Cracked frame! To worry or not to worry? That is the question.

Recommended Posts

Well, there sure isnt a lot of square inches of bonding surface is there on those areas….

and as a general rule with epoxies, the listed strength is in shear, not tensile strength. Tensile strength typically being about 1/3 of shear strength.

from the photos it looks like the tank is empty.  That makes things easier..  how old is the tank?  Do you know the brand?  Replacement frames might be available.

Bearing in mind of course that Petco is selling brand new 75 gallon tanks for $129.99 right now.

Given the amount a tank failure can cost in lost inhabitants and damage to housing, how much would you pay for insurance against that loss?

In my mind, $129.99 plus sales tax is cheap insurance…

Thank you. I got it new used from someone on marketplace didn’t notice all the cracks at first had only seen one of them and it wasn’t a full straight threw crack once I got it home I noticed it being as bad as it was. I think I might just get another one unless frames aren’t to expensive

For 129.99 I would buy a new one any day over repairing…

I would put this one for sale on marketplace and offer it as a reptile  or critter tank.  You should be able to get your money back.

between the labor and time/headaches to locate the frames, a new tank seems a bargain in comparison…

Agreed with @Pepere. Get a brand new 75 between now and 04/01/23 while Petco has them 50% off. Inspect the silicone seals and the trim before walking it up to the counter. Sell the current one for whatever you paid for it to get your original money back. Simply be transparent with your sale that it’s cracked and shouldn’t be used to hold water.
