  1. I finally decided on a yellow fish in my tank!! I chose to add a school of albino silver tipped tetra! So far 6 in my quarenteen tank. Thank you all for your suggestions!! It took me longer to decide than I thought. I visited the lfs last weekend and he had just gotten these in. I needed to clean the quarenteen tank and make sure parameters were good b4 throwing some fish in. Let me tell ya....it was hard walking away with no fish that day!🤣 but I believe that is what saves fishy lives!!

Again many thanks for all the great ideas!

That’s awesome congratulations! My Pandas have been BUSY! I’m not trying to breed them at this time and I got 7 new babies swimming around! Super cute and exciting.

They are adorable!! Probably my favorite fish!! I love watching them look for food! I have peppered Cory's and they seem so shy. Never see them during the day. Congratulations on your babies!!

I can't tell if it's metal or glass.  If it's metal you might be able to scrub off some of it with a scotchbrite pad, but it's likely to scratch the metal a bit.  Scotchbrite would also work for glass.

I did use a scotchbrite! Thank you!! And a kitchen too bc I couldn't find a razor. Good as new!! Whew! I was worried about fire, electrocution ect.

Thank you all!! Good as new!!

@Sweetpickles is the glass damaged?  localized issues like that (hot spots) which block the flow could damage the heater.  In one of the photos it almost looks like melted plastic, but I just wanted to ask / verify that the heater itself was structurally sound (externally) from what you could tell.

they have ones designed for acrylic.

So far it looks fine. I havnt gotten all the crud off yet.

I will have to look for the razor for acrylic! Thanks. The more I chip away at this the more I see that the heater is looking brand new again!

Looks like some stuff grown on it.  I suppose it could be a sponge?  I would try cleaning it off with a razor blade if it's crispy/crusty.  Is it still soft at all?  If so you might be able to brush it.

It was like cement. I decided to soak it in vinegar water. Hopefully no harm to heater. I can scrape it off with fingernail in thinner areas. Where it is thick I will prob have to let it soak a while.

Thank you for responding. I will look for a razor blade. I don't have any for my tanks as this tank is acrylic.  I have been trying to figure out what I will use to scrape it off with.

    Thanks!

  6. I have fresh water sponge growing in my hob reservoir in my 36 gal. I was going to turn my heat down in my tank a degree or two and spotted this brown crusty burnt looking substance on my heater! Could this be fresh water sponge burnt to a crisp? How can I get this off? The heater is working fine. Seems to be no visible damage anywhere on the heater. I do have it growing on my heater in the 20 gal but it is does not look like this!

We have a snow storm coming and the closest place for me to get a new heater is lfs 15 miles (no big deal but $$$)

Another pic shows the bracket it was sitting in. The dark spot on heater was i side the holder.

Yes it is! I feel like it's verification that I am giving the fish a healthy environment. I hope I am!

  8. I am not a fish breeder. I'm just very excited to find new life in my 20gal! Last Friday I was peering into my little eco system and saw some swift movement.  I couldn't believe what I was seeing!! Two baby corydoras!! I have 3 adults. 1 of them is probably about 4yrs and the other 2 are only about 1yr. I never expected any babies. I have never seen their eggs. And I have a Panda garra that I was sure would eat any babies. I think it was he that wiped out my shrimp colony. He seems to be leaving the corys alone and they do have little crevices to hide in. I also recently have had one mountain minnow fry survive.

Just an exited new fish baby momma sharing!

Mine just appeared in my tank one day. If you search on YouTube there is a man with a channel that also had one appear in his tank and talks about it in a few of his videos. So does the Chanel "secret history living in your aquarium" his videos are pretty scientific. Very interesting

I have these in several of the tanks in my fishroom. I can't stand them. I wish I knew what caused them.

You must keep a pristine tank!! It's a good sign when you have these! They are a living thing. I believe they assist in keeping the water filtered as well. I don't know much about them. I also believe they are introduced by our water system.

  11. I have had this growing in my cooler (70°) tank for a few years. I transferred some hornwart frm that tank to my warmer (80°ish)tank. A month ago I was cleaning the sponges from my hob and noticed the growth of it inside. Today I noticed it had spawned a new one and the original has doubled in size!! Such fun watching a habitat grow! Just thought I would share what I thought was interesting.

The last pic is when I first noticed it.

    That's a good one.

Especially with all of those fish in the tank already.

@Zeaqua @nabokovfan87 Yes! I was looking at a Japanese rice fish this morn, daisy's blue and golden something rather. So, you think a big tank with a bunch of littles would be a good look? I will need to think about this. I am getting so many really interesting ideas! Thanks!

how long is the tank?  Barbs like a lot of swimming distance (lengthwise).

In terms of yellow there are some options, but I would also toss in pale green as a color that can often be pretty yellow.

Gold barbs, Albino tiger barbs, Neon Green Rasbora would seemingly all fit the theme.

My tank is 34" long 14" deep and 15" tall. I have decided to save the barbs for a larger tank. I saw an amazing set up in lansing I would love to replicate at pruess pets. I looked up the green rasbora,  what an adorable fish. I would love that with my mountain minnows in my 20. It needs a pop of color too! They would be fun in this lager tank as well. Hengali rasbora are the smallest I have in the 36. No one bothers them. I will Def put the green rasb on my list! Thank you for the interesting suggestion!!

  15. @KaijuKaijuthank you. it's a 36 gal. I have had this tank for almost 30yrs. It sat in my attic for half of that time until I got bored and started watching YouTube videos🤣 then I became a science project for our kiddos and three tanks later.....granted, one is a quarenteen tank always running. I appreciate your great suggestions. I will keep them in mind while shopping and experimenting!

  16. @KaijuI do have a list above of what I do already have in my tank. I prob won't be able to fit much more after i add my yellows unless I am replacing. I do have a few plants but would like more. I just threw in some guppy grass, a spiral Val and a spiraled crypt. Here are pics of front and ends of my tank

@Sweetpicklesyour, Dont mention it. Just here to (try to) help! I think that shrimp would be fine with you bristlenose plecos. Although give the shrimp colony hiding places like hollow wood, little stone caves, and broad plants to hide in if you do want them, if they do breed, keep an eye on those shrimplets! Those otocinclus although have a yellowy-white tint on their underside not anywhere else, but they still would look very good in my opinion and match your theme of yellow!

Awesome! I may try some shrimp!! I think sometimes the lfs owner gets annoyed at my 200 questions🤣 glad I can come here to ask!

If you end up with a pair, like what I have, you want a male and a female ideally, but if you don't plan to breed them it shouldn't be a big of deal.

I think I have a male and a female but I am not 100% sure. When I first got them both were less colored, almost white, and both had a black lateral line that is no longer visible. I think the reason they looked different when I first got them is because they were young, but it could also be because they were stressed at the fish store. The female one did have the lateral line a lot longer than the male. I am not sure of the male to female ratio if you have more than a pair, but again, it shouldn't really matter if you aren't trying to breed them.

The picture above is my fish. I think the bottom one is male and the top one female. At one point my male got breeding coloration, which looks like this:

    image.png.6119b006d99d6627ee8aab92f3715a5a.png

This image below is a dwarf gourami but especially the pointed vs rounded fin applies to the honey gourami. I'd like to say that I was able to tell the gender at the fish store but I think I just got lucky because it's really hard when they are young.

    image.png.de3bd6a9e58d433f33c6a6e2eabe2200.png

As for some being white, there are 3 main different types of honey gourami:

Gold Honey Gourami: The yellow kind and most common and the one I have.

Sunset/Red Honey Gourami: These guys look similar to the gold but more red. Be careful because Sunset Thicklip Gourami are commonly mislabeled as Sunset Honey Gourami.

Wild Type Honey Gourami: Never seen these guys but I think they are lighter colored and retain the stripe for longer.

Thank you for this info! That's very helpful. Your gourami are beautiful. I like that they both are very yellow. 2 of my lfs keep trying to sell me white fish with yellow tips on them. Like a tetra or some other fish and I am like, I want a YELLOW fish! 🤪 not a white fish with yellow.

Definitely consider Honey Gourami. They are not a schooling fish but are really yellow and unlike other gourami are completely peaceful. You could do just one but they are a social fish and and a group of 2-4 would be ideal in that size tank. I keep a pair in a 20 gallon at 76-79° and at 8.0pH. The only problem I could think of is if the rams are aggressive so make sure to keep an eye on that if you do get them.

This is not my picture but mine look very similar to that at around 1.5 years old.

Wow! Those are very pretty! Thanks for the idea!

  19. @KaijuAh, thank you! I would love to add shrimp to this tank. I am afraid they would be snacks for my bristle nose and the Bolivian rams. I do already have 5 Cory's. I am strongly considering the honey gourami. Maybe 3-5 of them. I am going toncheck out the otocinclus you mentioned. I have about 4 right now. I am not sure what kind, but they are not any shade of golden. Thanks so much for your suggestions!

If I go this route, how many males to females? Also are the females yellow as well? I keep seeing white females.  Maybe those are a different type of honey?

These have been on my list forever!! I mail ordered a half dozen and they all died😔 I reordered and the same thing happened. So I gave up. Now they are so much more expensive.  I do love nano fish in a large tank! Thanks for reminding me of my first love!

    Hello,

You can also check gold white cloud minnows. My friend @beastie  has gorgeous ones. Sad thing is, I couldnt find any that look as good as hers. Everytime I find a good stock they always had black dots here and there and none were that clear gold.

    Check her journal!

    - Gold barbs are way too active and grow a bit big. If you are okay with barbs and their high activity level and size, you can also check rosy barbs. Males are orangey but females remain in gold tones. All those orange pics you see online are the males. This also gives you two different colors in one school.

    image.png.100536b8e4d2842dd422232d57e3b68b.png

Another option is gold laser cories if you don't exactly want mid column schoolers

    image.png.4c21149e96a16708d009f25fb0811c96.png

You can also check yellow mollies. They are the fish that shows the best yellow irl I have seen so far. Not exactly a "schooling" fish, but they like to be in groups anyway yknow.

    image.png.99565b03a0dc2593188d505abf8fad87.png

I do have mountain minnows in my 20 gal but not the yellow ones. That tank is about 5° cooler. I really enjoy mine. As for the barbs, I had not thought of female rosy barbs. I will look into that! Thank you. That Molly is very pretty too! Thank you so much for the suggestions!

  23. I have been wanting bright yellow in my tank! Preferably a yellow school. I could settle for one or 2 larger non schooling as well.

    I have;

    1 super red pleco

    4 boliv rams
    5 peppered Cory
    5 lamchop (het) rasbora
    7 danio- (2 pearl, 4 longfin leopard)
    4 otocinclus
    1 platy
    2 Panda Gara

numerous mystery snails (going in for trade soon)

(2 orange and blk calico platty in qt to go in soon)

    tank is 36 gal, 78° , ph 7.6

Any suggestions? I have wracked my brain and done research and havent come up with anything but gold barbs. I have a planted tank and want to keep it nice.
