Newbie-ishfish
I have a tank of Platy fish, all seem to be doing well but I suspect they may (or some of them) have internal parasites or gill flukes? Got paracleanse for the tank. Just in case I want to treat them all but want to make sure if some of them are not infected will it be safe to treat them all? gabdewulf
Yeah, chances are if one has them, they all them and your tank bed too. Are the stomaches sunken?
Newbie-ishfish
I haven't noticed stomachs sunken necessarily, but two dont seem to be growing much. One has lighter/white gills (no fluff where it looks like fungus or anything). Ive noticed thin white/stringy poops. Also one had a light patch on the side (at first i thought maybe a scale injury so I started treating the tank with some salt) and within two days his spine was completely bent in half and couldnt swim I had to euthanize. Overall parameters are all within normal limits and stable. everyone is still acting normal and eating.

If your fish are flashing have red spots on the body over production of the slime coat reddened and inflamed gills rapid breathing then I would treat with paracleanse the symptoms the platy had that died is more likely to be a bacterial infections
Newbie-ishfish
I just didn’t think it was bacterial cause there are no outward signs and dr Google mostly found articles related to internal parasites.
gabdewulf
Thinking a bac infection too...got pictures?
Newbie-ishfish
These are the possible fish in question I suppose.
Colu
Light patch and a bent spine can be caused by a bacterial infections bent spines can happen in platys because of low KH or it can be genetic what your KH and GH @Newbie-ishfish
gabdewulf
Both their bellies don't look that bad. I think Colu might be right, Genetics or Bacterial, if anything. They look fine. 🤷♂️
Newbie-ishfish
Ok. I think I was just thrown by the sudden change/death and honestly no outward signs. According to test strips kh 40 and gh 180 (but that’s the highest my strips go to)

According to test strips kh 40 and gh 180 (but that’s the highest my strips go to) KH of 40ppm to low for platy that can cause a lot of health issues caused by the low minerals in your water you can add crushed coral to your substrate or in a media bag in your filter to raise your KH you would need to add one pound of crushed coral for 10 gallons Edited August 20 by Colu
Newbie-ishfish
Even though my ph is good? Won’t coral raise the ph as well?
Newbie-ishfish
And we don’t think the red gills or stringy poop is parasitic?
Colu
low mineral content of your water can cause flashing if your pH is below 7 that can cause Gill burn in some fish caused by the acidic water crushed coral will raise your pH as well as your KH What's your pH Edited August 20 by Colu
Newbie-ishfish
Ok. Ph is 7.5 but I ordered some coral

Newbie-ishfish
Hasn’t even been a week with the coral added to my substrate and it looks like my KH is 80 now. Fisher all doing well. On this strip pH looks more like seven than 7.5 is the only difference.
