Yes, and yeah ik. I just have NO clue why this is happening, I have a idea of what it could be possibly.
1. Rotting plants2. The dead fish a while back
3. Overfeeding (I actually now looking back a couple months ago was doing this.)
4. Changing cartridge and killing some of the bacteria. (Most likely not the case.)
And yeah. Corys vid is super helpful btw. I will do a daily 50% change + no feeding for a week and test.
4. is actually the most likely. All the other would have only caused a very temporary spike.

@Tony s, @johnnyxxl, @macdaddy36, I feel so discouraged 😔. The ammonia in tap is 0. After letting it sit overnight as mentioned, It hasn’t budged and is very close to 1 ppm ammonia, after I checked it just like a minute ago, how is this happening? Please can someone help me and throw out ideas? I feel super discouraged as it has been forever….
Interesting, I just read this,
High Ammonia is caused by: Inadequate biological filtration (damaged or immature 'New Tank Syndrome) Over stocking. Over feeding
Could my cartridge be like that since I changed it? I added bacteria (dr Tim’s one and only) yesterday after my water change.
How often are you changing your cartridge? Do you have media other than the cartridge?
with 1ppm ammonia, I would expect the fish to show some symptoms of ammonia burn, etc. Are you seeing any?
If you have 1ppm do an urgent large (at least 70%) water change and stop feeding for a few days.

So, summer is here and unfortunately (for my tanks) that means more sun exposure. There is a large window in the room with the tanks and I always grow green water in the spring/summer. Previously, I’ve just let it run its course since it tends to go away in the fall, but this year I don’t want to deal with it.
What UV sterilizer would you recommend? Current, 2/3 tank are affected so ideally it would be something which is easily transferable. I know fluval makes an inline one, but it is expensive and I only have a canister filter on one tank so I could only use it on that one. Tank sizes are 10-25 gallons.
Thanks!

What about a vivarium for mourning geckos? I think 10 gallons might be enough if you make it verticle.
you could do pea puffers

Those water parameters are great for a South/Central American tank.
Discus are gorgeous, but pricey & a lot of work to keep happy.
Some of the big, bruiser cichlids are very colorful, but limit tankmate selection somewhat.
Personally, I'd go with a 10-12 school of platinum blue or black angels & green neons with a bunch of cories & otos for clean up in a full planted scape.
Reality: get what your daughter wants & be happy it's not horses. 👍
When she loses interest, you can do "your" tank later on.
The green neons would mostly likely be eaten at some point…
Maybe a bit larger tetra, like royal tetra would fit in better

I would go with dwarf sag, in my tanks it grows extremely quickly and I have to rehome some monthly.
Same here. It’s been my “duckweed”. When I got rid of it while rescaping a tank I probably gave 200+ bits away

I don’t think dwarf sagitaria will grow low like the other two unless under high light. When I had it, it covered the whole tank quickly so that shouldn’t be a problem.

I have them on light substrate and if I were to do it again I would use black sand. I don’t think it matters all that much to the fish, but I think they would stand out better on dark substrate.

I am still looking up all this, and came across this,
Ammonia is rarely found in unpolluted surface water or well water, but water contaminated with sewage, animal wastes or fertilizer runoff may contain elevated levels. The US Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) has not established a maximum contaminant level (MCL) for ammonia in drinking water. I feel like there is a big possibility of ammonia in my tap, as I have tap water btw.
Keep making multiple posts, still trying to figure out WGY AND HOW this is even happening.
@johnnyxxl, thanks for the recommendation as well, thinking of moving this ammonia thing to my journal or ammonia spike topic instead of talking about this in the plants forum.
If you think its in your tap you should test it

What are you trying to feed him?

@macdaddy36 This one here is what concerns me. The tank has been trying to be cycled since February at least, possibly earlier, and yet he keeps coming up with ammonia. Makes zero sense. Even over feeding would grow extra bacteria over time. Unless there’s something else going on
Or he has chloramines and he using a dechlorinator that doesn’t do ammonia
-
Still wondering how much food. Video of you feeding would be very helpful.
someone probably already asked these but:
what dechlorinator do you use?
what does ammonia read out of the tap?

How old is the tank?
what and when and how much do you feed?
Do you know the pH when you set it up vs. the pH now?

What about now?

I always thought of an Ammonia spike as something that lasted a few days tops, but it seems like this had been going on for a month or more.
It seems like there could be some other underlying problem.
Post a picture of your normal feeding amount.
Could your test kit be expired? Are you following the instructions as best you can?
How did you cycle your tank? How did you decide your cycle was completed?

Azolla sp.

Salt probably won’t help. Glass catfish are scale less and might be more sensitive than other fish.
When you feed it are you able to see it eat?

Just so you know, typically kit lights, especially the petco/petsmart ones are way underpowered and wouldn’t be considered high light.
What kinds of filtration do you have? I tried floating plants (duckweed, RRF, DWL,) but they died, and I think it was because they were always getting stuck under the Hob and getting showered.

@Tony s, gotta a possible issue here, the online fish seller you mentioned (I think Cory said that we cannot mention them because they are now selling plants against AC) has only the option of buying 6, not 5, would 6 even fit in a 10g with the minnows?
6 is better than 5

I think meyer hatchery in ohio might sell these. Never had this specific breed but have had good experience with meyers. They only sell day old chicks though, not eggs.

Good idea unless the 10 gallon has fish in it, then I would be concerned about way too much flow.
also the intake tube might be too long

I’m having some trouble with cloudy water after I removed the sponge filter. I can’t add the sponge filter back now because I am using it in QT. This tank has an aquaclear 30 and fluval 107 right now.
I did a big waterchange and here is how it looks now.
I also added another sword from QT.
I got a red thicklip gourami for this tank. The other fish I was considering was an A. cacatoides but I decided on the gourami because I though this tank might be too small and the apisto might be agressive.

I did a big water change today and I installed a new internal filter. Here is how the tank looks now:
I added an Anubias and sword from QT. The anubias at the top is a nice spot for the splash tetra to hang out.
The panduro are also still doing well

Did you do a water change to get the 1ppm ammonia out?
