  1. Hi Fish Nerms!

This is a true Nermy question.  I want to create an aquarium waste water reuse/collection system.  I hate waste of water and and want to maximize fish poo for plants so I would like the collective experience of fellow Nerms on this issue.  If you have a system that pumps Waste RO or water changes outside somehow please share in concept with me how you do it.  I would love to hear it.

    many thanks

  2. I have some struggling Monte Carlo plants can you help?  They have melted back or seemed to dying with little or very little new growth.  They are a month old from the coop and I have just placed a second root tab in the rock wool.  The tank had CO2 and is allowing for some pearling of other plants.  I placed the plant in the plastic in eco complete substrate in 80 degree water that has some hardness and no ammonia.  Ph is neutral as well.  The tank is a 32.5 gallon Fluval with and aquasky light set to 10 hours of varying light intensity.  Your thought are appreciated.   Tedrock.

  3. image.jpeg.22709ecf30c6e8655832e9e8dcf8b251.jpegJust wondering how many of us there are on the forum.  Give a shout out to this thread, where are you located generally, and what your current fish activity is.  Just getting a sense of who is out there.  Who knows where it will take us.

I am Ted K and I live north of Boston.  I have 20 tanks and breed guppies, rice fish, bristle-nose plecos, and shrimp.

Hope to see and hear from others!

  4. Bill And Ted Death GIFs - Get the best GIF on GIPHY

So Nerms help me with my frustration.  I came home from work to check the fish tanks and there is one of my proud platinum angel fish lying at the bottom of the tank.  He was THE male of ten fry to mature and become a pair with the only female to breed.  The odd death - he swallowed coarse sand substrate.  When I took him out of the tank his mouth was full of black sand.  He was weighed down to the bottom of the tank by a full stomach of sand.  I am not really looking for a breakdown of this incident just wondering about other odd deaths like these that I never anticipated.  Let me know what you think.

  5. First off I have never run a fish store but this sounds like a daunting job full of super responsibility in the decision making.  I imagine this forum is helpful but you really need pros for this.  It is hard to offer suggestions without without knowing the timeframe.  Also what is the image of the store, clean and refined or family style/super casual.  These factors all might affect the tanks presentations.  These are just a few of the ideas to guide the process I am thinking of right now.

    Good luck, Ted K

I have two stories - i mostly buy titanium heaters so they don't burst per sey but i had one on the 40 stop working so the tank got a bit chilly.

The worse story is i purchased a 25 watt for qt tank; I made sure it worked and heated to the correct temp then added the fishes. Next morning it got stuck off and the tank had dropped to 68 (killing my small clown loach); i checked it and it seemed to come on so left it to warm the water up and next time i checked the tank was 86. grrrrr.... returned it and put a larger 100 watt in the qt tank. piece of crap. I read the reviews but amazon lumps them with other heaters and it turned out from another site that model (at 25 watt) has an 80% failure rate grrrrrrr....

I feel your pain truly I do.

Before getting back into the hobby did the research. Saw Cory's videos on how some people do NOT need heaters! Because of stories like this and potential failures planned specifically NOT to have heaters and be low tech. I know not everyone can do it so I totally get it- but I am so glad I am one of the lucky ones not to! @Tedrock such a bummer! Sorry to hear about your loss. 😔 What a terrible thing to walk into!

I so tried the same thing going low tech it worked for the summer.  I switched to cool water fish to breed guppies, rice fish.  Yet my basement gets into the up 50's and the guppies just can't take it and breeding slows down to a crawl.  So I needed to introduce heaters again.  Still the tanks are lower than "normal" I like more resilient fish to sell to my LFS.  I just can't heat my whole basement yet.  When I build the true insulated fishroom I will cut most cords.

Bought 2 Cobalt 200 w heaters on Black Friday, placed them both in my killifish breeding tub, I reached into a tank to adjust a breeding mop and got a shock. I looked and 1 of the heaters had essentially exploded and a live wire was exposed.
Had a great deal on tetra preset heaters and bought a couple and all of them have failed luckily didn’t kill any fish.
Hopefully the heaters the coop is developing will be better.
So yes heaters suck. Look forward to the day I can heat a room or use heat tape to manage temp.

The ones that failed for me have been the preset heaters as well.  I guess you get what you pay for.

Here I am ready ready for blissful sleep just a quick gaze through out the basement fishroom.  Bam. . .stop right there. The scaped 10 gallon lemon eyed long fin pleco fry grow out tank has no action.  Where are all the pre teen pleco fry?  Feel the water. . . wooo that water is cold.   Check the heater aghh, just put this in two days ago, piece of garbage.  The agony, the loss of life, months of work poof gone.

I saved the hardiest but not before losing 80%.  Funny thing is up till a week ago I had two 25 watt heaters in the 10 gallon.  I just switched to a 50 watt two days ago.  Two heater in a special tank like this from now on.

So what is your heater story?   Please I can't be the only one.

    Many thanks

  9. I am no expert, but I just went through the same thing, it sure looks like ick to me.  There are two types of Ick I hear.  Regular ole ick and stress ick.  Stress ick is caused when the conditions in the tank make the fish “nervous” and they develop ick symptoms.  So if tank conditions are normal and the tank in established it seems to be ole regular ick.  I hope this info help.

  10. Howdy Nerms!

So my Rams have ick and I have treated them with ick X.  How many cycles do I give the tank?  Sure the fish look better after one day but after this first cycle do I stop there or do another cycle?  Please share your thoughts.

    many thanks,

  11. There is a way to breed shrimp and guppies together.  You need a mass of Java moss in tank that is large and dense. So dense that the guppies can’t penetrate into it.  This way baby shrimplets have cover and grow to be bigger than mouth size.  So start with shrimp first with moss then after the colony is thriving introduce the guppies.  The colony will continue with the dense moss mass. While not a shrimp factory it will be a sustainable colony.  Hope this strategy is helpful.

  12. Does anyone struggle with auto feeders?  I know I do.  Trying to find the right food for the fish is a problem.  Then avoiding the food dump.  I had a huge spill today I don’t know if my kids opened the door notches or what.  I ripped that feeder off that tank. Then I began a huge vacuum project.

I guess you need to ask yourself why you have a feeder?  It was so my fish could get several small meals a day rather than once a day by hand.  Well at least that is what I told myself.

    What are your thoughts?

    Many thanks
