  1. Ooohh…. @PerceptivePesce- You got a discus sticker? Turning green with envy over here! 💚
  2. When I upgraded from a 30 to a 45 last year I asked for an UGF at the local shop, and got scoffed at by the owner. So I pulled the plate out of the 30 and Putin it in the 45. It covers roughly 2/3 of the bottom, and I have a HOB as well. It’s heavily planted and the plants are doing great. I’ve only ever used UGFs - all the replaceable filter cartridges and accoutrements for HOBs and canisters are such a racket.
  3. Well, since the lfs is selling root tabs for $1 each, (yep, one dollar a piece!) I’m taking the plunge on EZ Root Tabs, and having a thumb tack at the ready!
  4. Same here - they got broccoli last night, zucchini the night before, and red pepper the night before that. Starting to think they eat better than I do!
  5. I can only imagine how unwieldy three foot long tweezers would be!!! 😂
  6. I don’t have any qualms about about burying them by hand - I would imagine that the tweezers are hard to get a grip with. I actually wondered about poking a hole in them with a pin, but what a pain! LOL
  7. I was reading the reviews for the EZ Root Tabs, and noticed that some reviews mentioned having a problem keeping them in place under the substrate because they float to the surface. I’m curious, how much of a problem is that, really? And, how do you manage to keep them from floating? Thought I’d ask before I spring for a large container of them and possibly spare myself the frustration.
  8. Just wanted to throw an update out - cappuccino snail is back to cruising the tank normally. No idea what it was doing, laying low for so long - lol!
  9. Ammonia - 0, nitrite - 0, and nitrate - 10ish. I know it’s not dead, because at the moment it’s stuck on the front glass and I can see it’s mouth moving. It’s just the weirdest darn thing! This is the first time I’ve seen it on the glass in probably two weeks.
  10. I’ve had a large cappuccino snail for a few month’s. Until the last couple of weeks he’s (she? it?) been very active and it’s been a nightly game of where’s Waldo. Suddenly, a couple of weeks ago, it slowed down- a lot! It’s gone to or three days without moving, to the point where I’m about to fish it out, thinking it died, but when I go to do it, it’s moved to a new location in the tank. Do they have dormant periods? Suddenly last night, it moved the most it’s moved in days, but today it hasn’t moved at all. Any thoughts?
  11. YUP! And I feel so much better that it wasn’t just me…
  12. DO IT!!!! (Yeah, I know, I am not the voice of reason.). I have an empty 10 that I’m just itching to set up, once I decide what’s going to go in it, and that’s going to run on nothing but an UGF.
  13. Ditto! I’ve kept fish for decades running nothing but an UGF. If I thought I was overstocked, I’d add a HOB for additional capacity. Unfortunately, they’ve fallen out of favor, and in my opinion HOBs with all the replaceable cartridges are both a money grab and a set up to fail for unsuspecting hobbyists who believe they have to replace the cartridges monthly. When I upgraded my 30 to the 45H, the owner of the lfs actually scoffed at me when I said I wanted an UGF for it, and he didn’t have any in the shop. Not to be deterred, I pulled the UGF out of the 30, and it covers 2/3 of the bottoms of the 45H. I added a HOB to offset the difference. The lfs guy thinks I’m crazy, but whatever. I felt slightly vindicated when I was in there last week and he had some UGFs in stock for smaller tanks.
  14. Nothing like a water change to make you go ‘Aaaaahhhhh….’
  15. I’m leaving it long. Whenever I’ve trimmed it in the past, the leaves die back and are pretty unsightly. And the tank is tall, so leaving it long kind of gives the tank a ‘ceiling’, if you will.
  16. Thank you! The 20L is the in person that’s a struggle. The Finnex Stingray 2 light is way too bright for a tank that shallow, so put some giant duckweed in it, put two layers of tracing paper over the light and am doing a siesta during the day. It’s been about a month, and I’m going to have to back the light down from 8 hrs/day to six, because I noticed the tiniest bit of BBA starting. <insert eye roll here>. So, I’m back to tinkering with it!
  17. I should have made my husband turn the light off on the other side of the room!
  18. I’m old school, got an under gravel running with a HOB, and heavily planted so they’re good. Now, if I get hurt catch the remaining two candy cane tetras in the 20L and get them moved over with their friends…
  19. I was afraid, but am pleasantly surprised - and relieved the fish police aren’t going to come knocking on my door! 43 fish in a 45 high. *Disclaimer- the white skirt tetras and tiger barbs are holdovers from a previous tank, trying to keep them happy until the day comes when they age out. Warning: Tiger Barb is too aggressive to co-exist with Von Rio Tetra. Warning: Horned Nerite Snail may become food for Tiger Barb. Warning: At least 5 x Lemon Tetra are recommended in a group. 20. @nabokovfan87- that’s both hilarious and ingenious! I’m sad I’m not going to get to make my fortune by inventing something like that!
  21. Hhhhhmmmmm……How about an easy way to catch a fish so you can move it to a different tank - without making a disaster out of the tank you’re trying to get it out of?
