  1. What Is your PH? Bosmani are hard water fish. I suggest a 40% water change. My 100gl. tank is nearly all rainbows and don't have any issues. My parameters are PH 8, Ammonia and Nitrite 0 Nitrate 25-50 KH 10-12 GH 18. No CO2 and very good surface agitation.

  2. I have just started to get rid of Black Algae in my tank, it got to a point that nearly all plants were covered as well as wood. Did not use any chemical but changed ~40% of water every week and after 3 water changes inserted a bag of Phosphate remover into the filter, a week after I started with the Phosphate remover the algae started to disappear.

  3. Hello everyone.

Today I have noticed that some of my fish have White spots on them. Yesterday I have changed water and inserted a bag of Phosphate removing resin as my level was 2ppm (tested today and it is down to 1ppm).

My question:  Do I need to remove the bag before starting with medication?

    Thank you

    Ben

@Mr Gumby; When I changed my tanks from tap water to RO/DI water, I changed 25% of the water so that now after many years, all of my tanks are 100% RO/DI and my fish and I couldn't be happier. Of course I added peat moss to my filter to make my water a little more acidic for my blackwater fish (That's all I have), and they still love it.

    Please explain with more details.

I want to have a 300ltr. black water tank but my problem is that my tap water are PH 8, 40ppm nitrate and KH 20.

Do you add salts/minerals to the water? What substrate do you use? Do you keep plants? Which?

    Thank you

  5. Thank you Colu.

This was also my conclusion. The fish died overnight and I have looked at it with a X10 glass. The gills were one lump and didn't have any blood in them. I talked with the LFS and was told that rainbows do suffer of tumors.

  6. The saga takes a twist.

After time in isolation, observation and medication it seems that the fish got better so today I re-introduced it to the display tank. Once this was done I have started to clean the quarantine tank and syphoned the water when something caught my eye, just a small movement, there was a fish fry, probably about 1.0 - 1.5mm (1/16") long.

    So...

Fish goes mad, I put it into isolation, fish recover and find fry.

    Does it make sense?🤔

  7. This evening while feeding the fish I have noticed that one of my Melanotaenia Nigrans suffers as of something that looks as the gills on one side are out and the fish breath faster than the rest. What do you think? Can I do something about it?

    Sorry for the poor photos.

    Thanks.

  8. Can't tell what it is but it is not a White Cloud Minnow as I have some of them. My first thought was a type of Carp. It is the wrong mouth for Reticulated flying fox, so no, can't be that one.

It could be  a parasitic infection but am not 100% sure that what's going on have you added anything  to the tank resently and is it only this fish showing odd behaviour

Two weeks ago I have added 11 Silver Tip Tetra (Hasemania nana) and two Spotted Butterfly Loach. This fish is the only fish with this behavior pattern.

I keep pseudomugil signifers, they're pretty similar. Can you take and post a video of the behavior? That might help. I'm having a hard time picturing what the rainbowfish is doing. I hope the fish hangs on!

Will try to catch it, however, imagine an aircraft doing aerobatics in a very tight airspace (also, read the end of this post) 🙂.

Video would be best but is the fish rubbing on things / showing its belly ? That can mean ick.

    No rubbing.

Anyway, as I mentioned yesterday, I have separated the fish and positioned it into a tank with fresh water and acclimatized it for about an hour inside a plastic bag. The fish was breathing very fast, performed its erratic movements and seemed to be left with no energy. I have added antibiotics (eSHA 2000) and anti Fluke medicine (eSHA gdex), this evening, the fish seems a bit better, breathing is normal and this erratic movements seems to be controlled. I have given a bit of frozen food (Coppipods). an hour after feeding second dose of medication went in, so all in all, there was a slight improvement and I hope that it will survive.

Thank you all for taking the time to reply.

  10. Hello all.

A Forktail Blue-eye Rainbow / Pseudomugil furcatus female has started to swim in a very strange way. If you imagine  a box 1.5"X1.5"X1.5" then the fish swims inside it erratically in sharp and fast turns for 2-3 seconds, then all go back to normal and after few minutes does the same thing again. I have tested ammonia and nitrite both are '0'.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks

With bloating and the Popeye most likely an internal bacterial infection  but I can't be a 100% sure I would air on the side of caution and treat with Sera baktopur direct tables

    Thanks Colu.

I have suspected that it is internal infection but didn't know which med to use. Will buy the med. and keep in case something like this will happen again.

    Thanks again

    Ben

  12. The fish was quarantine but died this evening.

I attach 3 photos, two show the fish on its own and the other as a comparison to an healthy fish. Am still interested to hear opinions regarding what could have gone wrong.

    Thank you.
