Anon
6 months ago one of my tanks experienced a nitrite spike; It lasted about a week and peaked around 1.5ppm. This male platy developed a dark red patch on his gills. It started small and grew to the size its been for 6 months. It doesn't extrude; just looks like normal gills Neither he nor any of the other fish from that tank show other signs of illness. Can I expect this patch to go away some day? Will it eventually kill him? What am I dealing with? He has some fin damage unrelated to the illness... And he's no longer in the tank where he got nipped. Colu
It's more than likely damage due to nitirte spike what I would do is a course of maracyn2 active is minocycline in food I use a quarter of a packet of maracyn2 1 table spoon of pellets one scoop of seachems focus 1 cap of garlic guard a few drops of water mix well feed a small amount twice daily for 7 days store any leftover medicated food in the fridge Edited March 21, 2022 by Colu

Are red spots like these indicative of an infection? Is it something that needs to be treated, or is it more of a scar?

What you need to worry about is the damaged area getting infected. So preventive treatment might be a good idea just in case. Especially if it's something that's not stress inducing like medicated feed.

The reddening can be a sign of an infection setting in that why I would do a course of maracyn2 in food
