  1. From my local shop I bought a nano fluval heater! I've used this exact model in my shrimp tank and dont have any problems so i figured i would buy it again.

From a local online shop thats located in Winnipeg (same city as me!) I purchased some plants for a new r imless 5 gallon. They are a small buisness that a local hobbyist in ourclub runs in his basement. I've been supporting this buisness for the past year + and have loved every purchase I receive. I love supporting local business, especially those with aquariums or fish.

I missed it because I didn't get a text alert. I think I'm only getting alerts for general streams, and not the members only ones 🙁

After a few months the text alerts stopped working with me.

  3. I've recentley purchased a new rimless 5 gallon. The plan is to put a betta in this tank.

I have some plant trimings from other tanks being incorperated in this scape:

Some Bacopa, and Anubias pictured. Also trimming some Cryptacoryne Undaltus Red, and Alteranthera Reineckii Green (man, thats a hard plant to spell).

Im ordering some plants for this scape too. My limit was $40 for plants - which is the cheapest ive gone on plants when i scape a tank.

For hardscape I was a little inspired by MD Fish Tanks "Shrimp Playground Build". I liked the basic hardscape and the plants in the background so thats exactly what Im going for. I wanna do some cholla wood.

For lighting I've orderd the Hygger Nano Clip on. Originally I wanted to go with a Fluval 3.0 Nano. However it simply wasnt in the budget. I currently have one and its amazing, I love every aspect of it... except for the price. If the fluavl 3.0 is within your budget its totally worth it. I'm considering getting one for this tank in a little bit. Maybe if I can find one on sale at my LFS or somewhere.

For substrate im doing the Caribsea EcoComplete Black. I've used the fluval stratum and have loved the results ive gotten from using it. Its just so dang messy. So I wanna try a new inert substrate that from what I've heard isn't nearly as messy as stratum.

I'm trying my best in this build to order from small buisness' as much as possible, and most importantly not order from amazon. Anything my LFS was selling that I needed in this build I was gonna buy from there no matter the price difference. The light and cholla wood were the only things I bought off amazon simply because I couldnt find any anywhere else that shipped to canada.

The Plants I ordered off a small online local buisness that I love supporting in Winnipeg. They have a great plant selection, and price. Some of the plants they sell they grow in their basement so they are able to offer a cheaper price then most online sellers. Because they are in Winnipeg (where I live too) I am able to do "Free Local Pickup" or a $10 deliverer fee.

Excited for you!  Quick question, is the price on that Hygger LED right?  I use Hygger pretty much exclusively due to the quality vs. price point and a small LED like that is very high-priced for that brand.  I would expect something in the 18 to 24 dollar range for Hygger.

It's about $30usd ($38cad) on Amazon.com but $70cad($50usd) on Amazon.ca. I'm from Canada so I will be ordering from Amazon.ca so I don't have to worry about duty fees.

  6. I purchased this new 5 gallon aquarium which sits perfectely on my bedside table!

Heres what I'm thinking for the setup:

    • Pre-Cycled Spongefilter
    • Fluval P Series Heater
    • CaribSea Eco-Complete Black
    • Hygger 24/7 Clip on

I want to use  lots of plants trimming from other aquariums in this tank.

    • Bacopa Trimmings
    • Cyptocoryne Undulatus Red  Trimmings
    • Amazon Frogbit Trimmings
    • Anubias Nanna Petitte
    • Alteranthera Reineckii Green Trimmings
    • Alteranthera Reineckii Minni
      • Thoughts about keeping this plant? anyt tips? a little nervous to try.
    • Staurygne Repens

For hardscape some cholla wood. I was inspired by MD Fishtanks "Shrimp Playground" build with his cholla wood use.

I wanna put a betta in this tank.

Hi no he has always been like this. He did get himself stuck under my filter i have a bio orb tank. He damaged a few scales on his head but i gave him some stress cost and some metafix and they have healed.

He is fine in him self, just want to make sure he's OK

    Thanks 🐠

If hes been like this since day one i wouldnt worry about it. Good Luck!

I would say a 3, 5, and 10 is too small for a "breeding colony" especially if you're trying to let it get pretty big. The Betta may predate pretty heavily on the colony as well and might end up going after bigger and bigger shrimp over time. Essentially, depending on the personality of the Betta, it might gravitate towards bothering the shrimp because that's the biggest food source.

The plan is to have the shrimp and betta seperated for that very reason. The betta would be in one of the 5 gallons, and the shrimp in the ohter tank.

  9. So I'm currently in a little pickle. I have enough space next to my shrimp tank for either the marine land portrait 3 gallon, or the 5 gallon.

For the new tank I want to put a betta in it. Ever since the passing of my last betta, I've missed having one around.

If i get the 3 gallon I could move the shrimp that is currently in my fluval spec 5 gallon into the 3 gallon, and then put the new betta in the fluval spec.

    PROS OF A 3 GALLON:

    • Truthfully, I think the betta would look better in the 5 gallon.
    • the 3 gallon would save money. The aquarium itself is cheaper, but less plants and hardscape needed.
    • I could setup a scape thats more catered towards shrimp.

    PROS OF A 5 GALLON

    • Clearly 5 gallons is better then 3. I can afford both tanks.
    • Is 3 gallons too small for a breeding colony for shrimp?
    • I also need to move the shrimp, which could be stressful. I'm also not sure how well a newly cycled tank would do well with shrimp.

What signs would I see from having too little light ? Because I also have some green spot algae.

Yellowing leaves may be a sign of having too little light. Green spot algae if anything would mean too much light. However, I wouldnt worry about it. Your plants look great! If your plants are doing great (and they are) there isn't a need to change the nutrients.

What should it be at? The pet shop said 0 😞 it's about a year old. Fully cycled ect.

    Thanks 👍

You might be getting Nitrites and Nitrates confused. Nitrites should be at 0, however nitrates should be at 20ppm especially if you have a planted aquarium.

Have you seen your bettas fins getting more ragged looking? Or has it always been like this. If it hasnt always been like this, and over the past few weeks it could be very minor finrot.

  12. I woke up yesterday morning to my first shrimp molt. However later that afternoon, a shrimp died. This obviously could be a random shrimo death. However, I wanna make sure it doesnt have anything to do with the molt, is my gh too low?

    Water Parameters goes as follows:

Amonia 0.25ppm, I did a waterchange to remove this amonia and i think it was caused from the dead body being in the aquarium for a few hours.

    Nitrites: 0ppm

    Nitrates: 25ppm

    Gh: 75ppm

  13. I woke up today with my first shrimp molt... very exciting. However later this afternoon I saw a dead shrimp, do you think this has to do with the molt? Or could it just be a random death.

  14. For the forums one year anniversery we had forum members submit their favorite fish pictures that they took. There was some real jaw droppers for sure. Heres a thread to check them out:

Heres probably one of my favorite pictures that I've taken... I'm defentley not a photographer by any means.

  15. You said its where the light is directly above which makes me think its algae. Not a big deal and super easy fix. Just gravel vac it during your next waterchange, or get bottom dwellers for your tank to run past the substrate. Usually works for me!

Currently I'm only feeding them the shrimp king complete foods. I'm wondering what other foods youd reccemend. I'm hatching out some brine shrimp soon, would the shrimp enjoy that? Theres a 5in1 pack for some of the shrimp king foods i might wanna try. Along with some repashy.
