Weight of canopy on rimless tank

Yep, will cover the lid, lights, filter tubes, cords and water line

Correct, the rim is there for outward force, water pushing against the glass.  Your top just pushes downward.  You will be good.  I would seal the wood with something like polyurethane to keep it from warping being that close to the water.
