TinaPax-Peeks Posted July 1 Share Posted July 1 I had heard that neon tetras have a bad habit of dieing for any reason or no reason. I had hesitated to buy them because of that; however, the red/white/blue color appealed to my hubby. I bought a dozen two weeks ago. One died 24 hours after arriving in quarantine. Last Thursday, I bought Cory's so I moved the tetras into the main tank (as first occupants) so the corys could have the quarantine tank. Main tank is a planted tank. All seemed well. Until it wasn't. Today, I found four dead tetras and one MIA tetra. Water parameters: 0 ammonia, 0 nitrites, 20 nitrates, pH 6.5, kg 80, gh 75. Temp is 80 I don't see spots indicating Ick. mynameisnobody Posted July 2 Share Posted July 2 Where did you buy them? When it comes to neons, cardinals, or rummynose, I’d only buy from Dans fish. He’s nailed the quality for those species. mynameisnobody Posted July 2 Share Posted July 2 Yep, as you get more and more into the hobby, you start to realize that if you factor cost of fish plus shipping, most times will still be cheaper with better quality in the long run. A $2 neon is cheaper than a $6 neon unless it keeps dying and you have to buy it 3-4 times in order to get lucky enough to keep it alive. Pepere Posted July 2 Share Posted July 2 I have gone with Green Neon Tetras myself from Aqua Huna and had good survivability of them. PetSmart is the only source in town. Otherwise, I have to go up to the city to a LFS. That is where I bought the Cory's last week. (They are in the quarantine tank so not exposed to the tetras.) If I go there for schooling fish to replace the neons, I probably won't get more neons.
