  1. So my first successful spawning attempt was right around 200 fry (counted) and after culls and death, its around 150 (haven't counted). Both were normal sized bettas, maybe the female was slightly smaller. So today i currently have a king pair and there doing amazing. If i just compare eggs clutches in the nest, there's way over 150 maybe 200 and every 2-3 min there dropping another 12-25 eggs like clockwork (I've been watching for about 30 min now. They have to have 350-450 eggs by now. So crazy!
  2. I would much rather have females then males. We want to specialize in sororities more than singular Bettas. But for science! My temps were right around 80-82. I have another spawn and I'm going to try and keep all factors the same. Hopefully it doesn't take too many batches to isolate the cause.
  3. So, first the observation. 180 fry in my first batch made it to 2.5 months. 1 let me repeat this, ONE turned out to be male. To research I go. Turns out, they still don't exactly know what causes a fishes sex. Even going down to the DNA level. At least this was what I understood from the papers. I might try and figure this out as I would rather not have to cup 1300 Bettas. Im going to switch one aspect of ever breeding to see if I can isolate and repeat the process. If I can, then I'll have it tested and see if we can't figure it out. I've never heard of such a ratio before. 1 male to every 180 females is insane and exactly what I could have wished for.
  4. This is my Cadillac Betta. Not perfect coloring but still great looking and his size is crazy. I doubt it's a giant but it's the biggest king I have. He's about as long as my knuckles without the thumb and I'm 6,1. @nabokovfan87thanks. I think that's what my friend does on her 4k phone. It over heats though.
  5. This is a different male. Absolutely massive. Another male. The velvet reds this one has is spectacular. But the best red I have is iin the first couple I showed. I haven't seen a red like those in a bloody Mary shrimp.
  6. Sweet, just tried some of those suggestions (no more lights for additional lighting, no special camera or settings) and I got some decent photos forsure. This male is what I would say show quality and I found a female from a different breeder and paired them. I'm curious to see how similar their fry will become. This is the female to that show koi in the first pics. All of these are kings besides a couple females.
  7. I have 2 or 3 awesome red male kois. Wish I had a similar female but I do have some nice females I think will be a net gain for the fry colors. I'll keep everyone updated. 2.5 months away from color.
  8. Ahh, I didn't know they don't move. And are you talking about the planaria looking things or the really long thin ones?
  9. Could be egg bound. Risky procedure to save it for egg bound but if all else fails, maybe give it a try. A 5 day fast should have cut it down if it was food related (or it should have bloated more with gases from blocked food, is my guess".
  10. Hi everyone. I'm interested in selling some of my bettas online but for that, I need some great pictures. It only makes sense if I can picture more than 7 an hour. If no postproduction is needed, I can get away with 5. My biggest problem is glare and getting that crystal clear image. Any help would be appreciated.
  11. Finally got some more into established breeding tanks. Here are some pic of the current "to be" fathers of my next batches. They're all kings so there some of the biggest I've seen in any store. This next batch might come out a little smaller but that's cause I'm adding more of the colors I'm looking for and i only have smaller ones of those. Id says about 2 or 3 gens later ill have some nice, show quality colors. P.S. I still suck at betta pictures. If I had an idea to easily get good pics, I'd probably start to sell online. suggestion would help.
  12. These are my first batch. Lots of kois it looks like
  13. Yeah, still not the best pics. That's definitely my lowest stat. I need to upgrade. They just went through a vigorous 2 week methylene treatment so they lost quite a bit of color. But now the new system should be pretty clean. Hopefully they bounce back in a couple weeks or less.
  14. I will when I get them in. It's hard to take pics in the current set up. My 1 batch came out about 40-50 percent koi so I'm excited to see them color out. Must have strong koi genetics 😉
  15. So, our old Betta wall was really nice (maybe the best I've seen), but it was taking about 1 hour everyday to siphon them clean. So I learned auto water changes aren't everything. This new wall siphons all the debris that falls to the bottom like Betta boo boo. Now we just need to swap and siphon one bin a day which should take about 5-10 min. Water quality is a huge concern when raising giant koi Bettas for their color and size. Let me know what you think. Maybe 1 more day for the whole 40 to be replaced.
  16. @JoeQI use those for feeding but this is my breeding tank so i want lots of micros and algae for them to choose from when there born. i usually like to let the fry grow for about 2 weeks without any processed foods. It might not be true, but I currently use it as a pre cull. If they can't hunt and forage, then their probably weak already. Good news is about half the rocks have algae now. should be ready in about a week or 2. I want it almost solid green.
  17. That's funny. Yeah, my loaches seem to be like cows in a field with hair algae. But at the time, it was the only algae in the tank.
  18. @JoeQIm looking for hair, diatoms etc. Anything for hillstream loaches.
  19. When I first started, algae was easy to get. Now, lol...... So, I have a ten-gallon, full light (the light has grown algae in tanks before) ive added leaf zone, 1.5 weeks later and no algae. I have my light on for about 14 hrs.
  20. @modified lungIf hydrogen is looking for ions, wouldn't it readily attach to o2 making it neutral or water? so as long as your pumping air (mind you the temp micros of whats going on) into the water, the hydrogen would bond up? Also, would chlorine then try to stabilize at hydrogen chloride and or chlorine oxide? My chemistry is less than ideal.
  21. So, I need both, one to test and one to monitor as redundance. I love the replaceable probe models and actually never heard or seen a storage solution. Thats pretty cool. As far as co2 regulation, I will use a co2 tester for actual dissolved co2 which its kind of my ph down. My bio activity raises ph like crazy and constant co2 helps keep it in check. My balancing act is figuring out how much co2 I can actually use to regulate the ph.
  22. @Streetwise Good stuff. Did I mention my huge co2 die off 😅. Accidently messed with the co2 knobs when the system was off. I thought i just cracked it again (2-5 bubs per sec) but when I remembered halfway into the next day almost all the fish were dead and my co2 was raging. 400$ Lesson learned. Yea Apex might be my go too. I want it to control my water changes and just keep an eye on my levels as I'm already busy with just life. @tolstoy21Hanna is my next go to I believe. Some people have said it's the bomb, so I probably am going to try it out. I just bought a 25$ one on amazon (pretty sure it's a 12$ meter) and this things about as stable as my bank account.
  23. @tolstoy21 What's considered not cheap? If you already calibrate time to time (I really don't like calibrating anything) then the bluelabs are great. Bought mine about 7-10 years ago and just now becoming unusable. I think I paid 80 something. If i was you and wanted to buy it, I would buy it from them directly. I run another business and its knowledge through the industry that big box stores have contracts to get the product cheaper from manufacturing, example: dewalt drills for home depo. These all carry a unique bar code that's different from all other suppliers. When 2 of the same tools were bought (one from homedepo, one from dewalt) they found that a few things including the choke ring (i believe) was plastic from homedepo and metal from direct. The tool was more expensive from dewalt as well which justifies the change. I don't believe all manufactures do this, but I wouldn't be surprised if this is across industries with high end brands.
