  1. Just a random idea, when we go (North America) 100% electric vehicles.

What about an automatic speed limit adjustment depending on zone of city or highway etc? Preventing the vehicle from being able to go over a certain speed.

Random, but with all the tickets and worse consequences I hear about when it comes to speeding what do you think?

  2. We have some hornwort floating around a 55g that houses some rcs, yellow, and Amano shrimp. They do travel amongst the stem plants and filter too.

As well as a Mikrogeophagus altispinosus male and a female Apistogramma Cacatuoides. No shrimp death lol, sure it's never 100% that any fish won't do it...but our Ram doesn't care about shrimp and the Cacatuoides rather takes them and Guppy/Endler fry under her wing...or fin lol. Protecting them from our medium school of Hyphessobrycon herbertaxelrodi's...

Never had a problem with Otocinclus and any shrimp, very sensitive those Otocinclus!

But yeah Amano shrimp are very confident lol so we throw maybe an extra piece or 2 of cucumber or veggie treat in that tank...as even the Poecilla will snack on veggies...

I'm sorry that I don't remember what I used. I went on Youtube and watched a few videos and used the paint recommended there. While I was painting I thought I was doing a poor job because the paint dripped and ran. But it really looked fine from the front even if it looked sloppy from the back. You just have to be sure to get complete coverage.

One of the guys on Youtube turned the aquarium on its side to paint the back, and that eliminates a lot of the dripping and running that comes with painting a vertical surface. That was just not an option for me because of the size of the aquarium.

Hmm....maybe I will use a roller to apply although a brush may be less bumpy??...I'll do some YouTube surfing and see what's best and available. Thanks

I like black. the background on my 120 is painted black. If I had it to do over again I might try Plasti-Dipping it black. The black plastic coating might come off easier if I want to change the background. Platinum angels and green/red plants look good against the black background.

I am working on a new peninsula aquarium between the dining room and kitchen, so that will be different. Thinking about trying the dark orange "ultimate coverage" koi angels for the peninsula set-up.

For our 125g build I plan on painting black for background...any paint recommendations??

    Thanks

  5. Great topic,

Black backgrounds look really good with real or even plastic plants. Tends to help those greens pop!

We use posterboard for black backgrounds. But do have a couple tanks with the graphic backgrounds that feature some desired but unachievable plants! Lol

We rather leave the sides open, but have closed off a couple sides due to predatory fish peeking on the innocent inhabitants!

*Edit* For applying backgrounds we use scotch tape for solid black, or the double sided for graphics

  6. Great post!

I literally thought there was just one Echinodorus...the Echinodorus Amazonicus. Lol!

After looking at the other main ones found in hobby, yeah it does look like Echinodorus 'Martii'. I thought at first it may be the Echinodorus grisebachii or Echinodorus amazonicus. As the leaves appear quite large, but that kinda signature wrinkle in leaf makes it look very much like the 'Martii'

  7. Tank looks 👌

We have had Danio rerio with Poecilia and they seem okay with the shorter finned Poecilia....but longer finned (anything really lol) is a target with Danio rerio. Maybe not always or right away, but its very possible they will harass the Poecilia...

They are very active fish, Danio rerio and in a small school are ok, but will harass other fish, and definitely snack on any fry lol. But not older fry, weird I know lol... but they never snacked on any fry that were decent size but still unidentifiable.

But again, we successfully kept them with sorter finned Poecilia, in a 55g. No fry, no nipping at least what we saw and added a nice effect to the already colorful tank!

You certainly have enough plants etc for the Danio's to zip around and through so a small school usually harassed itself...and usually eats their own eggs...but I wouldn't completely bet on the Danio eating all the eggs...as we have had Danio rerio parents leave a ton of eggs and fry alone to grow amongst them...yep.

Sorry for page response and if I am just repeating what someone else has said. I would say Yay to shorter finned Poecilia and small school of Danio rerio, as other than above mentioned it did work for us. You could opt for Endler's Guppy as they are smaller and may be of less interest to the Danio's...

    Hope this helps,

We are new to the hobby, but continue to learn and observe some wild stuff!

Does anyone have experience keeping these two fish.. together.. in the same tank?

My plan is, 14 WCM and 20(ish) Tiger Barbs in a 40 Breeder. I've seen people say they should be fine, and others say something quite the opposite.

I think the minnows will school tighter (they basically don't right now, it's them and a goldfish in the 40b) and the barbs will eventually ignore them.

It'll be planted pretty heavily as most of my plants are already in there and my plan for my 55 (tiger Barb current home) does not include plant friendly fish. So, any advice, tips, concerns?  Thanks in advance! 🙂

    Hello,

In our experience of keeping Tiger Barbs, even in larger schools, is eventually they nip eachother to death and certainly almost any tankmate....regardless of their population count. They just like to lol, chase and nip.

Honestly not sure if they really care for plants, as they are just too preoccupied with chasing eachother lol.

I would opt out of keeping another smaller fish with them, but that's me. I avoid those pesky barbs as they just turn into fin nipping bullies lol....Great looking fish.

Good luck though, maybe you will get lucky for awhile.

When you have too many culls I think that’s where a “pet” fish like an Oscar or Vieja comes into play. My local store will take as many Japan Blues as I can give them. I can’t imagine what they’ll say when I start bringing in my Blue Hawaiian Moscows. That might be a future cross - Japan Blue and a Hawaiian! Aloha!

Oooh that would be a nice cross for sure, just the name alone right, lol sold!

Yep too far north although if you drive south you could grab some but imagine the border might be an issue.
As for The Miami Vice Endler line that would take the kind of tank space I dream about but the Mrs is not ready for. She wants to get me a Fish Shed to ban all but the prettiest displays to.

Yeah I figured we were too far lol....It seems like one just cant ever have enough tank with these fish, eat...breed...eat..breed lol. Prolific is an understatement!

Probably have to set up tubs to keep up with it, try to keep them separated as we go for more specific traits...

Ah the Mrs doesn't want more tank, that sucks but hey at least there is another option like a shed or other building lol. We got a basement to do this in, but Guppy breeding will probably take this basement over if we are not careful lol. Great looking fish but we do like other fish too!

On places like Kijiji people sell them for as little as 50cents, so I see how one can easily hold hundreds over time because you can't sell them due to this.

@CalmedByFishThe Japan Blues are indeed that blue. No filter on that pic. Obtained them from LRB. They are stunners. I only have a couple female Endlers so I will need to get them bred out this fall and winter.

The other one “Miami Vice” was an offspring from a Japan blue female and a black bar male. My black bar colony is gone due to a livebearer illness.

Can't wait to see the 'Miami Vice Endler' line hit the stores ! Sorry to hear about the black bar colony.

@NorthernAquaristI think it will be interesting to see how he looks in another month. As @CalmedByFishindicated those are not his final coloration. Keep posting here with pics!

I have some P and K class Endlers that are a lot of fun. 819A5B6A-368D-4553-A81C-D4A5ABD28C06.jpeg.d76f0d96abe96824410878149ec53117.jpegC58EED33-4F1D-49D6-A354-81BB216D3B33.jpeg.bfe377e53c8bca2ecbe14a2cfb1a9827.jpeg

this one is the most interesting I call him Don Johnson as he looks like an episode of Miami Vice kind of a cool neon blue and pink.

Yeah definitely will, and great looking fish! Really nice blues, the Miami Vice one is interesting. Can't find any Japanese lineage around here so a bitnof a treat to see them lol

Ooh! Fill me in on this info, please! My endlers have had about 25 fry who are now old enough to identify the boys. There are only 3. The tank's temp range is 74-77. I've heard that if you remove males, they'll make more to even out the population, but the only male with them is the dad. So what's this temp info?

    Edit: correct temp range

I have read that higher Temps produce more males and lower produce more females. This was research done in wild caught though, so maybe different for tank bred?

Maybe not just temp plays a role, but general hardness?

Although same tank parameters and same temp for another set of fry born in tank beside this one produced about 40 although some were snacked on....we saved 32 and 12 are male....but different males bred with the same plain endler females...very different  results! I continue to scratch my head in wonder lol

  14. Thanks for the replies everyone, and great looking fish @Taco Playz !

We are still new to the Poecilla but have already had some nice surprises like this guy. Was trying to find similar fish online, to name it lol. But I think we will wait like @CalmedByFishmentioned to see if more Endler comes out.

Temp in tank where he and his 29 sisters were born was 78°F....so I'm guessing if temp was 80°F it would have produced a more even ratio of m/f.

May put some fancy females in a tank with him, see what jumps out the gene pool!

    Thanks again

  15. This reminds me of an Endler we have that for whatever reason had a hair size piece of black silicone from out of mouth to out of the behind. Didn't know what to do so a day passed. Was still eating but appeared this was nit processing further. It was one piece I missed when preparing the tank.

So I checked all other seals and all good no other pieces.

What we did was netted him and then gently kinda held him and slightly pulled this to see if there was any kind of give. There was, and he literally slipped down this piece of silicone, off my fingers and ploop, right back into fish tank! Got lucky im guessing, seems fine and is part of our Endler breeding project lol.

I triple check seals now lol

  16. Hello,

Father and son freshwater hobbyist's from Canada. Started January 2020, have grown from one 10g tank to now three 10g's, one 40gb, and one 55g.

Have bred A.Cacatuoides, Danio rerio, and now Guppies/Endlers!

A very rewarding hobby, and a testy one at that lol. But the enjoyment is worth the occasional failure, and the abundant info out there now makes it that much more enjoyable. One has to sift  through it though, as many aspects of this freshwater hobby seem to come down to personal opinion or region where the hobbyist lives. Or worse just plain old bad info.

Will add some pics soon, hope to share some Guppy breeding and other projects we have with the community if interested.

    Thanks,

    Have a good 1
