light from above to show the fish.

@smoore I was thinking about doing the same with a 2.5 gallon tank I have sitting around.  If I had a suggestion as to your setup, I'd either go with minimal, few well washed substrate (something like the old-school aquarium gravel that has like zero dust), and I'd let it sit and the tank settle a day before putting any photography subjects in there.  Also, get the glass real clean the day before, inside and out. Doing it the day before allows the stuff you cleaned off the glass to settle and get you clearer water.

For me, I find some fish very very hard to shoot, like endlers, and some tetras, because they are always in motion and my camera's focus cant keep up with them.  My personal hope is that the smaller tank allows them less room to wander and gives me a fixed space/range of focus.

Anyway, good luck and post back any photos you take!

Not impossible, but hard work and your mileage may vary. I did this on a 125G I picked up used off of CraigsList. You'll need to use cerium oxide and a good drill with a buffing attachment. A 2.5 has thin glass, so I'd worry about it breaking from the pressure of the buffing. Also, it's a small surface to work on if the scratches are inside.

A new 2.5 gallon might cost less than the supplies and manpower you'd wind up putting into this.

However, if it's an acrylic tank, then something like Novus scratch remover will do the trick more easily than working with glass.

Thanks for the info.  I'll think about it.  The scratches might not be a big deal because I'm just having fun with this project.

    Thankyou for your input!!!🙂

The 2.5 I have is a used tank and has some scratches.  I wonder if they are "buffable"?  I used the female guppies first because they are calmer than the males.  I need to try a few different things to get good pics, I think.  Watching Jimmy's videos now.  I'm using an old iphone because it's the only camera I own.

    My plan is to;

    • get some plain black substrate, like you suggested.... not used from their tank.
    • use white light only
    • remove plants and rock and go with the minimal look
    • use fresh water that has set out for a day or so

I wrapped 3 sides of the tank with a black garbage bag and I was trying to hide wrinkles with the the plants and rock.... we'll see what it looks like, I guess.  I can always paint the tank if needed.

Anyway, this has been a fun project!

Jimmy has a few videos on the topic.  There's one where he talks about putting the lens right on the tank itself.  I can't find it, but it's a good one!

  5. Yesterday I built a fishy photo booth using a 2.5 aquarium, black substrate, a rock and a few plants.  I put some guppy girls in there today to see what I could get in the way of action shots and I could use some suggestions.

    My thoughts;

    • I used their aquarium water to fill the photo booth and there are too many particles from the substrate that I scooped up.... lots of girls swimming around has stirred the pot.

This aquarium is too small for a sponge filter (I think)... do I need to do lots of water changes?

The fish won't be in here long, just for a photo shoot.

    • Lighting is not quite right.  I'll need to figure it out because these girls look washed out in here.  My eyes pick up much more color.

Maybe I'll look for that video that Jimmy did....

I used the light setting with all of the colored lights on these pics, except one picture which I used only white light.

    • Too many girls in the tank?

Thanks for responses all . Not to worried about the fish but they keep getting to the plants. I will keep checking local classifieds to see If I can find something to cover them.

Poultry wire (chicken wire) comes in a vinyl coated variety.  Here's the link to the Home Depot.  You can search the internet for other sources, including fb marketplace near you or craigslist.  It's summer time so people may have extra after their projects.

I got requests from locals to buy about 70 total CPDs this week but because of a long period of low egg counts from an aging breeding group I don't think I have that many right now. Maybe I'll pick up another group and start a second CPD breeding tank. People seem to be getting tired of dead CPDs from the LFS and apparently people have been recommending me as a source for healthy CPDs. What kind of a crazy person doesn't like CPDs?

  8. I use auto feeders and Xtreme pelleted foods... different foods for different fish.  The feeder drops some of the "Nano" and some of the "Slow-Sinking Community".  Everyone gets a bite.   You'll need to evaluate which foods work best for your fish.  Be sure to put your feeder away from the sponge filter, if you use one.  The tiny bubbles from the sponge filter can create a food clog.😁

  9. Water sprite floating on the surface is wonderful for guppy breeding.  Not only can the fry hide in the roots and the foliage, but the female likes to be alone while giving birth and she will often swim up into the plants while giving birth.  I have planted aquariums and use CaribSea Echo Complete.  The fry will sometimes hide in the substrate when they are a couple of days old. I use Sponge filters from Aquarium Co-Op for filteration and have a light on a timer.

@smoore thank you so much!! My cat is 12 pounds and 10 years old so I’ll have to think about her capabilities. She has short legs and a long body, which doesn’t make her a great jumper. 😄

She does get time outside almost every day (we have a fenced in yard, I keep an eye on her and often go out with her, and she wears a tracking collar). That time outside makes a big difference when it comes to night time whining.

They love nature.  I think fresh air helps all of us sleep better. 🙂

@smoore funny. I feel bad for people who have cats like this. Neither of my boys do this to me. lol!

Mine used to do this.  Now I make sure she gets enough attention and exercise during the day and she sleeps soundly all night.

@smoore oh wow! Can you give us a material’s list? 😄

    @Hobbit  I have a small cat (9 pounds).  Depending on the confidence of the cat, sizes may need to be adjusted.  The height you want to lift your cat will vary also.  I used;

Black 1/2 pipe from big box store

    2 pipe flange

4 black screws (only two on each flange go into the stud in the wall, the other two are for aesthetics)

    1 -2" nipple

    1 - 3" nipple

    6 -6" nipples

    5 - 8" nipples

    6 "T"s

    8 - 90 degree elbows

    1 -8 foot long pine board 1 by 12"

    2 placemats from IKEA

    varathane to seal the wood.

*I drew a pattern of the wood stairs onto the pine board and cut them out with a jigsaw (bandsaw would have been easier)

*drilled a hole for the pipe to go through the wooden step

*routed out the area for the traction (placemat cut into circles)

    *sanded each step

    *sealed wood with varathane

*glued the place mats into place

*put the ladder together while wiping the pipes down (they're dirty!  You can seal them if you want)

*mounted it to the studs on the wall using a stud finder

It took me awhile to build it, but I really enjoyed the process.

I've built her a few other ladders and she enjoys using them.  My goal is to give her enough exercise each day, that she will sleep through the night.  All treats and food are given up high.  She is only 3 years old and very active.  As she ages, I'll need to make it easier for her.  Right now this works.  I laugh when she uses the runway shelves high above me. The newest shelf that I built has a PVC pipe wrapped in jute as well as a fence to keep the treats from hitting the wall and landing on the floor.  I really prefer this type of shelf because it is much easier to toss the treats up to her and have them stay there.  LOL!

Beautiful setup! Did you make that pipe staircase yourself??

@Hobbit; Thank you!  Yes.  I enjoy a variety of hobbies.  I like to build things to enhance my critters' experiences.

This is exactly what I was going to ask.  This goes directly on my Honey Do list.  Just sent the pics to my hubs.  We’ve talked about doing something like this several times and haven’t ever gotten around to it.  It’s past time.

@Odd DuckThank you!  Yes, I built it myself.  It's been so much fun watching her get the spiders from the vaulted ceilings.  I have trouble reaching that high with my swiffer.

I'm lazy and don't clean out my sponge filters often, but I cleaned the one in the 40 today and it made the blackest poop coffee ever.

    No pics, sorry. 😉

I also dug out Pooka's (my featherfin catfish) cave, because she's gotten so big she had to squeeze into it.

My plants LOVE that water.  I take it outside and poor it on a different plant each time.
