  1. Our betta had a run in with velvet, we heated his tank up, dosed him up with aquarium salt, and left the light off a few days and he cleared up pretty quick.

It was pretty easy for us to see on him because of his dark color that it was velvet, it looked like he had a dusting of pine pollen on him.

If they're precooked and from a newly opened can,  I would rinse them and feed without heating.  I always give any fresh veggies quick soak in boiling water from the teapot to dispatch any surface bacteria and soften them slightly.  I also always crush the "seed" parts of the bean before putting it in the tank as the membrane on them can be tough for shrimp and snails to get through.

    Thanks NanoNano!

it is likely fine. i dont use prime, but it is my understanding you can still read ammonia with prime, even though it has been rendered safe.

In my experience, Prime doesn't change your readings, which freaked me out the first time using it.   But we had zero casualties from our nitrite spike, so it did seem to de-toxify it as a stop gap.

Did you find out what was wrong with your snail.  Did she make it?  I just had golden do the same thing and then finally die.  I have 2 more that are doing the same thing.

I got a pair when we got ours, and one was always more active than the other and also much larger.  The smaller one did lay on its side sometimes and eventually did die.

The good news is that you are half right! Your snail is a she, but being hemaphroditic Shelly is also part Shelton too 🙂.

Mystery Snails aren't hermaphrodites actually, they have a male and female.  They also don't change sexes.

  6. Welcome!
I'm in a similar situation to you, although we don't have well water we DO have hard city water.  Plants have been a challenge for us too.   Java moss is doing fine, but we haven't had ANY luck with java ferns.   We started with a regular java fern that didn't do well, and also tried a Windelov java moss in the co-op planter with root tabs and its almost completely dead within a couple of weeks.

We have an annubias coffeefolia that is doing really well, and we are going to give Amazon swords a try.

One way to deal with the city or well water issue is to buy cheap gallons of distilled water.    It's still a lot more expensive than tap water, but it might help?  You'd probably need a couple of gallons when you did your water changes.

Had to look that one up. A plant based  zombie movie with several remakes.  I'm in!

You'll enjoy it.  Its still campy enough to be "bad sci-fi" but its actually a decent flick.  The music is great.

The good doctor @Patrick_G  is correct on my confusion.  I recently got some Sulawesi snails and my brain and fingers went to Sulawesi Cardinal shrimp (instead of Caridina shrimp) that I wanted to pair with said snails,  but can't as they require the high PH I rambled about.  Obviously way past time for me to go get something to eat.  Apologies.

Edit- Have Neos in tanks with the Fluval stratum and they are breeding like wild fire.  Comments above about needing to let the ammonia and PH settle still apply.  I've had shrimp literally keel over and die as soon as they touched Fluval substrate that was still "too new".

No problem, thanks for clearing it up!

It’s doable. Maybe a pair or trio. But allow me to forward the thought of working on a larger tank volume. You can find tanks that are quite diverse in size, shape, material, rim / rimless... basically, anything less than a 20 gal. is prone to certain common challenges.

Absolutely, and I've found that many people won't even give many suggestions for such a small tank so I appreciate yours.

We live in a tiny efficiency apartment with very limited space, so I probably could have originally planned for a 10 or even 20 gallon, but it would have had to be my only project and I'm enjoying trying different ideas.

You've been one of the few to offer suggestions to me so far on any outlets, so thank you for that.   I have had a lot of people suggest bettas and snails, but those projects we already have!

For a slow, calm fish, you should look into Least Killifish (Heterandria formosa). Plant it up. They're a temperate tank -- no separate heater necessarily needed.

I love the idea of low heat aquarium since the shrimps are going to be good with that too!   These are cute buggers, hard to find?

Also, are these like the regular killi's that die off yearly?
