MannyThakk
Anyone have any native tanks? Seen on people net native fish from their local streams or rivers to keep in tanks. I live near the fox river and wondered if anyones done or got anything like that? Post below!
TheSwissAquarist
@Fish Folk has quite a thing about native fish … I’ll let him explain!
Fish Folk
I keep a bunch of natives in various tanks. None of mine come from local waters though. I order all of mine online, and stock tanks for breeding projects. Here’s a few of mine… Banded Darter (Etheostoma zonale) Banded Sunfish (Enneacanthus obesus) Southern Redbelly Dace (Chrosomus erythrogaster) Redtail Goodeid (Xenotoca doadrioi) Rainbow Shiners & Banded Sunfish Bluefin Killifish (Lucania goodei) Rainbow Shiners (Notropis chrosomus) Mountain Redbelly Dace (Chrosomus oreas) Now, my 6-yr-old and I do LOVE to net minnows from local creeks. We just don’t bring them home… Rosydided Dace Blacknose Dace Potomac Sculpin / Mottled Sculpin (hard to say which) White Sucker I made a list of NANF from all 50 states. Check through that list here… As for catch your local fish, be sure that you abide by local F&G laws. We use these “perfect dipnets” to catch ours… Feel free to followup with any questions, or message me directly. 2

Youre lucky that you have an unspoiled creek near you, most of the rivers and lakes in Switzerland are full of fertilizer run off😢. Would a 65 gallon pond be ok for a group of rainbow shiners??

Yes! 65 gal is great. Either try a pre-fabricated pond / tub or carefully put liner inside a pond if you dig it yourself.

What would the absolute minimum be, I haven’t even started digging yet (the ground is frozen & under 30 cm of snow!)

So, first step is to learn your gardening zone. It us measured by the coldest the weather gets. Next, you need to decide if you want a mini-pond _in the ground_ or _above ground_. I like above ground. I buy small 15-20 gal tubs, and I’m all set. But you can do much more with a larger volume. Just be sure it is wide and shallow rather than deep. I recommend finding a local garden center, and inquiring about what they have. They may sell garden ponds, have local zone-specific plants, etc.
