Apisto advice

Recommended Posts

I’ve been looking to set up a new tank and have found some apistogramma that I really like the look of. I don’t have any extra setups to take care of fry. Would the fry be likely to survive in a community tank and if so what would be some options to do with the survivors? Or should I just stay away from a male female pair?

In most cases no depending on what your keeping in the aquarium. If for example you kept nocturnal active catfish they probably would eat the fry or eggs. I kept a pair of Cacatuoides with banjo catfish and fry started disappearing daily until they were gone. Tbh didn't have time to rear them myself.

Apistogramma pair despite their size will

protect eggs, wigglers, and fry intensely.

What do you have in the aquarium? How big is the aquarium?

No tank yet. I was considering a community setup with some apistogramma nijsseni in either a 29g or a 40g. Very early stages of planning

Oh that's great. I tagged a member hopefully he will chime in with his thoughts. A standard 40 gallon would be great.
