There are tons of these things (eggs/cocoons) throughout the gravel. The adults are still there too. They just shy away from the light... Earthworms can live underwater indefinitely, since they respire through their skin. As long as the water is oxygenated enough, and it's not too hot. I've always like the sound of 'wormlings'....
