  1. To summarize quickly for you. I started with tannins. Used purigen to remove. Then a white haze that was described to me as a bacterial bloom. I did 30% water changes every other day last week to try and clear that up. Thinking maybe I had bunch of phosphates in my tank  water column allowing the bacteria to bloom instead of finding a home somewhere else.  Someone also mentioned bio film on the glass so I scrubbed the glass with a brush.

It seems to get better immediately after the water change but then a coke days later it looks like this. (See picture below).

I ran the full gambit of test this morning

    Ammonia and nitrite 0

Nitrate hard to read but definitely in the orange

    Ph 7.2

The sponge material that I put in for mechanical was an aquaclear 70 sponge cut to fit. And then some fine filter recommend by lfs again cut to fit. I also have aqua clear 30 bio media in there.

On a side note. When I have been changing the water I rinsed the media on the first day. I haven't vacuumed the gravel as I have baby mystery snails scattered around the bottom and in the gravel so I don't want to suck them up.

  2. After all the advice I have received from everybody in this site about my water clarity issue i think I have determined that my filter Just can't handle my tank.

I bought a complete top fun kit that had everything i needed. Is it possibly that my filter can't keep up.

I modified it to make it the best I could. I put a coarse sponge, fine filter material, bio rings,  and then more fine material on top to polish that I remove every couple days. Nothing seems to be working. I also tucked a piece of fine filter around the intake tube in the back.

I'm wondering should I replace the filter with an aquaclear, and go one size up to  a 50. Or should I do something different with my current filter.

    TIA

  3. I have been looking on line for an easy to make snello recipe. I found one that said to use tums and another that said to use calcium tablets. I was wondering if I could substitute a cuttlebone for the calcium instead. I have it and now as well use it up. The snails didn't seem to want to eat it when I just put it in the tank

  4. Thank you for that. Am i correct in thinking that she is holding. I had one of the mollies give birth some time ago and only one fry survived. I wanted to try and be proactive and see if I can have a better survival rate.

  5. Fist off sorry for no pictures, I will try andbiggw out in the other tank.

    Questions:

    1. how can tell if she is holding. Compared to the other female in the tank she looks a bit more swollen

    2. How can I tell when she will drop the fry. I see two orifices' one I assume is the anus and the other is where the fry will come out.(just started in the fish keeping hoppy and definitely not a breeder so sorry if my terms are wrong) the one is definitely bigger and is a different color like a greyish white.

I will try and get some pictures with my phone and add to this thread in a little bit.

Any help will be greatly appreciated

  6. If you have a seeded sponge with bb in it and no source of ammonia you would not see any. Only if you overload the already existing bacteria in the sponge and it can't keep up you will see an ammonia spike.

The one thing you need to be careful of is actually killing the already established bacteria on the sponge by not giving it an ammonia source to feed off. Fritz zyme7 loss like bacteria in a bottle so they is just more bacteria that don't herbs a food source.

What was the stock of the tank that that sponge was taken out of?

If I was you I would put a couple hardier fish in the tank to keep feeding the bacteria that are already there and Monitor close. It would be a shame to lose all that bacteria that you already  have.
