  1. I'll have to try reverse respiration next time. I noticed the anubias still had snail eggs that survived after the peroxide dip.
  2. Yeah, I've learned the hard way that most "easy" plants do not do well in my water. I currently have a Java fern that has 5 small leaves. It's taken 6 months to get those leaves. I keep hoping one day it will go crazy and grow. Maybe I'll go with vals again. Hard water is the reason I usually have only anubias and crypts.
  3. Last Sunday, I ordered a few things from Aquarium co-op. My order arrived right before Thanksgiving. I received an Amazon Sword, Crypt tropica, and a Dennerle snail catcher. Normally, I'm all for snails but I had a population explosion in my tank. For three days I have been catching snails (sooooooo many snails). Then I pulled out my driftwood and anubias, put them in a bucket of water, added some hydrogen peroxide, and soaked them for a bit. I should be able to keep the population more balanced now. Now I just have to decide, vals, water sprite, or both?
  4. I can't decide what plant (or plants) I want to add in the background of my 10 gallon. The sword and crypt are new. My current goal is adding more plants mass to my tank for. Plus, with my hard water, what grows decently for me is limited.
  5. I have to look for it, but a member of a forum I use to be on more posted about using excel and hydrogen peroxide to treat a tank for algae. Like a one two punch. I'm leaving for work, but I will look later when I get a chance.
  6. Find a piece of solid wood furniture and refinish it. That's probably the cheapest way to do it. You can paint or stain it to match your decor. Another option is to find someone locally to custom build one for you. Its not cheap, but the stand would be built to your specifications.
  7. That's fine, as long as you don't care if the stand looks nice. Works for a fish room or maybe a dorm room.
  8. It does. I was thinking the fish doesn't care if its even or odd numbers. I think she may have been new and still learning.
  9. This past weekend, I brought home a 5 white cloud minnows from my LFS for my 10 gallon. I wanted 6 but the girl working at the store said it was better to buy schools of fish in an odd number in case of aggression. That I did not believe to be honest. Of the 5 white clouds, there is an aggressive male. He's harassed the other male (he hides behind the filter) and chases the females. The pygmy corys just stay out of the way. There's three of those. I know I need to add some tall plants to break line of site. Heat is set between 72-74 degrees. What else can I do? A bigger tank is out of the question right now. This is after doing some propagating this evening. Seriously, my Bettas where never this cranky.
  10. I decided to propagate my anubias today. Happy with the results. I need to pick up a few crypts and maybe some vals. It needs something tall in the back.
  11. @nabokovfan87 Thanks! I've been working to get the algae under control and the tank back on a regular maintenance schedule. Mopani is my favorite driftwood. I've tried spider wood and random pieces from the fish store. They never look as interesting in a tank as Mopani does. My favorite plant combo is anubias, crypts, and vals. All three work so well together. I have thought about doing an anubias only tank.
  12. What's been going on in my tank? White Clouds and my second attempt at pygmy corys. One pygmy isn't going to make it. The other one seems fine. At this point, I'm not buying anymore. I love the the White clouds. Such a pretty little fish. One of the males has been displaying near the females. I plan on adding some new plants this week and propagating the anubias. The white clouds are also not very enthusiastic about the LFS branded fish food. They will eat it eventually. I picked up some bug bite spirulina flakes and they love those. Regular bug bites are a hit too. I'll see if I can get better pictures tomorrow.
  13. I love the wild species. If I could run a true blackwater tank, they would be perfect.
  14. The pygmy Cory that was with my beta does eat beta pellets. I made sure some were crushed up and would sink. I need to pick up some new frozen food soon. The pygmy Cory that was with my beta did eat beta pellets. I made sure some were crushed up and would sink. The pygmy Cory that was with my beta did eat beta pellets. I made sure some were crushed up and would sink.
  15. @Guppysnail I'll have to try a few of those for the pygmy corys. They are nibbling at the hikari wafers but don't seem thrilled about them.
  16. I actually have to find someone locally who may want my Betta food. For Bettas, I really like bug bites, Northfin and NLS. I also have a blackworm pellet that went over well. The only food my Betta was not enthusiastic about was the shrimp patties. My pygmy corys seem to be confused by the sinking wafers lol. The white clouds ate the LFS branded flakes. I will get another prepared food for them and replace the frozen brine shrimp with baby brine shrimp.
  17. Louie the Betta died over the weekend. He had a large tumor. Looking at my rather empty tank, I decided to head over to my lfs after work yesterday. I came home with white clouds and more pygmy corys. I have bug bites and several brands of Betta pellets. Since I got back into the hobby, I've kept bettas. I can wax poetic about Betta pellets lol. I ended up coming home with community flakes for the white clouds and sinking wafers. The interesting thing about the flakes is they're the house brand for my LFS. My guess is that the food is made to their specifications? I didn't ask, they were pretty busy. What is everyone's favorite foods for community tanks?
  18. Awww its okay. I tell people it takes at least two hours and caffeine before my brain starts functioning in the morning.
  19. @nabokovfan87 eating was hard. I spent more time getting food on myself lol. I was expecting to find my Betta dead. My guess is sometimes the genetics of Betta splendens can cause problems. In this case it was a tumor. If my water was soft or I had rodi water, I would try keeping a wild betta species.
  20. My Betta died yesterday afternoon. Honestly, I wasn't surprised and had been expecting it for a week or two now. After work, I decided to have some fun and visit my lfs. I looked at chili rasboras and ember tetras first. Then fell I in love with the white cloud mountain minnows. I bought 5 of those and a few pygmy corys. Plus, new food.
  21. It's not too bad using the python one handed. Everything was hard though because I'm left handed. Trying to do things right handed was a challenge.
  22. A tooth brush is a good idea. It looked worse two days ago before I had at it with the gravel vac and turkey baster.
  23. I had a serious fracture in my shoulder that almost needed surgery. Tank maintenance was an occasional water change for almost 6 weeks. Once I came out of the sling 4 weeks back, my shoulder was frozen. Range of motion and strength are improving. The doctor said the fractures are officially healed. My tank is a hot mess. Two days ago, I scrubbed the sides of the glass, vacuumed the substrate, broke down the HOB, and spent 10 mins removing hair algae. I visited the LFS for the first time in months yesterday and picked up a tiny bottle of prime and some Aqua Vitro Purfiltrum. I think it's the same thing as purigen (LFS was out of purigen). My plants are a sad melty looking mess and Louie has a tumor. Hot mess
  24. @GuppysnailThanks! Every guide and YouTube video I've watch about them so far says they are peaceful and happy in a 10 gallon tank. I don't want to put a fish that needs zooming space and is happier in a larger tank, in my 10 gallon. I'm also looking to avoid guppies. Don't want to buy 4 and have 200. 😂
  25. @Chick-In-Of-TheSea I'm not adding more fish until my Betta is gone. At this point though, he's not going to be around much longer. I thought he was dead the other day.
