Here is my update. Still cycling the tank, can’t get the ammonia to spike. Began to add a pinch of food daily after 3-4 days nothing. Maybe need to add a 1/4 teaspoon of liquid ammonia though. The nitrate measures 20ppm as if yesterday.
am losing patience; would like to add fish soon. One other thought I have two snails 🐌 in my 5gal Fluval, which I use for plants to grow my hornwart. I could add those two guys; but I don’t want my SA cichlids to eat them when I introduce the fish.
thoughts? Yes I thought of buying Frits liquid ammonia as well, but it will take a week to arrive so I decided to wait…

Glad to hear your back! I’m back to after about the same time out. I remember one thing from an old man who raised paca that were about 18 inches. (He Fed them bananas and green leaf veggies). He said sometime the best thing is to do nothing and let the natural process take place. So when your starting up that new tank you can do a few things to cycle. Do a natural -Normally without any store bought bacteria (long time 6-10 weeks) and a capful of Ammonia with a pinch of fish food. Do not add dirt form your garden! This may introduce harmful organisms. You can add 2 teaspoons of organic soil. I.e miraclegrow that’s what (she)walstead method used.
in any event something the do nothing will establish a better bio filter in the long run and you won’t suffer fish loss. 🙂

Wow! It will settle and if you add a filter with poly floss it will clear.
Don’t rinse Fluval stratum!
AGAIN
don’t rinse Fluval stratum!
I’m aware that Fluval says you can rinse it lightly but I would not. Stratum is volcanic dirt baked in the form of little round balls, so once it gets wet it acts like a sponge and begins to disintegrate like dirt. Fluval says it will last two years Before it separates. All the brown is all the micro-nutrients that you’re washing out of the dirt. (You’ll may have to add some root tabs prematurely depending how deep your substrate is.
A regular filter will easily remove any dust particles or other stuff that might be in the bag at the time of packing. You should also run your aquarium for a good 7 to 10 days in my opinion before adding any fish after you put Servall stratum as your substrate . Enclosed is a picture of my Fluval stratum I unrinsed underwater and soaking as I do my aqua scape.I will have to add Co2 and am still looking for cheap machines; I may go with a reactor system because once I load up the tank with fish (30+) I should not need Co2… thoughts on that last part.

Hello and Happy New Year!
I just discovered this forum and could not be happier! I’m getting back into freshwater aquariums w/plants from a 12 year absence.
just purchased a used 55gal and metal stand. Plan on building a community tank with Cory’s, Tetras, and a few angels.
substrate I purchased, Fluval Stratum and caribsea sand (ph neutral). Stratum will be on sides and back, sand in center for the Cory’s to play in.
haven’t decided on my plants yet? Any thoughts folks?

Very nice Co2 set up! Love the red tank too… 😊
I wouldn’t know where to begin looking, nor refill my tank when it’s empty. I was looking at the reaction systems with citric acid and soda….they were not too expensive and available mail order. I know you need to get your tank hydro tested every few years for Saftey.

Wow, that’s brown!
I too purchased Fluval Stratum. I hadn’t put it in the tank yet, but red a few article and I am choosing not to rinse it when I start scaping.

Get some mystery snails, depending on your tank size, 2 should work well and within a week you’ll see vast improvements

Hey Im kind of new to the whole fishkeeping thing and to this forum. Thats why I might need some help!
Basically, I got a 20 gal planted tank with 5 pea puffers in there. I tried to create as much hiding spots as I can and grow plants everywhere. I also feed them atleast every second day mostly every day though.
Sadly my peas still seem to hate each other and are very territorial and chase each other around alot. I know that thats kind of normal to some degree but I heard everyone say that as long as you have lots of plants and stuff it wont be problem. So as a noob I wanted to ask if there is more stuff I should try or check on? What could be a reason or is it just how they are? Did I just get extra aggressive ones?
Thanks for the help in advance ❤️I’m sorry you’re having difficulty with them. Although I never raised any I watch enough videos on them because they are so fun to watch. If you don’t know already, Sea puffers are considered aggressive, they are carnivores and love worms 🪱…
you may have two males fighting over a female or a territory in the tank.
if you keep the water conditions as close to nature this might help them not to be so aggressive. I don’t know about the P size but I know the other puffer fish when they mature like brackish water.
do you have a pic of your tank setup?

Hi there, welcome to the forum. I'm low tech and love a good easy plant. My favorites of these are Anubias (of any kind) as they can just be glued to wood and rocks and look real nice- easily moved when you want to rearrange. I also love Java- Windelov, Narrow Leaf etc, another plant that's glued to things and propogates easily. I don't use fancy lights or fertilizer and all of these do really well in my tanks- even better if you do do those things. I'm a fan of a few stem plants too, Red Needle Leaf, Ludwigia Super Red, and Bacopa.
Thank you for your ideas. I love Anubis and I have always planted mine in the substrate. They grow slow but flourish. I woujj lol d like some tall grassy plants for the back and some carpet ones for the sides. I do plan on putting horn wort in there also.

So I own my first canister filter...

Look up your filter on Amazon. Read the reviews and questions for your product.
if that doesn’t help I have a pen-plax canister 1500 I would sell you. I bought it new for my 55 gallon I’m starting up. I thought the extra size 350gph, would help, but the flow rate is too strong. (I went up in size because I knew I wanted cichlids). It’s rated for up to 200gallon tanks. I still have it hooked up for cycling the tank and am waiting to install my other canister filter, an Aqueon Quietflow 200. Rated for up to 55gallon tanks. (200gph). I have plants so the extra filtration the plants provide should be fine.
enclosed is pictures if your interested. I do love how easy it is to operate, just don’t need it.
