Thanks, I have some plastic pieces meant to cover that gap somewhere in the depths of my shed. I’ll have to launch an expedition to find them.
also is best to use sand and not gravel for the substrate, just in case you did not know this

I order some barley extract this morning, I will update on how this works out in my tank.

Never tried it myself other than in a pond I used to have in my backyard of a house before this one. It decomposes over about 3 - 4 months and while decomposing releases hydrogen peroxide and tannin which inhibit algae, it works best with lots of aeration. Always keep it in filter media bags unless you enjoy fishing for debris. I was a bit underwhelmed by its performance in the pond, and achieved better results by adding lots of plants and enlarging the pond with a planted bog section that essentially worked like a sump.
However I've heard several people claim they used it in their tanks with success by adding about a handful of it in a filter media bag either to their canister, or HOB and replacing it every three months. As a disclaimer I have to mention I never saw their tanks either in person, or in images.
Hope this helps.
the one tank I want to try this in has lots of plants but black beard algae is trying to take a foot hold no matter what I try. I really don't want to tear this tank down to get rid of it so I'm searching for natrual ways to take care of it.

I made my Aquaclear silent by very carefully cleaning it. inside and out. Then rinsing it several times. Then letting it dry thoroughly. Then putting it in a bag on a shelf in the basement next to rest of the aquarium stuff I might need someday.
I'm currently using Marineland Pros, better but not perfect. I wish I could convince myself that a sponge or two is good enough.
I have not had any real issues with my Marineland penguins and just cant see paying for the Marineland pro. With that said what is the big diffrence between them besides the $$$?

Has anyone ever tried barley Straw to get rid of algae in their aquarium? I have read it works even on the black beard algae. I'm thinking of trying to see if it works, I read its slow but natrual so I'm thinking of trying it out. Any info yall might have plz chime in.

Marineland penguin filters are not bad if your on a tight budget, I have used them for years now. The bio-wheel is hit or miss. I have two that the bio-wheels wrok great and two that they work so so.
The next HOB I will buy will be a seachem....

I like to be on the safe side, reason I lost fish cause I was into much of a hurry.
If Lil Spooky is doing okay where he is now I would let him be and let that 55 run a week or more.
Now that is just me, cause of past mistakes but if you feel good about your 55 its your call.
Let us know how it goes.

I just soaked mine in a bath of hot salty water for 12 hrs.....

Just asking but would it be better to use flexible tubing so you dont have to use 90 degree elbows. I'm sure the $$ would be more but might be more efficient. I'm not sure so I just wanted to ask.

My question doesn’t concern the stocking but the possible behavior of my honey gourami if I add a female.
my thoughts are it may are could effect the whole tank, maybe not but why risk the others for one more wet pet when you know its already overstocked.
I would put some real thought in getting another tank for your gouramis if you want more thn one or want to bred them.
Thats just my .02 but heck who am I
