Heyo, I just started a colony of 10 cherry shrimp & I plan on letting them breed uninterrupted in my 44g. I don't plan on culling & I heard that they will revert back to a brownish color if you don't take out the less colorful ones. I'm okay with them reverting back but I'm curious as to how many generations they will stay a redish color.

I think the addition of cherry shrimp will help them feel safer too!! 🙂
You were absolutely right! I added some cheery shrimp now they're having a shrimpee party lol

The next benefit for me is that I find there is less bloating. Some fish like cichlids, goldfish, bala sharks etc, they will eat pellets so fast, that they aren't hydrated yet, and then can expand inside the fish. Being that repashy is already hydrated I find it helps against this quite a bit. A fish who wants to overeat though will still overeat.
That's a really nice benefit. I didn't know that ty for the info!

I read Aquarium Co-Ops FAQ for quarantining shrimp & snails but I have a couple questions. Do I need to quarantine cherry shrimp if there are no other existing shrimp in the tank? Also, when it says "Dwarf shrimp can sometimes carry diseases" can those diseases be transferred to fish or only other invertebrates? If the diseases are transmissible to fish would I still need to quarantine if there are no existing fish in the tank for the time being? I know some diseases/parasites can't survive long without a host so would they die out if there's no fish in the aquarium for about a month?

I make enough to last 2 weeks and stick it in the fridge.
Would 2 weeks be the max you can store it in the fridge or do you think it could go longer?

I was cycling a 9g Fluval flex with $100 worth of Anubias. I used a VERY fine black sand substrate that kept making its way into the internal filter. I wanted to change it out so bad but I didn't because I didn't wanna move the Anubias and hardscape around. I ignored the tank for a while and let it cycle. Then when I checked back on it I noticed that all rhizomes on my Anubias had developed Anubias rot. 😖 But I finally had a reason to change that awful sand. I learned two valuable lessons that day - never use very fine sand & check all the rhizomes on your Anubias

I like to ability to customize repashy. I can purée veggies and stick it in.
That's smart! I'ma have to buy some just for that reason

I did just get a vacuum sealer so I will be able to freeze some.
Out of curiosity what would happen if you froze it without a vacuum sealer?

The other side of the coin is I wish that other shrimp ate algae like my amanos!
That would literally be my dream species of shrimp. Hopefully the hobby discovers a breed that fits the bill

😂 It's definitely not possible to have tooooooo many. Maybe that's just me?
I mainly got them as algae eaters lol. I wish it was possible for them to breed them in freshwater but since they can't I'm opting for mainly cherry shrimp. I'm super fascinated by their life cycle. I also like the dynamic it creates where some shrimplets get eaten yet some survive. There's just something about creating a sustainable food chain that intrigues me.

Heyo I have a few quick questions about Repashy.
So are there any real benefits of using Repashy (Repashy Community Plus) over other types of community food such as sinking pellets and wafers? Or is it just one of those things where it doesn't hurt to have variety?

How many shrimp are there? My best guess is they're being timid, and the tank is big so maybe they're just not comfortable yet. I would guess the higher their numbers the more comfortable they will be
Good point. There are a total of 9. I didn't want to get too many Amano shrimp because I have cherry shrimp on the way and I didn't want to lose too many shrimplets to predation.

Give them few days of a break from food And see what happens after that break.
I’m probably gonna hold back food for around 4ish days

They were definitely out exploring when the lights went dim but a couple were still hanging out by the heater

What is your food that you offer them? If you can, try an algae wafer
I feed a mix of Xtream wafers, Xtream shrimpee sticks and crab cuisine. I just fed about 20 minutes ago and nobody in the tank would eat it (mystery snails & Amanos). I’m starting to think that they’re just full off of biofilm and algae.

Heyo everyone!
I have a couple questions about Amano shrimp. I've never kept them before so I'm not sure if these are normal behaviors. My Amano shrimp almost never leave the heater. My theory is that since the heater should technically be the warmest place in the aquarium that bio film grows there the fastest. Which would make sense because I can see them eating it. However, there isn't an infinite amount of biofilm available on the heater so shouldn't they find else where to eat? I'v tried raising the temp of the tank thinking they maybe they were cold but they still continued the behavior. My second theory is maybe I'm being impatient. They've were added about 2 weeks ago, maybe they feel safest hanging out by the heater. My second question is they don't seem to eat much. Considering the fact that Amano shrimp are known to be voracious eaters this seems strange. I've only ever seen them eat actual shrimp food once or twice. Sometimes they'll make their way over to where food is, take a couple bites then swim off back to the heater. There are no predators in the tank either and the tank is heavily planted. At the moment the only other inhabitants are mystery snails.
*Edit* - They are juveniles and do not appear to be sick
Parameters:
44 gallons
Ammonia - 0 ppm
Nitrites - 0 ppm
Nitrates - 10 ppm
pH - 7.4 - 7.6
GH - 200-250 ppm
KH - 80 ppm
TL;DR
Amano shrimp almost never leave the heater & they aren't eating much.

Either case, it's a beautiful fish and the patterns are amazing.
I totally agree! These fish are super cute & I'm excited to add them to my aquarium. Thank you for linking resources 🙂

Heyo, I ordered these Julii Corydoras but the website doesn't say if they're true or false Juliis. I personally can not tell from these pictures, can anyone identify them?

Depending on how long they are in transit you may want to feed a day or so before meds.
Thank you for the tip! Just so I understand correctly; put them in quarantine > feed for 1 or so days > then dose meds?

You bring them in, dose meds, the fish get 2-3 days without food. Then feed lightly?
Yes

If they come in at the same time, you can QT them together. If they come from different sources, I would QT them separately.
They're coming from the same source but do you think a 9 gallon can handle the bioload of 7 platties and 6 Corries for 1-2 weeks?
Edit* I'm only going to feed lightly once on day 3

Thank you! I have a bunch of those storage totes for my spare equipment idk why I didn't think of that

I have a a shipment of fish coming in later this week and I need advice on the best method of quarantining. I have a dedicated 9 gallon tank I use for quarantine. I'm not sure if it would be appropriate to quarantine 7 platties and 6 Julii corys together for 1-2 weeks in such a small volume of water. If need be I can set up an "emergency" 10 gallon quarantine tank with spare equipment to split them up but it wouldn't be ideal for my living situation & I'm not sure I trust this 10 gallon to hold water. I really don't want to wake up to a blown-out/leaking aquarium.
I'm going to use the med trio and feed once lightly on the 3rd day of quarantine.
Any suggestions?
Bioload of Mystery snails?

I keep reading on the internet that mystery snails have a big bio load but how big are we talking? Is it a big bio load like a goldfish? Or is it just a big bio load for a snail? I really like snails and I'm looking to add more but I don't want to over stock. I already have 5 mystery snails and two nerite snails in my 44g.
