  1. Brought home a betta yesterday and was wondering what sex and type it is. Was labeled as koi in the store. It obviously doesn’t have long flowing fins, but perhaps is a short-finned variety. I am not a betta strain expert. Anyone have an idea? Also, the little guy is flaring its gill fins at me. Seems like a feisty one.
  2. Okay! I had forgotten that this was an option. I have some salt—not a “good” brand but it is aquarium salt from Walmart. Would that work? Or should I buy something better? Or is aquarium salt all basically the same?
  3. Hello. I have a simple question How do you safely do ich prevention with ich-x medication? I have a new batch of mollies that appear healthy now, but since I got them from PetSmart I am guessing they are carrying ich. I want to do prevention treatment rather than current infection treatment. The last batch of mollies I bought suddenly died, and I believe it was from over medication. My new batch is in a larger tank—a 10 gallon quarantine bin with a sponge filter and heater. I am doing a 25% water change every day. Water temp is about 76 degrees. I read instructions on the bottle, but it doesn’t say how long to treat the fish for, and it assumes you are treating active infection. • Should I use a lower dose of ich-x than recommended? • How many doses? And how long between doses? If anyone has any advice I would appreciate it!!! ❤️
  4. JOURNAL ENTRY #3 Well, the new fish all died. Except one. He’s not looking the best but will perhaps make it. Sad day. 😢 The fish all died at the same time and suddenly. Didn’t appear to be ick, maybe they got zapped?? I don’t know. I’ve got a Fluval M series heater but I did accidentally (lazily) leave it running while doing a water change for like a minute. Perhaps it got broken. I am going to set up a larger QT bin, use a different heater, and make ABSOLUTELY SURE I was dosing meds correctly. There’s so many factors as to why they died that it’s very dissatisfying. Hopefully I can correct the mistake so I can actually see them through QT.
  5. JOURNAL ENTRY #2 So…I immediately regretted adding the hornwort because the whole thing shedded and looked TERRIBLE. I moved the guppy grass onto the “tree” to make the leaves and the result is better anyway. Today I added two tall Amazon swords to the tank. Just waiting for the store to get another so I can plant something in front of the heater to cover up/fill in that area. I also finally put root tabs around every plant and am looking forward to the new growth that will surely come! This is what the tank looks like currently. The plan is to make this into a molly tank. I am going to cycle out the guppies and cherry barbs naturally, so I will be left with only mollies, snails, and a BN pleco. I bought some young gold nugget mollies from the store today and am treating them for ich (preventative). They will be in quarantine for at least three weeks. At that time I will check if they are healthy enough to put into my display tank.
  6. It’s actually three pieces of spiderwood. I have found if you put the wood upside-down the shapes are more interesting and dynamic.
  7. Hello 🙂 I’ve decided to turn a new leaf in my aquarium adventures. I’ve had multiple tanks for a few years, but felt as if none of them were truly at their best. So for the present, I’m going to downsize to on one tank and really pour some love into it. I want to make a journal of my progress with this tank! THIS WEEK I decided to give up my goldfish (for various reasons) and move the stock and plants from my 20 gallon into his 40 breeder. I spent a little extra on new plants and am very happy with the results! Current stock: 1 BN pleco, 2 cherry barbs (leftovers from a previous batch), 6 guppies, and 2 snails. The guppies are looking a little ripped up. Not sure when or why that happened, but they seem active and are eating well. One looks a little sickly, but I think he’s looked malformed since I got him. They are in much cleaner conditions now (I had neglected their tank somewhat). I plan on adding a school of orange or red colored livebearers, leaning toward a small group of swordtails. I had always stayed away from livebearers at the beginning of my time in the hobby because I thought they were boring and too “fake” looking. Now their “fake” colors are exactly why I want them! They are super cool fish, perhaps my favorite. I’m going to hold off on getting new fish for the time being, address any potential fin rot on the guppies, order some root tabs, and let the plants settle in. I know some of the Amazon swords will die back before growing in for real, but I’m very excited for this project!
  8. Oh, good. I am glad it is nothing to worry about. I’d just never seen that much buildup before! Thanks everyone 🙂
  9. Hello. I am cleaning out my fish tank. It’s always had an algae problem. This summer I was very distracted from keeping up tank maintenance and the algae must have sat for a few months. When I pulled off the lid, there are soft, springy, dark stalactites growing from the lid, about half an inch long. Is this a typical algae formation? Or is something more sinister going on? Has anyone else experienced this?
  10. This is my favorite fish of the ones I bought. He has an Endler-type pattern so I’m wondering if he’s a hybrid. I wasn’t too worried about the guppies matching this time, but I could see in the future buying online.
  11. Thanks for all the suggestions. You helped me learn a bit about some fish I’d never heard of before!! I ended up going a completely different route and chose all male guppies (prices a little more in my budget range). They are currently in QT, wiggling around happily.
  12. I looked up some of the species you mentioned. It’s so hard to decide. I like the white clouds…however, I’ve had them before and have decided I like the way they look better with a dark substrate. The more I think about it the more I'm sure I’d like to get a blue fish, so I’m leaning toward green neon tetras or just regular neon tetra. Those fish are similar size, so what would be a good number to place in my tank? A rough number would be helpful. I was thinking 10-12 as I know their bio laid is tiny. But do you think that would be too much with the pleco and 2 cherry barbs?
  13. Hello all! I am downsizing one of my tanks. I set up a 20g long today to replace the old one (33g). I would like some advice on fish to add. My previous tank had the following stock: • 1 BN pleco • 2 cherry barbs • 1 electric blue platy • 1 angelfish Those were essentially the survivors of a few different schools. I am definitely going to give the angelfish and platy back to my LFS (they take in fish), but I want to keep the pleco. The cherry barbs could go either way depending on what type of fish I add. My main question is this: does anyone have any suggestions on small fish to keep in a 20g long. I want to buy a big group of very small colorful fish, and was thinking neon tetras. Any thoughts would be much appreciated. Here is a picture of my tank for inspiration purposes 🙂
  14. Thanks! Just wanted a second opinion. He seems happy and healthy.
  15. Hi everyone. Just noticed today that my goldfish, Percy, eye looks a bit more extended than usual. He’s always had white color in that area, but I just wanted to run it by all of you because I am not sure how much goldfish eyes are supposed to stick out. Except from his eye, he’s healthy as ever (and the eye is clear, not cloudy). Just wanted some opinions.
