In my experience, plastic tubs are quite strong. A little bowing won't hurt it. It does depend on the quality, I don't trust tubs from the super budget stores that look like they'll break when you look at them.

Thanks for this. I am thinking it should be fine but thought I should ask for other people's experience incase I accidentally have a major issue ahah

  2. Thanks for this

That looks like it's injured it's self could have swim in to something in the tank or could have been attack by one of the other rams it colour looks a bit dull I would separate her for a while and see have she does

I think you could be right here. Do I done with an anti fungal or just monitor?

  3. Hey all, I’ve been meaning to ask a question about one of my rams in the trio I have in a community 4ft planted tank.

I have 2 who are dominant, have bold colours and territories within the tank that they spar over. I have another who I suspect may be a female, as there is little aggression from the other 2 towards this fish.

Firstly, are there any good ways to sex rams?

secondly, it has a pinkish tummy so I’m wondering if that’s got anything to do with anything.

thirdly, I’ve noticed a bit of a spot on its head. It doesn’t look like ich but I’m not sure what it is,does anyone have any guesses? I freaked when something like his happened to my beta but it was just colour development in the scales so I’m guessing it could be this but I’m pretty new to the hobby so any advice would be appreciated :))

I tried to take a photo where you can see it.

  4. Hey crew, I hope everyone is doing really well.

About 2 weeks ago I bought a few tetras rather spontaneously and didn’t have a quarantine tank so I bought this plastic tub from Bunnings (An Australian hardware store). It’s not too rigid and is 50L - although I haven’t been filing it completely.

should I be worried about the set up spontaneously combusting?? There is some bowing of the plastic but it’s doing quite well and I haven’t noticed any cracks or anything like that.

Im slightly worried it will burst or something but don’t know if this is just an irrational fear - so advice and experience would be greatly appreciated.

Also I pulled a spawn from a bristlenose fair i have in a community tank who have been breeding in the driftwood but I’ve only just given them a cave. I have another bristlenose breeding project on the go but can’t see I to the cave and let them colony breed - so the babies stay in (I have multiple spawns in that tank. It’s pretty incredible to see how many babies there are. Even though I’ve got a tank teeming with them seeing the bucket full of fry is pretty crazy :))

PS. I hope no one has a breakdown over the rainbow gravel - I had it lying around after a 2nd hand tank purchase and wanted something ASAP so it got the call up haha

Hey, I believe these black spots are egg shells.

Also, question leading from discussions above, will a colder temperature mean that the eggs do not hatch, or just that they will take longer to hatch. Cheers

  6. So the eggs seem to the falling and collecting at the bottom, does this mean that they haven’t hatched??

Ive let the bottle settle and the waters almost clear now with all the eggs in the cap 😕

  7. Alrighty crew,

Ive just changed from the ocean nutrition brine shrimp eggs mixed with salt to the ones not mixed with salt. Ive also scaled up my operation to hatch out a lot more BBS.

BUT, my issue is that I dont feel as though the shells are separating very well from the BBS. Im wondering if anyone else has had similar issues and how they overcame them.

    Cheers!

  8. The little babies got their first meal of BBS today.

Unfortunately, due to me spilling a completed batch of bbs the day before they were off their yolks (GRRRRR), they had to wait a day before getting on the bbs, eating a powder instead. I notices SUCH a difference with feeding the BBS though they LOVED it!

My sieve came in the mail today so I'm very excited to be churning out BBS and feeding to my babies :))

PS. Excuse the reflections in the photo ://191555835_2627898227510820_8220262515370720388_n.jpg.84e87d67717239ed192236bed2b50dbf.jpg

My guess is that the light  makes them see potential predators a bit better. They can probably sense movement in the water but I'm guessing the light gives them a chance to react faster. My tank has a lot of potential predators with tetra and loaches. Fishes have fairly good vision - just hold your hand up and move it from right to left when outside the tank.

    -

This is my tank and you can see some of the potential predators but hte loaches like to hide during the day and there are a lot of loaches in this tank:

WOW i LOVE your tank! That is serious so gorgeous! I love how dense it is, your fish must thrive

We prepared a series of video journal entries for our Fish Club to submit for BAP - breeding Koi Angelfish (Pterophyllum scalare). If you're new to breeding angelfish, and want to watch a process that has worked for someone, these videos may be helpful. Let us know if you're successful raising up Angelfish this way!

SO COOL to watch this progress, will be great inspiration for my project 🙂

There is little chance of the parents guarding once the frys become free swimming ( a few days after wriggler) so if you want to raise them you need to either isolate the parents or take them while wrigglers and raise them yourself. I have parents in a large community tank that can routinely get them to free swimming but can't keep up with them after that. Also it helps them a lot if you leave the light on in the room. It doesn't need to be bright just not pitch black.

Ah, I havent heard about having light on for them? Whats the rationale behind that?

Yeah, I think it would be so cool to have the parents raise the fry all by themselves, but I think it could only really feasibly be done if they were in a tank by themselves. Maybe Ill give it a crack one day.

you can find video's online delving into guppy genetics, but there have been many chapters written about this in books over the years. in short, if you want to know about a females genetics, you really have to pick her out of a line of guppies who's traits you know.

Thanks for the response! Do you have any book recommendations?

Ok, that makes sense! So picking out a female where you know the genetic line that she's come from - makes sense!

Not a geneticist here, but would really love to encourage you to work through this and develop your own strains of various fish!

Before dabbling at your questions, let me strongly encourage you to reach out to Greg Sage at Select Aquatics. He is a master breeder, and gives a talk at fish clubs all around the US on selective breeding. Here is his e-mail: selectaquatics@gmail.com

Now, to at least some of your questions . . . I found this > article to be very helpful explaining phenotypes, genotypes, traits, etc at a basic level.

And for what it's worth, here's how I'd do it . . . I think you are asking about what her dominant and recessive traits are. As I understand it, phenotype is just the sum of what she looks like -- size, fin shape, coloration, etc. I think you're interested in learning what she may give off when mated. The biggest problem with Guppies is that once a female spawns the first time, she can hold milt from make guppies in her indefinitely, and influence her entire genetic line from that male. So the problem comes when buying a female guppy -- "hey I love the way that one looks!" -- she may drop fry influenced by any number of males she's already spawned with. For this reason, many serious breeders assiduously look for young guppy fry that have been raised in carefully isolated environments. One breeder we recently bought a group of female guppies said something about this in an offhand remark, "They's only been in a tank with my best males of that line." Implication being, they would not be likely to drop fry from mixed, diluted, weak lines. When you spawn a guppy pair, in theory, you'll get a genetic variation that can be basically accounted for with the old punnet square. However, because you may be looking for a number of genetic markers (phenotype distinctives), a Punnett Square may not answer all of your aims. So, the common way to practically work this through is to selectively breed a lot of guppies in single lines. So, for example, if you select 12 guppies -- 4x males that all appear to be from a single stock, and 8x females that likewise appear to be from the same stock as well -- separate these into two lines: 2x males / 4x females in one setup, and 2x males / 4x females in another setup. raise fry from both, and cull brutally for only the desired traits. Then breed those desired traits again, each in the same line. Again, cull the 3rd generation for only the desired traits. THEN, next, you _cross_ your lines, and mix the trait-specific males form one line with the females from the other. This will not solve all inbreeding problems, but it helps to keep the genetics a bit more resilient.

Here's an ingenious way to maximize your livebearer yield: https://aquaticlifefarm.com/web_pages/alf_article_save.html and also: https://aquaticlifefarm.com/web_pages/alf_article_feed.html

Wow! Thankyou so much for your comprehensive response! Ill certainly follow up on the resources that you provided :))

Yeah, you are right, I am looking for information about dominant/recessive traits. Its so interesting how they can hold milt (that's a new word for my vocabulary) - makes it a bit confusing. Is the best way to start a project, then, to try and find a breeder with very young females and then isolate from there to ensure that she breeds with the male that I want her to breed with? I guess by the time that any female is in a LFS she's probably already at breeding age.

All my research so far has emphasised culling hard - or as you say brutally. Im pretty excited for this process. It sounds like a rewarding undertaking.

Again, thanks SO MUCH for your response - youre a legend

I had At one time 5 tanks in my college dorm they had no rules about it until I was gone. I just drove my fish their and back and I would buy tanks while I was there and sell the tanks before I had to move out for the summer. I would trade up on craigslist a lot. That is how I ended up with a lot of tanks bigger tanks cheap. I think in all trading buying and selling I made 500 bucks keeping fish and selling tanks. This is a 58 gallon native tank I had

Im currently living in a dorm and have four tanks. I fought the residence provider on their terms and conditions and managed to get them to approve me having a tank haha. I think they only think I have one take though - oops.

The tank has evolved a bit while cycling. I cut the driftwood in half - was producing far too much red tannin and too quickly for my liking. I think the cycle is pretty much done now as well.

I have added a few plants from what I could get from my LFSs, and I would like to keep adding more. A couple Val and baby tears, which look quite poorly compared to the other anubias and swords and whatever the others are.

I wouldn't mind some grassly low growing stuff near the front and some more interesting medium size plants around the middle. I've already started thinking about CO2, so that will be the next thing to be researched I guess.

  16. Hey everyone, I'm setting up this thread to document and share my journey with my beautiful angelfish - Angel (f/ Silver with black bands) and Patches (m/Koi).

The story starts (accidentally) here on another thread I had asking about the fins on Angel.

Angel was gifted to me by my best friend who knows literally nothing about fish I'd had her for about 8 mnths before I confirmed she was a female, when she lay eggs! My girlfriend and I were SO surprised and excited! As detailed on the other thread we found her a boyfriend and the rest is history.

We've had 5 spawns so far in the 4ft community tank:

    1. Eggs eaten by fish

    2. Eggs eaten by fish/falling do to flow

    3. developed to wriggler stage but were eaten

    4. developed to fry but we were away to the weekend and came back to no fry

Spawn five is the current project. With a Covid Lockdown in Melbourne Australia, my girlfriend and I headed back to her family house, however, couldnt bare to neglect another spawn. Whilst the spawn was not completely off their egg sacks we pulled most but not all from the 4ft and took them with us. Its been so cool to watch them, and even over the curse of today they have developed so much. They had their first meal today (a powder, cant remember what brand) and the BBS are on their way, cant wait to see them smash their first BBS meal tomorrow.

My girlfriend and I are so stoked and really really loving the breeding project :))

Hope youre all doing well - pictures and updates to come
