  1. I have been battling staghorn in my 29g for months and now it's in my newly set up 75g. I have a theory that it may be my tap water from my sink that I use to fill both tanks. I have used excel to kill the staghorn before but now it isn't working as well to kill it may have to pull plants out and spray with hydrogen peroxide this time. I'm also on the hunt for amano shrimp and some Florida flagfish to help keep it under control. What other steps should I take to help combat staghorn. Also my other 2 tanks both 10g don't have staghorn but I fill them with water that's on a water softener should I try using that water in the tanks that have staghorn? And lastly like the title says can tap water have enough iron in it to grow staghorn I only use ez green and foot tabs to fertilize.

My Co-Op order came in yesterday and the Water Wisteria seems really ragged. Lots of loose leaves and broken stem pieces in the bag. I put what was left of it in my pea puffer tank in its pot in the easy planter. For those who've kept this plant, do you think it'll survive? Any suggestions on getting it to thrive? It's in a 10 gallon with a Stingray II light and Easy Green.

I would say if the roots are ok you should be fine wisteria is very fast growing and very easy. With the stingray and ez green you should be fine I would say give it a week or so and if you haven't seen new growth by then you may want to reach out to the co-op.

Ok, I'll try that tonight. Do you guys know any foods that the cories would really like? I've tried hikari sinking wafers, shrimp pellets, brine shrimp, and flakes (which they will eat if I push them down to the bottom). Would frozen bloodworms be good? I've tried feeding it once and they didn't really notice it, but they were also new to the tank and probably stressed.

Mine love frozen bloodworms also if you have vibra bites mine eat them like there's no tomorrow

At first, I too found some fish to be picky. Let them go a day and a half with _absolutely no food_. Then try the Xtreme.

I agree my honey gouramis would spit out the krill flakes at first now they gobble them down

Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately, I need one that’s about 28.5” long.

Dang was really hoping that would help. I would suggest what the other person said with green house siding or what I've done too is get a piece of glass from a home improvement store along with super glue and a cabinet handle and I superglued the handle onto the glass and worked pretty decent for me you can then order aquarium top backstriping for pretty cheap and cutting glass is easy with a square. Good luck

  6. I've heard Cory say in Livestreams that he's used mineral oil in bubble counters to stop evaporation does anyone have experience with this. I've googled this topic and found a couple of results and seems like there are issues with it clogging check valves and people seem to run multiple check valves. Does this actually work not that I doubt Cory I'm just a bit worried on trying with my own tank.

    Be aware…

Vallisnera SOMETIMES works, not due to the fact that the Africans will leave it alone (like the anubias and Java fern, for example), but because it grows back so quickly.

If you notice, the Val in the video is pretty torn up.

I'm willing to try it jungle val is pretty cheap I got mine less than 2 weeks ago and it's already grown 5x bigger

There is a guy on Youtube who keeps yellow labs in a tank with vallisneria. The video entitled "Yellow Lab Cichlid Care Guide, The Best Beginner African Cichlid" and is 5:54 long. It has some video of the tank with vallisneria. Even that guy points out that yellow labs and plants won't work out for everyone.

    Will definetly check it out

Just wanted to make sure ☺️ but yes those are fine parameters. I do enjoy the planted african cichlid tank over the bland moon like rock landscape. Even if the latter is more accurate to the actual biotope.

I believe pictures will be in order!

Yes I like the planted version as well and yes I'll have pictures but not sure how soon I can get them all my local fish stores don't usually have those cichlids either they sell fast or they don't carry them may have to see if they can order me some. Thanks!

With the exception of the anubias and Java fern, those plants won’t stand a chance with African’s.i don't care about the crypts going in but I already have the jungle val can I put rocks at the base of the plant will that protect them?

Both yellow labs and demasoni are african lake cichlids. Do you have a high enough pH, gH, and kH to support them?

If so disregard, here are my favorite tame african lake cichlids. Tropheops chilumba, Pseudotropheus perspicax, Labidochromis perlmutt. For a little change in pace synodontis catfish hold their own quite well

I believe so my tap is 8.0 pH 300+ ppm GH and usually 10-12° KH if I'm remembering correctly. I believe this is suitable?

    Hi all,

Been testing my water before getting live plants and fish..  Kind of concerned about having high KH of 18,  my PH is 7.6 and GH is 4.

I wanting to keep cold water fish and  some live plants.  Will the plants survive that high of KH, like  java fern and  petite anubis.

That's around what my tanks are at and the only plant I have that struggles is scarlet temple otherwise my anubias, wisteria, Val's, java ferns, crypts, and swords do just fine i wouldn't worry too much only one way to find out. Good luck

    • Thanks 1
  13. I have a 75g planted with jungle val anubias and java ferns and will be getting some crypts. My tank is filled with driftwood and I was thinking of stocking yellow labs and demasoni cichlids is there any other fish that go well with them and how many should I stock?

Not sure if this applies to aquatic snails but same physiology so I would assume it does

That could be it I have the idea of getting a small 5g tank for just my snails and maybe some shrimp I don't see ending adding baking soda because I am worried about my pH buffer for my fish thanks for the info!

I haven't experienced fungus on my snails, but I did nurse a mystery snail back to health after an apparent poisoning incident (came that way from my local petsmart). When mystery snails (not sure about nerites but it could be similar) experience copper poisoning or a high toxin in their environment, their foot will curl and wrinkle and produce a cottony white discharge with black specks. It looks like cotton fungus, but it is in fact a discharge that is a sign of irritation. Clearing the water of whatever is poisoning them (copper, ammonia, nitrites, some other heavy metal) and time helps them to heal.

I gave my ill snail a space of its own to heal up, along with very clean water, and in a week it opened up into a very active and normal mystery snail with no sign of irritation.

If that's what your nerites are experiencing, it's pretty simple to clear up. I'd just use normal tap water, don't mess with hardness and kh because it looks like it's fine for your snails. Have you checked for copper?

EDIT to add: I don't know if there's anything wrong with this nerite snail in particular, though. The sides of their bodies often look like that, and the foot looks like it's nice and flat and functioning.

I haven't checked for copper the only thing I dose that would have copper is seachem excel and I believe it's invertebrate safe but I added better filter media last night so hopefully that will clear the water up better. There's only one at the top this morning so that's an improvement.

Edit I do add baking soda to raise my KH not sure if it's one of the plants that causes it or what but my KH is usually less than 40ppm sometimes almost 0 PPM so I add baking soda to raise it only tank that does it out of my 4 tanks could that be a culprit?

  16. 2 of my 3 nerites have been at the top of the tank for the last 2 days I moved them to clean the tank and when one was going back up to the top I noticed some white growths on its side. I've been battling with this tank to give the snails the correct water conditions because one of the snails has bad shell erosion I've tried putting eggshells in but not sure if it's working I've dosed equilibrium in the past and have wonder shells as well but my water is pretty hard so I don't use those often. My GH is usually around 200-300ppm KH between 40-120ppm oh is 7.8 0 ammonia 0 nitrite and 40ppm nitrate everyone else in the tank is super happy my platys can't stop having babies and even my aenues corydoras are mating now so I'm quite frustrated at the trouble I'm having with these snails.

My honeys in quarantine looooove baby brine shrimp. I have a batch hatching right now for them. I have noticed my youngest gourami also chews and spits a lot before successfully eating her food, so it might be a maturity thing if they are quite young. In the past week she seems to be eating much better even with pellets.

Yeah they seem to spit over and over but tonight they did eat a bit better I am going to order stuff to hatch brine shrimp soon
