HelplessNewbie
I received a used 65 gallon tank yesterday. Will fill soon with water. It is a vintage tank with faux wood rims. If it holds water, should I leave the seals alone? Here is a photo.
TheSwissAquarist
Is the grit on the seal or in it?
nabokovfan87
I would lean towards removal and replacement. Is it just dirty, are you able to clean it with a soft brush and get some tighter photos.
HelplessNewbie
Will report tomorrow, when I have checked in the daylight. Am inclined to reseal, though, just to be safe.

HelplessNewbie
Okay, the seals are practically non-existent. There were no obvious leaks from overnight, but we decided to re-seal.
HelplessNewbie
Is this the right kind to use for resealing tanks?

Does it matter if I get sealant vs caulk?

Yeah. the stuff you're looking for should just say 100% silicone sealant. Caulk usually has some stuff mixed in there. https://www.homedepot.com/c/ab/types-of-caulks-and-sealants-for-your-projects/9ba683603be9fa5395fab90d0b119c3 In fact, the terms “caulk” and “sealant” are often used interchangeably, since both are used to fill joints and seams. However, the biggest difference between caulk and sealant is elasticity. Caulk is more rigid than sealants when dry. JChristophersAdventures
It's kind of like some food products... they are allowed to say it is 100%, even when it contains certain other ingredients or trace elements. In the case of silicone sealant, they add mold inhibitors which can be toxic to fish and can still claim it is 100% silicone. Best to stick with ones that are specifically labeled as aquarium safe (or call the manufacturer's customer service number to make sure).
