  1. Here is a video. Look near the gill. There is something flopping around. Immediately after I filmed this is fell off, so maybe it’s just sludge from the aquatic environment. By the way, this is Percy, the fish that doesn’t appear to be sick (as in no pineconing). https://youtu.be/8Xz9T-OqLsk
  2. This makes sense. I’ll move him into QT. Should I try kanaplex first? Or should I order maracyn 2 or metroplex (that will be a few days for it to arrive). My LFS did not have either, but they had the API liquid nitrate test, so I bought that and will dispose of my old one. I did a 60% water change today, and added salt and prime conditioner to the main tank, as the benefits of salt seem good. I will try and do at least a small water change every day or two just to cycle out the old water in the main tank. It’s still odd that the nitrates were at zero. I’m not convinced they truly were. I will also add salt to the QT tank. I’ll try to post a video soon.
  3. Update. I noticed the sick fish has some small fibers hanging off of it on various parts of the body. They kind of wiggle as it moves back and forth. Is this just fish slime? Or could it be something more sinister? Both fish have it. I tried to upload the video of the fibers, but it said it can’t do videos. Does anyone know how to upload videos?
  4. Should I move the goldfish into QT or dose the main tank with salt and meds? What usually works better for a tank my size, and what stresses out the fish the least? I bought test strips and tested the nitrates of some of the water I saved to see what was wrong with it. It looked to be zero or near zero. I’m very confused.

  6. Thanks for the reply! It’s good to know I’m not the only one struggling with water changes. I don’t have a sink near enough to use hoses, so I have to do bucket water changes. It’s very exhausting after doing manual labor outside all day! I have not added any kanaplex yet, but when I used it last time, I put it directly in the water. I don’t have metroplex or maracyn 2 on hand. I have regular maracyn, but I don’t think that will work. I’ll order some meds. Would you suggest maraplex or maracyn 2 more? Or should I get both for future? Also, are you advising to dose the main tank with meds and salt and not move the sick fish into QT?
  7. Ok, I thought it was the test tube that needed to be shook. I guess I didn’t understand the instructions. I will add salt and get some test strips. Some information I can give now: • 40g breeder • lightly planted tank • 1 oranda goldfish (4 inches) And 1 fantail goldfish (6 inches) • I feed a small pinch of omega one goldfish pellets every other day • I don’t have a water change schedule, but I haven’t done a water change in at least two or more weeks. I want to do at least a 50-75% every week from now on. My angelfish tank I do 50% every few weeks and they seem fine, but there’s tons of plants in there. Goldfish produce more waste so I know I should be doing a change every week. I was having mental health problems so I haven’t been doing as much as I should. But I want to fix that. I actually got rid of a BN Pleco tank because I could not keep up with maintenance. I will send pictures when I can.
  8. Ah there we go. I bet nitrates are the cause. I added another goldfish a while ago, and I must not be doing enough water changes to accommodate them both.
  9. I added drops of solution #1, shook for 30 seconds, added drops of solution #2, shook for 1 minute. Let rest for 5 minutes. Was I supposed to shake the actual bottle before adding to the rest tube? I did not do that.
  10. 0 nitrate is odd. I have several Anubius plants, but I wouldn’t call that heavily planted. I am using API liquid test kit. I added the drops and shook the test tubes exactly as the instructions said. That’s part of why I was confused. Also, to clarify, my other fish that died of dropsy was in different conditions and a different tank. That is not connected with this situation. I realize I didn’t make that clear. I have aquarium salt and kanaplex. I believe @Colu gave me some instructions on medication last time. I will move the sick fish into quarantine and start treatment. I will also do a 75% water change on the display tank so that if there is a water chemistry issue, it won’t affect the other goldfish who lives in that tank.
  11. Hi. Today I noticed my goldfish has very slight porcupining scales, which I assume means bloating. I immediately tested my water and I got the following results. ammonia = 0.25 ppm nitrite = 0 ppm nitrate = 0 ppm I was a bit confused by the results because I’ve had the tank up for several months, so it should be cycled by now. There is algae growth among other things that signal a cycled tank. Anyway, I haven’t done a water change in a while, so I will do that. But do you think the ammonia is what’s causing the bloating? I am very worried for the fish! I had another goldfish that died from dropsy, so I truly hope I caught this soon enough to reverse the effects!
  12. Thanks. The edges do not have a fuzzy appearance. It looks to be more jagged on all the edges.
  13. Hello. My betta has deteriorating fins and red patches near the base of its fins. I noticed the red patches quite a while ago. At that time I began giving kanaplex, but then life happened and I went through a severe depression where I wasn’t able to function or take care of my betta well. I feel quite bad about it. I have a few tanks. The fish in the bigger tanks (angelfish, BN plecos, goldfish) are all doing fine because they have lots of plants, filters, heaters, and are cycled. Ollie’s tank is small—about two gallons. It has a plant in it and a hiding space, but no filter. I think his ailment stemmed from not doing enough water changes and unplugging the heater (and forgetting to turn it back on). WHAT I’M PLANNING TO DO: Get the heat back to where it needs to be. Do water changes every day. Any suggestions on how to treat the fin rot? I can post a picture tomorrow if need be. I’m sorry fishy…I’ve failed you. 😔
  14. I’ll do that! They are quarter to half-dollar sized now. The store didn’t sell smaller ones, so I that’s what I got. Is that around the size they begin to pair up? I got a black, a white, two striped, and two gold. Not sure the morphs. LFS said they are from a local breeder who produces healthy and hearty fish. A few fins look a possibly look a teeny bit torn, which I didn’t notice in the store, but there’s no sign of illness, and I’ve got meds on hand and a QT tank if things go awry. They all seem bright and healthy and beg for food. It’s pretty funny! They have such interesting personalities and are not scared. Basically what I’m saying: angels are cool. 🙂 Here’s a pic. I’ll make a journal and post better pictures and the names of all the fish! (Yeah, I already named them).
  15. Tis what I did! Got 6 from my LFS today. They’re really cute 🥰
  16. I have a BN pleco and 3 corys. I had more corys, but they disappeared. Honestly can’t say what happened to them. I don’t plan on getting more corys though because I don’t think they’re right for me at the moment. The pleco is doing phenomenal though! He loves his driftwood! I had cherry barbs in there—they were nice and healthy—but I moved them into another tank to make room for angels.
  17. I do have a LFS, thankfully, and I know they take in fish. (I dropped off a bothersome blue gourami with them). When I purchased my BN plecos for breeding. They said they would trade one in if it ended up being the wrong sex. In that situation I ended up with a male and female, which was perfect, but I know they seem to work with customers. I am going to the LFS after work today and will see prices and such. I’ll probably talk to someone and make a choice of what I’m going to do. I have a feeling I’ll buy 6 juveniles. Depends on what I see.
  18. Ah. I believe the cause was stress from being chased by a dominant goldfish. It wasn’t exactly being bullied per say—no nipping or anything like that—but the dominant goldfish was definitely boss. I didn’t have any decor in the QT tank and it was a fairly small tank (10g), so I’m guessing that was the mistake. Circumstances will be different in the 40b, as there is cover and 4x as much space. Water conditions seemed stable in the QT tank. No visible ammonia or nitrite—at least not that I saw. There were some nitrates, and I removed those often will regular water changes. I don’t think parameters are what caused the dropsy—especially because the other goldfish was in the same conditions and did not develop. I could be wrong. Just thinking out loud. Do you think putting them back together will cause the stress again and start the whole thing over?
  19. If the fish does recover, when do you think it’s safe to introduce him to my display tank? Dropsy is not a contagious condition, am I correct?
  20. I meant mating pair, but I didn’t consider all females. That might be cool. Is it possible to tell the sex of juveniles?
  21. You’re probably right. Though I do have a track-record of fish disappearing out of my tanks (a few other corys, and some WCMMs). I thought maybe they jumped, but there’s never remains on the floor. Besides, my lid is pretty tight. But it’s also possible I sucked up the remains when I did a water change without realizing it. I’ll probably never know. Haha no. I like the big angels anyway. 1 pair of koi or black/orange would be super cool. I think that’s what I’m gonna do. Thanks for all the info! 🙂
  22. Do you mean like 4? 6? How do you acquire a pair? Do you buy already paired adults? Or do get 6-8 juveniles and rehome all the fish except a single pair? These might work, but I’d have to check availability and price.
  23. Good news! Bloating is down, fish is voraciously accepting food. His appetite is back! Still a bit lethargic when not eating, but he’s doing better today. He’s not gasping for air or anything like that. I’ve done one dose of kanaplex so far and the results seem positive. It may just be an upward swing before the final drop, but I’ll take my chances and continue the kanaplex treatment.
  24. Just an update… Finished the stand last week! Here’s a picture of before painting and after. Sanded, primed, painted, and poly-something. Please excuse the messy cords, I’m still rearranging things in my room for the best layout, but I thought I’d show you guys how things are looking. Also, as a side note, the fake-coral decor is just holding the wood down to waterlog it. This is not the final setup! I’m planning on filling the whole thing with anubias and flipping the coral thing backward so it looks kinda like a tree stump. I’m going for a woody-planty look. Anubias seems like the gold plant for my fish, as he’s completely ignoring it. No snacks.
  25. Yeah, it may come to that. I’m gonna give him a day or two to see what happens, but it’s not looking good.do you have any resources on how to do clove oil euthanization? It’s all sort of weird. My other fancy goldfish is doing great, finally in the display tank. I kept them both in QT in the same conditions. So I’m guessing this one was more easily stressed and just a weaker fish in general, or had worse genetics. I got them from my LFS, but I’m not sure what their source was. All I know, is the healthy one was over 2x as expensive. I thought it was because of color, but maybe it was from a better line of genetics. Who knows.
