  1. I am not sure if my Black Ram has hole in the head. Here are some photos.

I have had him about 7 months. 2 weeks ago I added some of plants and crystal shrimp to the tank. No signs on my other black Rams or the other fish on the tank.

    Water Parameters:

Ph 6.6, Gh 3, Kh 7, Nitrate 10 (struggle to get over 20)  I use remineralized RO

This next photo is the partial cave he has claimed as home. Maybe he is scraping against the skate edges.

Wow! I have some subwassertang in a 2.5 gallon shrimp tank that is growing out. Hopefully one day I'll have as much as you! I have naturally high Ph (8.2 out of the tap) and have been thinking about getting some Sulawesi shrimp. Keep me posted on your journey!

What is the filter in the back of tank #3? It looks like the Ziss Bubble Filter, but has green plastic instead of yellow.

It’s just a cheap knockoff from Amazon. I chose to use it because I wanted to fill the bottom part with filter media from a previous tank to jumpstart my cycle. I feel at this point I may not be getting all I can out of it.

@ChargerstoLA, hi. I have the back wall of my 30-gallon cube set up in susswassertang. It does a pretty good job of serving as a nursery for my cherry shrimp and scuds. You might try a wall of it if, like me, you want to plant other stuff in the rest of the tank. 😊Front and side views below to show the wall:

How did you stick the mesh to the back wall?

    Amazing tank by the way.

Look at the adorable belly on that loach 🥰🤗 Appropriate name.

He used to be fatter!!! He was uncomfortable to look at. But since he trimmed down my snail population he has started losing weight.

Thanks for the tips. I think it worked. If it didn’t here is the link.

    Moss Wall

Ok epic idea. Put that huge beautiful ball on a hill just off center in the back of the big tank. Make it look somewhat like a path leading to it as it you are walking through the wood to an epic shade tree for a picnic and afternoon outdoor nap with a good book.  That moss ball is awesome.

I decided on making a giant wall of the moss, I am shocked how much was actually there. I made a new post of my journey so far.

I am in the middle of re-scaping 3 of my tanks and I thought you guys would enjoy the process. I do not know exactly how I want everything to finish. But I am open to any suggestions during this journey. I really let the tanks go once my newborn came  I finally have time, so it is time to step my game up.

Tank #1 - 6 Gallon Neocardinia I let a ton of Subwassertang take over the tank. I already took it all out. My end goal for this tank is to convert it over to a Sulawesi Shrimp tank.

Tank #2 - 50 Gallon Former discus (1 left) with Congo Tetras, long fin Black Rams, and Nessie the Blue Phantom Pleco. Redo the scape, scrap a lot of floaters.

    image.jpg.a559938008ade86f16fc38954646cada.jpg

Tank #3 30 Gallon former Bonsai with Plecos, Fatso the loach, a Golden Wonder Killi  and the shells of many eaten snails. I have no clue what I want to do with this tank. I was thinking musk turtle but I need to do a lot more research.

I took all the subwassertang and floated it into tank #3. I have a really fat Yoyo Loach (named Fatso) who eats all snails. So I want to let it hang out there so he can clear it out. Tank #2 is snail free and I hope it stays that way.

    Fatso already hunting snails:

After asking for suggestions and doing some research, I figured out what I wanted to do with all the moss I have. I decided on adding a moss wall to Tank #2.

I still want to leave it in tank #3 to clear out more snails, I found some while making the wall. I also hope that some extended time laying flat will help it to adhere better. I kept trying to figure out how I will get it to stay laying flat and close to the light. Turns out it was super easy, barely an inconvenience. It literally floats on its own. Attaching it to the back wall will be interesting now that I know it floats. Hopefully someone has some suggestions.

    Next Steps:

Tank #1 - Order Salty Shrimp and start doing water changes to get the right ph. Not sure if I am going to leave the Neocardinia in or take them out. I also have some hard scape in another tank that I want to add that is covered in Algae.

Tank #2 - I am on the hunt for the right piece of wood and place a big order for plants. The tank initially had crypts and stem plants. But Nessie decided nothing is going to stay and would uproot or eat them all. This time I am going for a lot of plants with rhizomes to attach to the wood and hard scape. Not sure if I want to leave the slate or go with different stones. Right now the pieces of slate on the right form a cave that Nessie owns.

Tank #3 — No idea. Maybe some suggestions from you guys here. Maybe musk turtle but I have zero clue what they need. So first, maybe some research time.

  8. I currently have a 6 gallon tank full of Subwassertang. I am working on a new scape in another tank and I would love to incorporate this into the new tank.

Currently, the 6 gallon has no flow and just a sponge filter. The tank I am going to has a canister filter so there is definitely some flow. Will it all stay together if I just leave it?

Anyone got some tips on an epic way to incorporate this into a new scape. I don’t know exactly what direction I want to go, so I am open to all suggestions.

I would love to. I just wonder how to get it to stay in one place and stay as one piece.

I have a 20 gallon tall tank I set up in November of last year, with a layer of dry cow manure, then a layer of potting soil, and then capped with pool filter sand.  The pH is still rock steady at 8.2.

That makes me feel confident. I plan on just taking out all the water and put RO water remineralized with salty shrimp 7.5

  10. I am looking for suggestions. Currently I have a 6 gallon tank that is full subwassertang (see photo). I got neglectful of the tank and the next thing I know it is extremely full. It also houses who knows how many neocardinia shrimp and of course some bladder snails.

First, I am looking to do something epic with the subwassertang. I am re-scaping my 50 gallon tank and I think I really could make something pop with it. Anyone got any tips or suggestion to help do this ?

Second, I plan on trying to convert the 6 gallon into a Sulawesi shrimp tank. The tank is well seasoned and the walls have algae for them to graze on (see tank was neglected). However, the substrate is potting soil with a sand cap. Do you think this is fine to leave? I worry the potting soil will lower the Ph because I will be using RO with Salty Shrimp 7.5 to get the right ph for the shrimp. I am open to suggestions and tips.

If you have another tank on hand, you could separate the two from each other. Take the presumed male out and put him in his own tank and keep the presumed female in the tank you want to keep them in long term.  This has helped me with two things: identifying “sneaker males” and allowing the female to establish herself in the tank before the male.

For the first point, when you remove the dominant male, he is no longer suppressing the less dominant fish in the tank.  So, if your presumed female is in fact female, she should start displaying female coloration naturally as she settles into the tank without the pressure of the male.  If your female is actually a male, when you remove the dominant male, the less dominant male will start to show it’s male characteristics because it no longer being suppressed by the presence of the other more dominant male.

If she is a female, she will establish her own territories within the tank, so when you do add the male back into the tank, she has the “advantage” of the tank being her territory.  I’ve found this helps balance aggression between pairs I’ve selected in the past, but this idea is also purely antidotal experience and no actual science backs this theory.

With all that being said, this does hinge on you having another tank to temporarily house the dominant male😅. But, This has been the easiest and most definitive way for me to select male and female apistos from a group without physically watching a female lay eggs or buying a big, boisterous male etc. In reality, less dominant males can suppress their male characteristics as long as there’s a more dominant male in their environment.

Hopefully this helps, or at least I’ve entertained some thought into adding another tank to your current situation!

That is a great point, I have 2 other possible tanks but I am not sure how it will go. My other tank is home to another Apisto pair, so I worry  introducing the male to that environment will cause another set of issues. My other tank is a 6 gallon with nothing but shrimp. It would become a slaughterhouse!!!

  12. Trying to confirm this is a M/F apistogramma agassizii pair. I have had them about a week the “male” has been very aggressive towards the “female”. I do have plenty of hidey holes, but I am not sure if he is just being so territorial because they are both males.

Thank you so much for the help. I came up with my own little design lol it has water flowing from the tank into a breeder box then back out and I have the leaf weighed down so there not exposed to air. I’ll keep everyone updated the following days!

That’s a great idea, just watch how much flow is going once they become free swimmers. Any plans for what you may try and feed them?

  15. TLDR on the post. Kid left the hose running to top off his parent’s pond for 2 hours. The next day all the fish were dead.

There was some interesting perspectives from different people.
Some saying it’s the chlorine. But others have said the sitting water and UV would help eliminate the chlorine. Also they said it would take longer than 1 day.

Some said the temperature difference  causing shock or sudden drop in PH.

An interesting one was about sudden water dilution on an established pond causing osmotic issues

    What do you guys think?

I also like his comment about a big water tank on the outside.

  16. If you have enough line of sight breaks and caves/hidey holes 4 rams could be done. I have 2 pairs in a 50 gallon tank I have. You could also shoot for. Trio of 2 females and 1 male. With that, a clean up crew of snails would work great. I have horned nerite and they are awesome.

Hello I have a 32.5 gallon flex tank and i'am doing research on getting an 8 figure puffer fish. The tank has been set up with freshwater for about two months and has been established. However, I'am slowly converting  to brakish water as we speak. There is 0 ammonia, 0 Nitrite, 0 Nitrate, and an ph of 8.0 throught 8.5, and tempeture around 79 degrees. My question, what is the best method of quartine of a puffer fish and what is the best medication to treat the puffer for bacterial and parasites? I would also love to know experiences on how to transition a 8 figure from fresh water to brakish water. I also have an 5 gallon quartine tank already established for little over an month. Any advice would be very helpful plz and thank you.

Sorry, I know this doesn’t fully answer your question but I have been wanting a figure 8 puffer, so I am just following to hear responses. I initially wanted a figure 8 because initial searches said they are good for freshwater only, but I have been reading conflicting information. Although a lot have said very hard water, or low end brackish. So hopefully some people here know more then I.

  18. You might be a NERM if you hear your coworker ask about where to get fish food and you get super excited to drop some knowledge. Only to realize they are talking about Ben and Jerry and mean Phish Food. However, you are still excited because you love both.

    Agree 100%.

I have a lot of fish that breed in my community tanks. Sometimes a few fry survive. Sometimes none do. It's always a pleasure to see the little guys that make it for the first time cause  they usually stay hidden and then pop out of a plant -- surprise! -- when you're least expecting it and they are big enough that they feel confident in not getting snacked upon.

Once you start setting up dedicated breeding tanks, it's a whole `nother ballgame.  This can still be enjoyable and rewarding, but it does feel a bit more like commitment and work than just letting nature take its course in the community tank scenario.

Seeing that little survivor is amazing. It’s like wow, Mother Nature does prevail.

Thank you!  Ha, yeah, my cell camera is just not fast enough.  I'd never be able to catch the fish at all with the cellphone, but turtle, on the other hand, is pretty photogenic, until he escapes and hides under the middle of the couch:D:D:D

We’ve got an escape artist. That is impressive, it would probably be the same photo of him jumping down from the tank.

ChargerstoLA I feed live baby brine shrimp twice a week every week on top of frozen brine shrimp and pellets. I can definitely tell when they have their breeding colors they both get way more vibrant the male gets a nice orange on his head not sure about red I could be slightly color blind lol he definitely has a brighter yellow to him and the black on the female gets very black and her belly is a nice pink not red either. I’m going to try the cooler water change this weekend and see if that sparks anything. They are definitely a male and female here’s a better picture to see that. The photos I posted before were when they were in the middle of their flirting so I wasn’t able to get the best photos!
