  1. Despite how this post makes me look I have been keeping fish for 3. Years which I know still makes me pretty new but I'm not a complete beginner. I hate having the pressure of making all these decisions about my pets all on my shoulders so I turn to forums alot even if I already have a pretty good idea what to do This sorority tank thing was definitely a mistake. But I spent months learning everything I could about them and planned everything out so carefully. But it wasn't until recently I started seeing information about the downsides of this kind of tank. It's so easy to look at biased information online, and I'm really trying to get better about that.
  2. This is the plan, I have a few places in mind to take the fish. And I plan to keep one as a centerpiece. I'm grateful for the time my sorority tank was successful, but I will never try again
  3. I think my fish are definitely low quality, I got them all from Petco. I definitely agree that sorority tanks are very fiddly and it rely heavily on the personality of the girls you have in there. I think that these girls just aren't compatible, They aren't fighting much or anything, so it's kind of hard to decide what's going on. Ammonia and nitrite 0 nitrate is less than 5, It's a 55 gallon with about 25 fish in it including 9 females. Only 2 of them seem to be stressed, including the sick 1. The rest seem to be doing really well and all of my dither fish are very healthy. I think I just might start euthanizing the sick ones until I don't have anymore. But I'm trying to decide if that's a terrible thing to do, I don't have room for anymore tanks and I really do want this tank to be a community tank.
  4. I know a sorority tank is a very advanced tank, but I have successfully balanced and maintained one before. My problem right now is I lost most of my fish 6 months ago and I haven't been able to rebalance things. My tank is cycled but I'm talking about the relationships between my fish. My girls are always stressed or sick and I can't just keep endlessly treating them. I have too many healthy girls to just euthanize them and start over. I can't keep doing this is too much for me. Right now one of my girls has body flukes, but it's always something. I'm so tired of always having sick fish, I've really can't do this anymore. Please what should I do I'm done with a sorority tank, this go round just isn't working for me. But I don't know what to do with all of my healthy fish, only one girl is sick right now and the rest are doing fine. But I know it's only a matter of time before something else goes wrong Is it terrible for me to just euthanize them when they get sick
  5. I found them!! There's a website selling them and they call them betta scoops here's a picture! I'm so excited I've been looking for days!
  6. Not the best title, because I have no idea what this thing is actually called. But one time I saw a video of a betta breeder taking pictures of they're fish. And to get their fish out of the tank they used what looked like a normal fish but instead of the net part it was thin plastic like a ziplock bag. So it scooped the fish out and some water so it wasn't stressful. I would really like to know what this thing is called so that I can find one. I usually use my hands so it's not as stressful, but that doesn't work as well in every situation
  7. Excess iron can lead to algae overgrowth. Hair algae especially, it's a nightmare 🥲. But it depends on the tank. Here's a blog post about Iron levels and using it in a planted tank. You can buy iron tests as well, they're relatively cheap. https://www.aquariumcoop.com/blogs/aquarium/iron-fertilizer
  8. I'm 99% sure that my goldfish have flukes, Gill and body. They're flashing and gasping at the surface occasionally. I already treated with paracleanse, but that didn't work. From what I've read I didn't treat from long enough to kill the new hatch of flukes. My prazipro should be getting here today or tomorrow. My plan for using it is to dose once and let it sit for a week and do that 3 times. My question is should I do a water change in between doses without replacing the amount that I changed. Or when I do a water change should I replace the amount I took out and then redose?
  9. Marble/koi bettas change color over time, it is totally normal and often a good sign. Especially with the white spot being the same texture as the rest of his fin I think you're in the clear.
  10. Ich can sometimes take 8 weeks to show white spots from what I've heard. It still could have been the sword tails, I've had new fish take 3 weeks before spreading ich. Good luck, ich is so annoying to treat!
  11. I don't think my frogs gonna make it. Hes in really rough shape I think I have incorrect water parameters, because I recently changed them. But not recent enough for this to be shock, I acclamated very well. But anyway my plants, I just choose really Hardy ones. And then I use Seachem flourish fertilizer about once a week. I also use straws to section off my water , so that there is no surface disturbance.
  12. I think I figured out the problem, the aquarium hes in use to have really hard water. But it doesn't have anymore. I've found a few places that African dwarf frogs can start to blot after a while of being in water that's too soft. I don't have a way to fix this for him and hes in really rough shape, I don't think that hes savable. I'm way more sad than I've ever been to lose a fish. But I just don't have the right water parameters for him anymore and I don't have room for another tank. Probably doesn't matter at this point, but I feed a mix of fresh frozen food, freeze dried blood worms, and occasionally bug bites community pellets
  13. Today is the 1st time I've gotten a good look at him in a while. He's still eating but he does look a little bloated. His back is out of the water and struggles to get below the surface. I know something is wrong what am I supposed to do about it I want to save him
  14. Thank you, I'll check that out! I'm worried, because every post I see about this the frog dies 🥲
  15. Here a picture i just got, i shoed him back in I just attached a picture, I have a tightly fitted glass lid so there little chance of getting out. The plants are floating but he has plenty of support and space
  16. I've had this frog for almost a year, it's in a 55 gallon community tank. I make sure that he gets plenty of food, and nobody picks on him. I have a lot of Asian water moss and other floating plants, And 3 times now I have caught him completely out of the water sitting on the plants like a normal frog. Is this OK? Is it a sign something's wrong? Or is he just weird? Ammonia and Nitrites are 0, Nitrates <5 Sorry I've been posting so much I don't have a local fish store to ask things and I don't know anyone else in the aquarium hobby
  17. That's good to hear, I'll give it a shot without any modifications. If that doesn't work I'll use an airline tubing ring
  18. I've had my 55 gallon aquarium for about 2 years, and it still has the filter it came with. I'm really wanting to update it, it's been making a weird sound for a while and I can't find replacement parts. This tank is a betta sorority, so I want a low flow option. I'm considering switching to a sponge filter since I don't use filter cartridges anyway. I'm open to other ideas, but they're supposed to be great for bettas and I love how cheap they are. My only concern is that the bubbles will disrupt the surface of the water too much for my floating plants. Right now i have little to no surface movement, and my plants are thriving. I have Asian water moss, velvet water spangles, frog bit, giant duckweed, and red root floaters. My current set up is an adjustable flow hang on back filter that's turned to its lowest setting. It doesn't disturb the surface of the water very much, But I have a divider on the surface of the water to prevent my plants from getting pushed down. I have about 13" on the surface that is not covered in plants.
  19. In my experience the babies get eaten quicker than they can breed. I started with 2 and ended up with 6 after about 8 months. I had them with a betta sorority and African Dwarf Frogs which all eat snails, so keep that in mind
  20. Japanese trapdoor snails burrow and eat a tone of algae. They're not much to look at, but they're pretty cheap.
  21. I ended up finding ich X so I'm using the aquarium co op method of treating fungal infections. If they are still itchy after that I'll use paracleanse
  22. That's a good move. The salt will most likely work for external parasites aswell right? Based on the other fish in the store I'm thinking flukes.
  23. pH. 7.6 Nitrates. ~5 Hardness. City water report says we have relatively soft water Nitrite. 0 Ammonia. 0 Water Temperature. 73 I got 2 goldfish from petco 2 days ago, one fantail and one oranda. The oranda has a white fuzzy growth on the front of his dorsal fin. It comes off fairly easily but grows back. The oranda also frequently rubs himself against the glass but only by the filter so maybe he's just playing in the current? I'm sure that's just wishful thinking. The fantail maybe rubs himself on the rocks but he could just be trying to get food fron under them. With him it's honestly hard to tell. I have paracleanse, and I was thinking about using that for a possible external parasites. But I'm wondering if I can use that with maracyn oxy? because I definitely think my oranda has a fungal infection. I might just use salt instead, I can't decide. The only medications that I have access to today is maracyn oxy, paracleanse, regular maracyn, and salt. Anything else will take 2-3 days to get here. Any advice welcome!
