Using a pot for rooted plants in a gravel substrate. That's a cool idea, not sure why that never occurred to me to try that. How big of a pot would one need to use for something like an Amazon sword to use better soil for the pot, but still being able to use gravel everywhere else. Overtime would it choke off the plant, or make it so root bound that you wouldn't be able to get root tabs in?
See now y’all are thinking 🤔 this can be elaborated in many ways I just wanted to try some aquarium plants in my pond.

I was curious about this as I want to upgrade some plants in a large aquarium which as gravel substrate. I'm thinking using clay pots with good aquarium soil might be a solution to raising plants better suited to soil than gravel. A podcast I like "Blakes Aquatics" had a video where he does just that; I found other sites as well using pots for aquarium plants, I raise a few orchids and so have pots that are wide and have openings in the side. I'm going to give these a try in the aquarium. Also we have a small pond and grow water lilies in pots. I don't know why other plants wouldn't work as well.
Thanks very much for your input. So you’re saying there’s no reason I shouldn’t beable to take them and just put in a bigger pot then drop them down in my pond?

Hello everybody so my question today is this! When we order aquarium plants from Cory or anyone else for that matter. They usually come in those little pots with the holes my question is can they be transferred to say a bigger pot there for allowing it to keep growing bigger and healthy. Now why do I even care well I’d like to add some in my pond at least until closer to winter if it’s possible I have put pond plants in tanks but now I want to try the other way also I’m not wanting substrate in my pond hence the reason for pots

Hello welcome to this amazing hobby. You can infact do a sorority given you have a big enough tank. You said you have goldfish and bettas? Just know that one is cold water and the other is tropical the goldfish need a 75 gal at least at fully size and I personally think bettas deserve a 5 gallon per fish but you could do the 3 gal I would truly get a 10gal put your divider and call it a day . P.s a lot of people think otherwise but bettas deserve a heater and filter in there tank ❤️🐟

My first tank in the very early 1970s when I was a child was a slate bottomed 10 gallon Metacraft tank.
It was very likely a Birthday gift shortly after Mister Rogers brought a fish tank into his TV house.
It was a kit tank that included a filter, a metal lamp holder with 2 long incandescent bulbs that you had to limit use to 2 hours a day to not overheat the tank, a turquoise air pump, a box filter, a thermometer, a heater that my father did not want to pay the electricity to run, so goldfish it was….., a net, and pretty gaudy white pink and blue gravel, a lighthouse air bubbler, and three plastic plants, ph test kit, ph up and ph down, a canister of fish food, aquarium salt, And an instruction book I still have with very dubious information in it. Complete kits were a whole lot more complete back then.
after setting up the tank and giving it the three days that the book said to wait, we went to Zayres to buy the fish. A goldfish tank that makes Petcos goldfish tank look sparsely stocked. 10 goldfish for $1.00. The clerk helping us didnt want to be bothered with counting them so he took a net that would make Aquarium Co op proud and scooped up a bunch and put them in a plastic bag.
We got home and I think I remember there were over 30, and within days we started fishing out dead goldfish… It bothered me to no end…
We then went to a new local fish store that had just opened and the owner diagnosed the problem as being overpopulated. He declined to rehome the excess fish and advised that goldfish could be frozen and they would revive when thawed, so we should take out the excess and freeze them and take them out for replacements…
This created a whole lot of new stress months later when we took out a batch and they failed to revive after being thawed out for a few days….
In such a time of such miserable advice I marvel that I stayed with keeping and maintaining fish for 15 years until college.
The first time I ever heard about Ammonia, Nitrite, nitrate, cycling etc was when my son was 5 and we pulled out my old kit and restarted a tank. The original tank had already been replaced by then with a modern one due to a water leak I could not get to stop, and the light hood had been replaced with a fluorescent hood.
I would like to have an old metal framed slate bottom tank. I have fond memories.
I have thought of getting some stainless steel strips bent on a brake and polished up and siliconing them in place to replicate the look.
This was an amazing read my friend so interesting. It’s crazy the advice that was given back in those days! But im glad there was even a hobby because we wouldn’t be where we are in the hobby now days. I have five head first into research looking up videos and such joint groups on fb everything. I met a guy that has a new old stock complete kit from the 70’s it’s mind blowing. Well thanks for this knowledge I plan to restore my to a mirror finish and get it running. Not sure what fish to keep in them or how I should scape it but we will see and it will be fun doing it!

I’m in north east Indiana too where abouts you from I’m in connersville. I have collected here wild plants and drift woods etc you can keep fish as long as it’s within fishing regulations. Or not endangered. You just got to have fishing license. My favorite plant I come across is bacomba!

Hello everybody not sure if you herd about the new law there trying to pass in 2023. Limiting what fish we can keep and not keep it could be the end of the hobby how we know it HR-4521 is the law and its up to us to reach out and petition our senate and governors was wondering if @Cory would give us some thoughts!

Cost effective ways to retain heat in outdoor tubs and techniques to keep tubs from freezing solid in cold winter areas.
Curious to corys answer but askong as there is 3ft of water and a pump or form of water agitation your pond should not freeze however without heavy duty heaters your limited on what fish you can keep in those Temps 🤷♂️

In your opinion out-of the plants you have on your site what is the easiest carpeting plant to grow.
-
Seeded media in my opinion is a very awesome gift this hobby gives to us. but it's not a Magic cycle button that just poof your tanks ready to go. gonna take awhile to get processing still got to start breaking down this from that and give it a constant ammonia source throw fish Flake in there knowing its gonna just sink to the bottom and create waste do a weekly water change vs dailys with fish in cycle . Doing so it will cycle quicker than doing fish in cycle but still take a little time! Enjoy the experience 🐠🐟🐠🐟👍

Mandy rinse the tank out but I don’t think it’s wasted. Now is it toxic to the fish actually I’m not sure
