I have Harlies and my tanks have in the past had wonky ph and they did just fine. Is it ideal? Eh maybe not but honestly if you have 0 nitrite and ammonia- the really will be ok. You can try and slowly lower the pH by adding botanicals- woods, and my personal fave Indian Almond Leaf. I don't really recommend adding any ph down type chemicals as they are not stable ways of maintaining pH. It's a slow process. Most of the time pH isn't going to matter unless you're keeping something like Discus. A stable pH is most important.

Thank you, that is really reassuring!

  2. Today I tested my water for PH and found it had increased to 8.2, which according to online research is to high for my Harlequin Rasboras. On 6/15 the water was 7.4, and 6/22 the water was 7.6. According to my online research the maximum PH for Harlequins is 7.8. I added a few river rocks from the fish store and a few river rocks a local river. My question is that will the High PH effect the Harlequins, or not because they were slowly acclimated for a period of a few weeks. This aquarium is relatively new. If it is bad for the fish, is there anyway I can lower the PH without putting tannins in. I would like a PH of 7.8 or lower because I plan on keeping Honey Gouramis and Kuhli Loaches with the Rasboras.

Plants will use ammonia so they will help. The cycle does take some time and I’ve never seen it work out where there was a quick cycle unless you use media from an established tank.

looks like it is going well for you. Just stay on testing. The ammonia and nitrites can build rapidly in a stocked tank. So, just don’t get relaxed on checking it.

    you are doing great.

Yup, Still no Ammonia, or Nitrite.

I love my honey gourami and I agree that 3 is a good number. I am going to warn you of something because I fell into the trap. Yellow and red honey gourami are NOT the same species. Red honey gourami are actually thick-lipped gourami. Get 3 of one or the other and it will work nicely. I got 2 reds thinking I was helping out my yellow only to discover I wasn't.  I now have 3 of each lol. If it helps your decision at all, I prefer my reds. They are less fearful and out more often as well as much more interactive with each other.

    Good luck!

Thanks, that really helps because I was planning to buy some red ones.

  5. I recently bought some 3 Dwarf Water Lettuce from my local fish store.  They had them in an outside pond. Each DWL included one main plant and one smaller baby plant. After about a week the large main DWL have died back and a lot of roots have fallen off. However, the baby plants multiplied and now there is 9 small DWL.

Has anyone ever had any experience like this?

The picture on top is the new growth, and the picture below is the main plants.

I would personally change less water. We typically change water to get rid of nitrates, you don't have any so I'd step back to once a week max. At least while cycling and keeping an eye on parameters.  Good luck! I think your doing great so far!

Thanks, that makes a lot of sense.

  7. Hi, I recently set up a new planted tank. I am looking for stocking options. It is a standard 20 gallon high aquarium. Current stocking list below.

    - 5 Harlequin Rasbora

    - 1 Mystery Snail

    -1 Nerite Snail

-2 Ramshorn Snail (came with plants lol)

Plants include 3 Giant Saggitaria, 1 Amazon Sword, 2 Anubias, 1 Tiger Lotus, and some Water Lettuce.

Aquaneat Light, Aquaneat 20 sponge filter, Aquaclear 30 filter, Nicrew Heater.

I would like to fully stock my tank. The first fish I like are Honey Gouramis, they have both red and gold varieties at my LFS.  I think I would get 3 (1m, 2f), as I have heard they are social fish. I would like to finish off my school with 3 more Harlequin Rasboras but at the time I bought them the LFS only had 5 left (they have more now). The other fish I would like to get are Kuhli Loaches. I would get 5-6 to dwell at the bottom of the tank. I prefer Kuhli Loaches over Corydoras in looks but I am kind of open to both. Really want to try Honey Gouramis though. I would also like to get another Mystery snail so they can maybe breed. Any feedback on my current setup or future stocking list would be greatly appreciated.

Highly unlikely that the cycle is complete. NitrAtes should have a reading <0 after cycling. You would have to have a lot more plants to have 0 Nitrates.. Even then; I might be unsure about it.

Have you been tracking your daily water tests somewhere to show what your readings have been? This would be tremendously helpful for us to see your cycling progress.

Belo is a chart where I have been keeping track.

That is a Bladder snail.  Yes you can use traps it won’t completely get rid of them but helps control numbers. They are beneficial to shrimp tanks and many shrimp keepers swear by snails…myself included. Their digestion is poor so their waste grow all the right bacteria stuff for shrimp.
They feed on detritus and are mini housekeeper gardeners maintaining plants and cleaning hooks and crannies so I don’t have to.
They reproduce to the amount of excess food, and detritus/algae/ mulm available.  They are Mother Natures clean up crew.
I respect that not everyone finds beauty in them or enjoys them like me. There are other harsh chemical methods folks use for extermination but I’m unfamiliar with those. Best of luck whichever way you decide.

    Here are some info videos

Agree, that is definitely a bladder snail.

  10. My 20 gallon high planted fish tank had been cycling for about a week when I went to buy a few fish to continue the cycle. I got 5 Harlequin Rasboras from my LFS a few days ago. (I will get more when it is done cycling.) I have been feeding my fish for 3 days and still have had almost 0 reading of Ammonia, Nitrite, or Nitrate. (I say almost because a couple days ago I had 0.25 ppm Ammonia.) My test kit is an API All-in-one liquid test kit. Is it possible that the Ammonia is being consumed by the plants as soon as it is created by fish waste. I am a beginner and this is kind of confusing for me. There is a picture of the tank below.

    Thanks!
