Thank you for the replies @DaveO and@jwcarlson. Both these explanations had crossed my mind. I was a little afraid that it is hair algae. I've had hair algae destroy some of my plants before.

Can anyone tell me what the green fluffy stuff growing on top of the cholla wood is? It used to be pearl moss. The shrimp love picking through it.

What are these plants in the front? I got it a while ago unlabeled and it just recently started spreading all over the tank.

Zero nitrites yes. I only dosed the kanaplex for 7 days. Thanks for the info on the antibiotics. That is a great idea. I'm going to switch heaters and switch to just the sponge filter. Thanks.

My betta's fins and scales have been changing for a while. I have posted about it before here: Now they are frayed and just yesterday started turning black. When the fraying started I treated with Kanaplex in his food for one week and put one tbs salt per 3 gallons in his water. It just got worse. I put catappa leaves and one tablespoon of salt per 2 gallons in his water and observed for a week to give him a rest from medication. I noticed his scales started looking a little translucent. I thought maybe it was a parasite like flukes so I treated with Paracleanse. He did start moving around more so I was hopeful. Unfortunately a few days later his finrot got much worse. He now had holes in his tail and the rot was much closer to his body. Two days ago I started treating the water with Seachem stress guard. Yesterday I treated with the stress guard and upped the salt to one tablespoon per gallon. Today his scales and fins are much more black. I haven't treated for fungus or used gram positive antibiotics. I'm not sure what to do now. Any advise?He seems to have a tiny red sore at the side of his mouth too. He is in a 3 gallon hospital tank with a well cycled sponge filter. Ammonia: 0 Nitrates: About 5ppm GH: 150ppm KH: 150ppm pH: 7.6

Thanks @Colu I haven't been keeping fish very long so I don't really know what to expect. He's so active for a betta I thought he was younger. I appreciate your input.

Thanks @Hally M. for your reply. I'm am relived to hear that his coloration may just be changing. He could be getting old. I have no idea how old he was when I got him last May at petco. He has always been super active, swimming back and forth all of the time non stop but recently he has been taking breaks. I feed him mostly Hikari betta bio-gold and frozen brine shrimp and blood worms at least twice a week. He has also been munching on the Hakari sinking pellets that I feed my kuhli loaches. I put him in a 3 gal quarantine tank with some salt. He seems happy. I'll just keep an eye on him for a while.

Hi all. My favorite betta has something going on with his scales and fins. His scales are either changing color to white or are covered in tiny flecks of white. His fins have started looking old and kind of pruney. He is a blue marble so at first I thought that he was just changing because of the marble gene, but recently I noticed his bottom fin has what looks like bubbles or bumps. He has always had a grey patch under his chin but it has spread and darkened and his mouth has white flecks too. He used to have a huge appetite but last month I treated the tank he was in with Paracleanse (for a stunted kuhli loach I could not catch in there). Since then his appetite has been less but he is also much slower to eat the food like he can't see it as well as he used to. I did notice some white flecks on his eyes in the pictures. I am hoping someone can tell me what could be making his fins look wrinkly and his scales to look like they are covered in white flecks. Water Parameters: pH: 7.8 Nitrates: 5 Hardness: 150 Nitrite: 0 Ammonia: 0 KH/Buffer: 50 Water Temperature: 78F I've had him since May. These pictures show how he has changed since then.

Sad to say that the little guy started pineconing today. The antibiotics were not making a difference so I started him on metroplex along with the kanaplex 4 days ago. Maybe that was a mistake. Idk. I don't think there is anything else that I can do for him.

Thank you for the replies. I will continue the kanaplex. He would not eat today. He looks slightly more bloated. I will put salt in the water and try to feed him the medicine again tonight. The sponge creates very low flow in that little of water. I don't see any pineconing on him today. Thanks again. I will update if anything changes.

Hello all. About 2 weeks ago my betta refused food for a couple days. He was in a newly cycled planted 3 gallon tank and the ammona spiked to 1 ppm (no nitrites and about 5ppm nitrates) for about 3 days in a row. I added prime and did partial water changes on those days. I offered him frozen bloodworms which he ate and I moved him to a well established tank with stable parameters. I noticed after the bloodworms he became a little bloated. In the new aquarium he found a betta leaf near the top of the tank and sat on it for increasing durations until it became all of the time. I mean he laid fins motionless with the leaf fully supporting him. He did eat a few Hikari betta pellets during the 2 days he was in that tank. I moved him to a fully cycled quarintine tank with only about one and a half gallons to keep the water level low to just above the sponge filter. At this point he was bloated and could not swim to the surface without a struggle. He sinks to the bottom of the tank. It looks like his back side is weighing him down when he swims. He can dart when he is startled. He only swims when he needs to get air at the surface, eat, or change position at the bottom of the tank. He often looks out of breath. He still likes to eat. I treated the water with erythromycin it looked like it bothered him so I changed the water after a day and did not dose again. I put a dose of Blackwater to add some tannins. I fasted him for 3 days then fed him part of a pea. I give him epsom salt baths every day 1 tsp per 4 cups for 15 mins. The last epsom salt bath seemed to stress him so I took him out early. I have fed him sparingly every other day and only freeze dried daphnia and frozen brine shrimp. I got Kanaplex and focus and put it I some frozen brine shrimp. Today is his third dose. He still just sits motionless like a little lump at the bottom of the tank. He has been repositioning himself more in the last 2 days. Sorry for the long explanation. I don't know what else I can do? Please let me know if you have any suggestions of anything else that I could try. Thank you.
