  1. Hello, I have 2- 10 gallon tanks and wanted to know if people have had any experience putting Amano Shrimp with Honey Gourami’s??  In the first tank I have Kuhli Loaches and Chili Rasboras with an Amano Shrimp.  The second tank has a Honey Gourami, Celestial Pearl Danios and Panda Corydoras.  In the second tank I’ve tried Amano Shrimp multiple times and they all have died within days whereas in the first tank the Amano Shrimp seems to be doing well and has already successfully molted.  The parameters for both tanks are identical- 0 ammonia and nitrites, 30-40 nitrates, 2 degrees kh and 8-9 degrees gh, 7.2 ph, and both planted.  Could the Honey Gourami or CPD’s be picking at the Amano Shrimp just enough to kill it or is there something else going on??  The Amano Shrimp were small around 1/2” when I got them and were either from my LFS or Aqua Huna.  All the times I’ve tried I end up finding the Amano dead within days with no signs of it being eaten, they’re just all white.

  2. I’ve had no luck with reticulated hillstream loaches because the two that I had at different times were both real aggressive towards the Cory cats in my tank.  But with that said I have read on the forum that some people have had no issues.  Unfortunately I really like those loaches but I would rather keep Cory’s.

Were you under the impression that your tanks would have ammonia, and you’re surprised they don’t? Are the tanks established?

The tanks are pretty well established (2 1/2 years) but I was using the ACO multi strips and had a hint of nitrite, so I wanted to rule out any ammonia.  I wanted to try out the ACO ammonia strips since I just got them and was running low on the API liquid ammonia test.  Also a Cory Cat was missing and I couldn’t find him so that may have caused the nitrite to show up.  The super red pleco that was in the tank was very aggressive and I feel he may have  killed and eaten the Cory…I’ve since taken him out and given him away.

  4. I recently bought the ACO ammonia test strips for the first time and can’t get the color on the pad to change, it stays the original yellow color.  I’ve followed the directions, dipping the pad in and out of the tank water for 30 seconds and even just leaving the pad submerged for the entire 30 seconds.  I’ve tried the test strip on all of my 3 tanks and used up about 10 test strips in all.  I double checked with the API liquid test and it’s showing no ammonia.  I wanted to check with the forum before contacting customer service.

  5. I have 5 in a 10 gallon aquarium and sometimes it’s like the “Globe of Death”, giant steel ball with motorcycles going super fast around and around and you’re on the edge of your seat…but normally they seem healthy and fine whenever I see them.  Make sure to provide lots of hiding spots!!!

  6. Also take what I said at face value because I’m just going by a picture.  If it comes off easily like in my tank then it’s just mulm, but for some reason if it’s attached to the gravel then it’s definitely something else.

  7. It looks like what I get in my tank and I agree with @Schuyler that it could just be mulm.  I either gravel vac it or eventually goes away when the Cory’s stir it up and into the sponge filter.  It hasn’t affected any off my fish and my water parameters are good.

  8. I usually “plop and drop” all my fish without any issues so when I purchased my first Amano shrimp from my LFS i plop and dropped him in but it died within 24 hours.  I learned afterwards that shrimp are more sensitive.  Luckily they only had one in stock so only that one died.

On the videos I’ve watched most of the time the shrimp are in a hanging container off the tank rim and they’re able to get the drip line going…

  9. I will be purchasing Amano shrimp for my 10 gallon aquarium and had a question on acclimation.  All the videos I’ve watched had the schrimp outside the tank but the issue I have is the aquarium is located in the basement that is not insulated or heated and to keep the shrimp in a separate container would create a situation where there would be a 15-20 degree temperature difference.  Could I acclimate using the bag or container and drip the tank water into it while it floats in the tank water??

  10. I was getting back in the hobby after a 20 year hiatus and I went on YouTube and started watching videos about fishkeeping and @Cory made an appearance on K&G Tropicals to talk about aquarium plants and I instantly became interested in keeping live plants in my new aquarium and the rest is history.  ACO has made fishkeeping for me easy and enjoyable to the point where I went from a HOB to a sponge filter and I'm not sure if I would ever go back to a HOB.  Also I could never see myself not having live plants in any of my fish tanks because not only do they add beauty to any tank but of the benefits of keeping them.
