The free 55

Recommended Posts

I'm grabbing some ammonia tonight.  I want to make sure that the tank can process it and show zero ammonia and nitrite quickly before adding fish.

The following are:

  1. Reference
  2. 1ml in 5 gallons
  3. 1ml in 4 gallons
  4. 1ml in 2 gallons
  5. 2ml in 2 gallons

I went with 10ml in the 55:

Hopefully, when that gets back to zero, nitrites will also be at zero.

It's actually kind of hard to find silver dollars.  So, to start off, I got 10 buenos aires tetras, 4 otos, and 1 rubber lip pleco.

After 12 hours, it looks like we have 0 ammonia and 0 nitrite:

I've always wanted buenos aires tetras. 🙂

My lovely wife may have to live with diamond tetras as a replacement for the silver dollars. 🙂

Kind of good news 😄

People used to buy them a lot due to having sort of piranha look, without considering their adult size and needs. Let's hope same goes for fish like bala sharks, iridescent shark, red tail catfish, etc.

Yeah, I agree.  However, I still saw the bala sharks at petco and petsmart... 🙂

This may become the "Silver Fish" tank:

  • buenos aires tetras
  • red eye tetra
  • diamond tetra

Maybe round it out with black skirt and white skirt tetras?

Any other ideas for the "Silver Fish" tank? 🙂

silvertips (I know, I know, not silver), reticulated SAE, rummynose, congo tetra, bloodfin tetra, or emperor tetra.

I found this, it seems like there's a plethora of hatchetfish: https://www.practicalfishkeeping.co.uk/features/silver-belles-for-your-aquarium/

Depending on your setup and temp, maybe some silver-ish trilineatus corydoras would do well.

We went out to take a look and the wife liked the firemouth cichlids...  hmm... 😅

Actually, she really liked the little oscars, but I told her we'd probably need something like a 125 instead of or 55 for those... 😵‍💫
