@Lifeisgood they loved the gouramis! They asked me on the sly if I was selling them anywhere else and I think they were happy when I said no. I’m following Cory’s advice and “marrying” myself to one store. Not that there’s another store near me anyway. 😅

I’m not sure what fish I’m going to put in the ponds yet. I know I want to breed orange cherry shrimp, and I’m thinking either white clouds or platys fish-wise. I’ll probably go with platys because I want to start breeding them indoors anyway, so I’ll have somewhere to keep a few when the summer’s over.

(And yes Tolkien is great! A literary treasure. 😊)

Absolutely on all counts!  It will be fun to keep track of what you are doing.  I have too many house remodeling plans to do much in the way of outdoor ponds this year.  But I will enjoy yours and others vicariously.😁

  2. If you go to the Introductions and Greetings section there are some basic instructions as to how to use the forum and understand how certain options work.  If you “click” on a person’s name or icon, you will go to their personal profile.  But if you click on the question or topic they post, it brings you to the thread.😊

A variety is always best! Sounds like your giving them a pretty good diet, but mixing new treats in is always good, I really like making steamed egg with different ingredients inside it... I guess its my home made version of rapashy type food haha.

You mean like a poached egg?  Or do you beat the egg and then steam it?

  4. It’s probably a lot easier to stock a pond than to keep these northern fish temperate tanks cool enough.  For me, having Axolotls at their healthy temperatures has its challenges unless you can easily foot the bill for a cooler.  Or if you have a cooler basement room.  Or unless you can do a lot of cold water changes during the hotter month.  What say you?

@Lifeisgood If I understand you right, it's the same way you start a suction when also using the wide part of the siphon. Right?

Yup.  Just make sure there is water in your hose that will pull more water out of your tank when you are ready to start syphoning.

    and @GardenStateGoldfish

How do you get the suction started when not using the wide part on the end?

Get part of the tube filled with tank water by submerging 1/4 of the tube in the tank, tip it up so the water fills the mid to bottom section of your tube but pinch it off to keep it in the tube.  Then put the top end in the tank and keep the end submerged in the water.  Then release the bottom end so the water that was in the tube will flow out into your bucket.  As that water goes into the bucket the syphon effect will begin to suck more water from your tank.😊

So, the journey started February 25 when I got "all inclusive" 6 months old aquarium.

The girl who sold me the aquarium, lives 30 minutes away by car, and considering the cold and shaky taxi ride and 90% water change my betta was pretty stressed 🤕 to say the least. I still don't know much about normal behavior of bettas but the way he moved I wouldn't say he's happy and moreover, he barely ate anything.

Before I could engage in stabilizing the environment for him, my landlord added up $50 on top of my rent 🤯 just because I have 6 watt light running during daytime. I could fight with them about this nonsense but I'm an introvert, I have chronic migraine and I avoid conflicts by all means, so I found another room to rent to keep living expenses the same and moved out 3 days later. Good for me, bad for my poor stressed fish.

Another cold long shaky taxi ride and water change on March 1. And I didn't have dechlorinator 🤭 The girl gave me few drops of water conditioner with the tank but I didn't expect to need a bottle so soon... On top of everything else, I work 9-5 and don't drive. There was Big Al's shop near my previous place but now the closest one is 2 hours away using 3 buses and closed for in-person shopping (so no way to ask questions, see the products, compare sizes and all those benefits of aquarium store).

A week flew by in no time with all the troubles of moving and unpacking, and my red friend didn't feel any better. Actually he got worse. First instinct was to go to one of facebook groups of Canadian betta keepers 🤐 Bad idea. As soon as you ask a question, trying to put as many details in it, you become a fish abuser criminal convicted for cruelty to animals and all group members turn into hawks and spam a ton of frustration in comments.

Logically, I went to youtube for education without feedback to keep sane. That was the time I discovered Cory and felt incredibly safe on his channel. Hopefully the care community on this forum is my last place to go for all things fish.

March 7 was when I diagnosed fin rot 😥

Whew!  What a ride you and your betta have had.  I love red bettas!  I hope you find James B’s thread about Hugo his betta with fin rot.  Hugo is recovering now.😊  What have you been doing for your betta since discovering the fin rot?

I see that logistics are hard with no car and all.  Hopefully we can walk with you through this and he will soon be recovering too!

By the way I am Canadian born, and still have many relatives in Canada—so my heart has a special place for youz guys!❤️😊

  8. You have all said so much that comes to my mind too.  I think I also would tell myself to join this forum.  Since local fish clubs are not meeting yet by me, this forum has been such a wealth of knowledge and encouragement for me.  As well as a place where we can laugh with other fish Nerms.  Thanks everyone for at least doubling or tripling the enjoyment in the hobby!😊

In my experience, bettas leave nerite and mystery snails alone. They don't harm their antennae at all. What kind of algae eater do you mean?

My first betta that was young when introduced to a tank with Mystery snails.  He did fine with them. But then the adult Mystery snails died but then some of their children grew up in the same tank and the betta decided he would eat their antenna.☹️

Yep I feed mostly Repashy. But I too have some boisterous eaters I call my sharks in longfin zebra, leopard danios and Orange van rio tetras. I have nerites so no snail problems. I saw online they’ll do blanched kale, spinach etc. Maybe zucchini? I need something in there that will last long enough for them to get to it. My Kuhli loaches generally take care of anything left over at night.

Cucumber or zucchini on a fork work well.  The fork makes it sink so no need for blanching.  I tied fishing line to the handle of a fork, so I don’t have to get my arm wet when I want to retrieve it.  Cory showed a fish wholesaler who used sweet potato, I think it was. But I haven’t tried that yet.  I just don’t want veggies which disintegrate too quickly so they would affect my water quality.

    Today was moving day!

Hugo is down stairs in the basement where my brother will be QTing for the next two weeks, so I thought I would move him  upstairs. Because theres no way I'm gonna have two weeks without seeing hugo.

Because of Hugos fins, I wasnt going to catch him with a net. So instead I got a cup, and picked him up with it. This will be way better for him fins. It was really easy catching him, all I did was act like my finger was food, and then caught him:

    image.png.9b008c25c8ef91f37cc9c02e418494c2.png

I then drained the tank and put the filter media into the bucket

I then brought the tank upstairs, and boy was that tank heavier then what I thought it was going to be. I forgot about the weight of the substrate.

    But...

When moving the tank upstaird and the water going splish, splosh the plants got uprooted. And I found a Baby Hygrophillia! How awesome is that!

I then filled it back up, and planted the plants again.

I'm also considering moving the neon tetras in my community tank to Hugos Tank, temporarily. The angels in the community tank have been taking a snack on them every so often. I started with 10, now I have 4. I'll take the cardinals down to the LFS sometimes soon, but in the meantime Hugo might make some freinds.

I'm mostly excited about the hygrophillia runner! I haven't much luck with plants in the past, so to see this finally happend is AWESOME!

Hugo was in my office space, so I would hangout with him when I was on the forum, etc. He's now in my bedroom, so we'll see how much attention he gets.

I am so glad that he is doing so well! ❤️

Are Hillstream’s active at night? Trying to make sure these guys eat enough. Also Will they feed on vegetables?

They do eat vegetables, Repashy and sinking pellets and wafers.  I am feeding mine extra at night because the barbs that mine are with are such voracious eaters—so I worried about them getting enough food.  And the suggestions that I got were to feed them when the lights go out.  I know they go about in the day too, but a lot of bottom feeders eat day and night.  Keeping anubias plants with them is really good for them too, because they apparently grow a good amount of biofilm for them to eat.  Mine hang out in these plants all the time.

I just wish I could see in the dark myself so I would know for sure that the Hillstream loaches are eating and that all the food I put in there at night isn’t just going to blossom my snail population!😬

I had a few similar snails surprise me lately too.  It looks like from this article (down at the VERY bottom of the info) that red-rimmed melania are a type of MTS.

Thank you KaitieG!  Now we all learned a new thing!  I was just surprised because I watch this tank all the time and how did it get so big without me seeing it?  Oh well, maybe it burrows under the sand a lot.

Another thing I just thought of is the aspen Beding there is no huge problem but I don’t like it just because it molds easily and is really dusty

    What do you use?

  15. 3 hours ago, Kirsten said:

Sure! Not much to look at yet, especially since the bio load and nutrients are so low, it'll take awhile for the algae to grow. Right now I think it kind of looks like the surface of the moon, so I call the shrimp my mooninites 😄

Little 1.5 gallon tank from some big box store.

Thanks for posting, I have never seen this kind of setup before.  It is very nice!

Nice! I'm watching my opae ula right now, up here in an attic office that I didn't want to have to lug buckets up for water changes. About 6 weeks in and they're doing great with some brackish-specific macro algae, crushed coral and some rocks. No filter, no airstone, just distilled water and the initial bit of marine salt. They're super tiny, but active! I love watching them swim upside down on the water surface.

I'm only feeding them once a month, 1 betta pellet on the full moon 🙂 Best of luck on your shrimp adventure!

Could you post a picture of your tank?
