The hole in his shell - is that the norm for these guys? Asking bc there is some activity in the hole. Barnacle? Part of the crab? Hydra?

Also - do aquatic hermit crabs need to change shells like their landlubber counterparts?

There was a little bristle worm living in the shell and eating leftovers. The shell may have had the hole when the crab moved in.

And yes, aquatic crabs fight over empty larger shells when they outgrow their current ones. It is hilarious! They drag the shell with them, look at it over and over, turn it, poke the inside, then finally line it up and do the switch. However, I have seen some reject the new dwellings and move back to their old one, which is probably why they hold on to the older shell for a bit.

I thought about your tank the whole time I was watching Jonathan Butkus at the GSAS meeting on aquascaping with macroes. Enjoyable to catch up on all the doings in this tank. Hope you and yours are well. Keep having fun!

Unfortunately, I missed that talk! Being on an island I depend on a reliable ferry system, and they have been canceling and delaying sailings a lot recently.

I am happy there is encouragement to grow macros. Once they take off, they are amazing! Mine are turning into a red forest!

  2. I truly feel so fortunate with my saltwater tank. I am down to cleaning the filter once every two or three weeks, feed every other day but if I go away for a month I just throw a bunch of clams and mussels in, and only water top offs (and not many at that). I think cold water makes all the difference!

Have you thought about recreating a rain forest environment in the big tank? Frogs and other fun critters can live in a lush plant environment!

In any case, I hope you enjoy whichever direction it goes. Pushing a project that is not in your heart would probable lead to failure.

    You are still cool!

Gotta give credit to the crabs though! Chiton are not exactly easy prey

Don't mess with me, I have arms from eating lots of spinach!

The joy obtained from the box is the point. Glad to hear it’s thriving. Give Ursula a hug and kiss for me 🤣

As much as I love him, will never attempt a kiss unless I feel suicidal! 😆

Greta, on the other hand, has started to play with my hand when I feed. As hairy scary as she looks, she is an absolute sweetheart!

  5. It has been a while! Life takes over, and the fish keep swimming...

In July this tank will be 2 years old. Twenty eight aggregate anemones, Ursula (of course), Lolita, Greta, Twinkle Toes, way too many crabs, bay gobies and shrimp. Mr. Chiton was eaten by one of the big crabs. Pods, pods, many pods. I stopped the rock weed since the red macros are quite happy, as well as keep the water quality nice. The tank is still brings me happiness!

I clean the filter once a month, meaning change socks and scrub the airstone from the skimmer, as well as top off water as needed. No water changes. Other than that, it is a very easy tank to maintain. I have left the coraline algae and diatoms as food, so it may not win a beauty contest, but the critters seem happy and that is what matters to me. 😊

This is a really cool tank you have going. Makes me want to take my kids to the beach

Thank you! Yes, I would encourage trips to the beach. It is an awesome place to explore year-round. 😍

Do you think the eel grass needs the added CO2 from low tides?

I don't know. @Biotope Biologist may be a better person to ask.

  7. The drama box has a few itty bitty updates:

    - Mr. Iso went for a very ungraceful swim (more like falling without style) and landed on a anemone. Mr. Iso no more.

    - 29 anemones, not including the flamenco family, aiptasias and Ursula.

    - Lola has an offspring: so there is now a Lolita in the tank (my homage to VN). She is camera shy...

    - The derpy brigade continues to entertain, as they signal to be ready for breakfast:

    - Twinkle Toes came out of the hiding place in the macros to graze on pods:

    - Red macro keeps growing on the temp probe:

Oh do you have a picture of that?!

I grew up near an estuary that feeds into the sound. I used to go down there to turn over rocks and look at all the critters. These things were always fascinating.

Do you have any of those long green wormy things with the spiky legs?

Have you considered adding eel grass? That could look cool on the left side of the tank as a background plant

This was taken a little while ago:

I have attempted eel grass, but it gets eaten. I do not know what you mean by wormy things with spiky legs. Bristle worms? If so, yes, there are a few in there.

They move fairly fast actually. But suctioning to rocks is their best defense, you might see them move at night.

I love it when he is suctioned to the glass and I can see under the skirt! Fascinating little bits… 😍

    Can you explain?

I bleed the skimmer to add a bit more air into the tank. The micro bubbles mimic the ones from the ocean tide crashing into the rocks. The tank has looked happier since I did that, but I do not want the pH to get higher than 8.5 so I scaled it back a bit.

How much does go move? I've only ever seen them at low tide under rocks. Do they move at a snail speed?

He is mainly nocturnal, so I see him in a different spot every morning. He does cruise the tank cleaning up, so I know he is quite active. I imagine he is a bit slower than snails, but about the same speed as a limpet.

These are the macros that I suspect might be Turkish Towel:

Excuse the yellow. The bright morning sun was making everything in the tank glow.

  11. I am scaling back on the oxygen a bit since my pH went to 8.5

Still trying to determine how the lack of CO2 may affect some critters, but the tank seems as happy as ever. Lots of copepods, so I am now feeding once every four days, causing the gobies to follow me with imploring eyes. 🤨

Are those macros growing on the powerhead too?!  A tank full of life!

They are indeed! It looks like the beginning of Turkish Towel, but it is still a bit small for me to be sure. I will get more pics later when lights come on. 😀

I don't believe you for a second, you young whipper-snapper!  I know you got the Insta-Toks.  (How old do I have to be to talk like that?!  I already love that I am called an "elder" millennial - who prefers to think of themselves as Gen-X, thank you very much!).🤣💀😂💀

My kids have already deemed you (and me) obsolete! 😉

  14. Geppetto poses similar challenges like my pea puffers regarding interior design. I have some of my plants growing in little clay egg pots so I can easily move them around every now and then. Then after a day they come to the front of the tank and give this triumphant look: “I am done! Can we do that again?” 🐡

    He is beautiful!😍

I’m a 51 year old beginner alpine skier and it’s not working out too well 🤣. I keep getting hurt and the lessons alongside 12 year old are a little embarrassing! I think I’m going to stick to Nordic!
I do freeride mountain biking and have no trouble flying through the air on a bike but hurling down a mountain on skis is another thing altogether! Maybe I should try snowboarding?

I prefer snowboarding. The risk of being impaled by those two extra sticks is greatly reduced, and your body stays in one piece if you fall. 🤪

    Love the weather, @TheSwissAquarist!

  16. I have Mopani wood in two of my tanks and can’t grow BBA (believe me, I’ve tried). The critters love to graze on it and it provides a good source of biofilm. The one thing I will mention is the water temperature in my tanks is on the cool side, 74F

    I hope this helps.
