It's funny you should say that because I am going to try and put shrimp in. I don't know if I'll be sending them to their death with the Gourmies. It well be very heavily planted on the filter side.

That should provide enough cover for them to establish and maintain a colony, and you should see some adults out and about grazing.  You aren't likely to see many juveniles in a tank with fish.

I can make balloon animals. Not sure this counts as a talent, but it's something that most folks who know me would not suspect.

The backstory is that when I was a teenager I found out my mother could juggle. I was surprised that she had kept that under wraps throughout my childhood and was impressed that she had this playful aspect. When I became a mom, I thought I should also have a playful secret talent, so I learned to make balloon animals.

As a bonus, it was a living example of something I teach in my work, exposure therapy: As a child I was terrified of balloons because I hated the unpredictable loud noise of them popping, and then I hated being teased for being so bothered by it. Well, you pop a LOT of balloons learning to make balloon animals. So, through steady exposure that was voluntary, I became desensitized to it and now I could actually pop balloons for fun 🙂 Double win!

My wife can also.  She worked as a clown for about 20 years (children's birthday parties, store openings, etc, not circus).  She's an incredible face painter also.

Well I'm sure it would be a mixture of things.. though I have only ever had leaks (and what would likely lead to a burst) when the tank was not level. When it is unlevel it puts too much pressure on one side and it starts a slow leak.

I would like to clarify something.  Placing a tank on a surface that isn't level doesn't cause them to break (at least not the moderate amount of lean likely to be found in a house).  If it did most of mine would be leaking.

Placing the tank on a surface that isn't flat can cause a tank to break.

  4. Hello,

I'm sorry you've lost some berried females, but I wouldn't assume that the young shrimp all died.  If they were released before the mother died there's a good chance they're in the tank but hiding.  That's very common with young shrimp, especially if there are fish in the tank (I don't know if that's the case with your tank or not).

Now, to answer your other questions, no, I don't think a single female with multiple males will affect her ability to carry the eggs.  For the second part, I'm not enough of a geneticist to give a definitive answer, but adding more females would certainly be a good idea, though you likely don't need to be in a big hurry with it.

I agree with above. However If you are super lazy or just always wondering and have time you can wick water out. Put some cotton twine and hang it out of the tank the tank and the other in a bucket. It will slowly wick water from the tank. It is slow and not very efficient but works. I’m I not sure how much you have but Lowe’s has 1/2 10 ft tubbing for about $6 dollar to use as a siphon and 1/4 inch 10ft for $4. Often times you can find damaged or returns items and ask for a discount. I use this cheap tubing for mine.

I recommend getting some of that hose even if you do have an off-the-shelf siphon with the tube.  I've done that with all of mine.  I keep the tube and throw everything else away, including the bulb you use to start the siphon.  You don't need it anyway.  I start the siphon by lowering the tube into the water, then slowly bring it up, with the open end slightly higher than the end with the hose.  As soon as water starts flowing I lower it back down into the water, still keeping the open end elevated.  It doesn't always work on the first try, but it works.

Anyway, I went to the local hardware store and bought 30' of hose for my large siphon.  I run it outside for draining water from the 65, and to the shower drain for the 40.  I use a smaller tube on the smaller tanks that I drain into my 2.5 gallon white bucket.  That one has about 6' of hose, which is enough that I can set the bucket on the floor.

My one tank that has Nerite snails in it have been littered with their eggs but based on what I have read they will not hatch etc because they need brackish water.  But I for some reason have a new Nerite in my tank.  Not sure if more but there is a little one. Any thoughts? Has anyone else have this luck?

I had a horned nerite snail show up in my 40 gallon tank some months ago (and it is definitely a nerite snail, unless there are other snails that look just like them).  There are other nerite snails in the tank, but they look nothing like the new one.  I have no explanation for how it got there.

  7. All of my tanks are at least moderately planted, and none of them have special high dollar substrate.  They have either pool filter sand or Black Diamond sandblasting sand, depending on which color I wanted.  Plants grow just fine, with or without root tabs.

The last two I set up, and probably all of them moving forward, have an inch or so of dry cow manure on the bottom, and then 2" of sand on top to hold it down.  That seems to be working well (and I have cows, so the manure was free).

That's helpful re: the angelfish...thanks! If I went with the pearls, what's the minimum school size to prevent any aggression? I'd like to pair whatever show fish with either a massive school of something, or two larger schools for some variety.

I can't make any promises, but I'd suggest at least five, and try to not get more than two of those males.  I know it can be difficult to sex them when they're young.

I've always wanted to keep angels, but not sure how many I can realistically fit without overdoing the bioload. Maybe 3x angelfish, a handful of cherry barbs, and maybe a large school of tetras?

I've only kept angelfish as singles, but it's my understanding (from many sources) that with multiples bioload isn't the issue, it's behavior.  If two of them pair up they will likely terrorize the other(s).  I'd suggest just one.

If you want a group as a centerpiece instead of a single fish I can't recommend pearl gouramis highly enough.  I have eleven of them in a 40 gallon breeder and am very happy with them.  Rainbowfish would be another option.  I have ten turquoise rainbows in my 65 gallon tank and like them very much also.

  10. Several people have mentioned Aquabid.  I've been to that site a number of times but never used it.  I went there earlier today and found a listing I'm very interested in, so I registered.  I'm waiting for the confirmation email with my password before I can proceed.

In the meantime I have a question I'm hoping someone can answer.  I can't find anything about shipping costs on this particular listing, though I've seen it on others.  Will that information be available if I choose "Buy it now", or do I need to ask the seller first?

I know @Cory thinks that sorority tanks are just an accident waiting to happen (correct me if im wrong) but it sounds like you have stressed/ low quality bettas, where did you get them from, can we get some photos of the tank and water parameters, stocking and tank size?

If you really are having trouble you could just buy a lot of 5 gallons/ other smaller tanks and split the sorority up

You're not wrong.  I saw one of his videos where he said he'd never seen one work long-term.  I've also seen him say that most fish can handle one stressor, but not two, which could explain the health issues going on here.  If the fish are already stressed because of the other bettas it makes them more susceptible to disease and parasites.

    • I doubt if there's enough difference between the two to matter.
    • I occasionally feed vegetables to my shrimp.  I just boil them for a few minutes so they'll sink, but it's probably not necessary.
    • Just as a heads-up, some otos will eat vegetables and commercial fish food, and some won't.  You could experiment with various vegetable varieties to see if they seem to prefer one or the other.
    • Also, while corys are bottom feeders, they do best with protein as a significant portion of their diet.  So while they will likely eat the vegetables it shouldn't be their primary diet (not algae wafers either).

Love the contrasting colors between the crypts! I also love how the ones to the left are standing up and the one to the right said I’m just gonna lay down here on the substrate haha looks awesome

I'm glad you like it.  I'm a little surprised to get that deep color.  The tank has a plain vanilla inexpensive LED light and no injected CO2.
