  1. Hi everyone! I apologize this is so long. This isn't the whole story.....but here is where we are. (All of my other fish died after acquiring a betta...who had worms....and popeye. Clem is my lone survivor)

Clem is 4, I got him at my local fish store. Before getting ill he was in a 40 gallon tank with filter, O2, heater.  He is/was extremely constipated with parasites. After posting his tail was becoming increasingly red/purple. I tried metroplex (I had tried many others)

What I've also been doing and has slowly helped.....

epsom baths 2 x a day. Complete change of water each time. *(I did the epsom bath in the current water he was in....and i refilled a new bucket with fresh dechlorinated water and meds in it)

After a week in he wasn't pooping so i verrrry gently began slightly massaging his belly just a tiny bit in the epsom salt bath.  It seemed to help however, his scales had been deteriorating (he was losing them)and he did lose a few on his sides. (I did not rub on his scales....)but it seemed to help him poop a little bit.
No food until 3 days ago.

Tonight....he's doing quite a bit better. He's swimming quite a bit.

food for the past few days:

He's eated a few peas and a few medicated pellets.

Tonight I mixed up some more of the Fendebendzole with focus and pellets and he ate a few. I also found these worms. I did use bloodworm liquid to mix the food....but I'm nearly certain I didn't drop any in the water.

Nothing looked alive except for this one little gross flea like thing......I'm currently researching.

    Pics to come.

this has been months but something is worsening. He’s in the corner a lot but sometimes swims.

he is wirh a young oranda whinhas begun losing scales and stresses.

    This has been months.
scale scraps look like little hairs growing out

I’ve tried gen cure, e em, prazi pro before

now I’m using fende….whatever  the dog dewormer

    He’s 4 years old

Been using the dog dewormer in food for a week

  3. Thank you so much! I do have salt in there. I should get the fritz stuff to have on hand because it’s recommended here.

I love out the first dose in and now he’s yawning…good or bad?

  4. Hello everyone. I hate being in the disease section. I'm embarrassed to be here again. Months ago I was here with parasite issues. Folled Colu's instructions but not realizing I reinfecting from my python.

I am having a problem with Clem my goldfish. He returned to the top of the tank after each treatment.

I thought maybe Infection? I started general cure. seemed to help but then the top breathing started again. Switched to em erythromycin and seemed to work but he ended up back there.

Finally I read about bacterial gill infection. Tried API fin and tail. After the two rounds of treatments he began to swim lots much more active. I do have airstones. I also have salt in there 2 tablelspons to 5 gallons. Looking at pics he seemed to have the streaks lightly a few weeks ago.

Completed FIN AND TAiL!!!!! NOW HE IS doing well for a week or so. He's Swimming wonderful, eating, not top breathing. He is still doing an occasional yawn which I wondered if he's lungs were healing.

How long until red streaking goes away?

After all the meds and treatments and water changes my tank has elevated ammonia. I've been treating with prime for that. I know pristine water is essential.

Do I need to do anything else? Another treatment of fin and tail?

Thanks...tried to make it as short and sweet.4439BA42-012A-4998-B0B7-BA6747489CAE.png.7869d5590fe5cb6b4f66bf0975dee995.png

  5. Update! Birdie is doing great.  Very active, seems happy, swimming really wonderfully!  The white spot on her tail is fading and the few dark lines have disappeared.

It's been two weeks since she arrived.  Is it safe to put her in my larger tank with my big guy Clem? She's just doing so well and I know he's bored and  I want to put them together. Thoughts?

It did make a huge difference in her shyness when I added a few small mirrors around the tank. She's almost coming up to hand feed...I know she will get there!

    thanks!

Look at those big beautiful eyes. I love Goldfish. I always had bettas and I now have a goldfish and I am in love with her. Have you named yours yet?

her name is birdie! She’s super cute though, yes, right? She seems to be doing super. The little mirrors I placed around the tank have really helped!

Is it a goldfish only tank? If it is then there might be benefits to removing the heater.

Really? I know they don’t need to have the heater but the second day she was breathing kind of fast so I thought maybe it was causing a lower level of o2?

Could this help with her tails? Ty!!

  8. Thank you!!

the white thing seemed to be fading but now there are 3 black lines from it. I have a video but it’s not great and here are a couple pictures.

my betta has a growth on him that started like this not with lines but just a funky tumor or something and it’s prob coincidental right?

she has been doing great these past few days. I put a few little mirrors around the tank and she is swimming like crazy. She is eating and pooping!

Those big tails do get a bit bashed at times so don't worry they should heal up pretty quickly in clean water. Same goes for occasional white lumps

Ick looks like salt grains on their bodies at first not lumps on tails in my experience. If you get better pics of the area then do post.

    She looks healthy me

  9. Thanks you guys!! She is still super shy but here is the latest….

j used the med trio in the tank.I put her in after acclimating and she was very shy so I covered up the tank a bit and I have slowly increased the lights.

On Friday she seemed to be tipping a bit and still super shy. She was breathing rapidly so I got scared and completely changed the water with no meds. I also noticed UGH the heater was off.

Saturday (yest) she seems better. Smiling around more. Not hiding. I tried feeding her and I think she ate a couple of pellets that landed near her. One little poop.
*******I’ve noticed one white dot on her back fin. It looks a bit raised slightly. Would this be ick? I tried getting a picture but it was difficult. Orange fish with the one white growth?********

Today she’s still shy!!! She ate a few pellets excitedly tho!  So cute.

Her tail fins I’ve noticed are thinning and a bit frayed. The very edges. I noticed this when she came. I thought clean water would clear that up. I will check the million of pictures took that are all blurry!

  10. Hi!! I’m very excited and nervous that I just received my baby oranda goldfish from goldfish island. I never imagined doing this. But I have millions of questions….

I have a 20 gallon quarantine set up. It has the med trio and water but it is not cycled.

i have my other goldfish in his 40 gallon tank with cycled media but I had been treating the tank for parasites and I’m afraid to use the media. I know I should have cycled this first but I wanted to order before it got too cold.

It took me a long….months to cycle it because I was changing water too much.

He is currently floating in the bag he came in!!!EDDF48A9-5EED-443D-A1DB-3C8C13DD4707.jpeg.be04b1fbddf74f6c06fe8ffc724ad865.jpeg

  11. This morning he was all over the place! I guess he’s just doing something new perhaps? He becomes very still like he’s sleeping. Not gasping but just under the water and would swim off. If I approach the tank he swims right off.

  12. Hi! I was rereading one of my last messages and he wasnt going to the top of the tank at all. Today he has been! Is it normal? He never hung out up there.  It doesn't look like he's gasping but just hanging still...and then swims off etc. How much time should he be up there

should I have been treating with another dose of treatment? LIke the general cure or something? or not because there aren't any parasites noted.

    Thank you!

I'm in love with him. I want a huge tank with goldfish in my living room. Someday, when the kids are old enough to not need their tower of toys anymore...

Awwwe thanks! He is really fun when I’m not worrying. I only have 40 gallons now. He had a little friend but she passed away a few months ago so I’d love to get him another. I’d love a bunch too but 😬

My kids are over 20’s…..I recall the towers!!! I’m sure you’d be great with them since you already know what you’re doing!!! Lol! It’s been a slow road for me. I’m a nurse and I think I’m fairly educated but man, I’ve messed up along the way.

He is doing great tonight!!! Much much more active.

I’d like to see your guys!

    He’s sooooo gorgeous!

The closeup pics showed how pretty his scales were, but the vid shows off much better how gorgeous he is overall!

Is he!!???! I mean I think he is but…I’m the mama. lol!

here is what’s up now! Different things perhaps normal?

He’s not at all going to the top of the tank at all and not really continual yawning!! Great news! Before this last treatment he was “yawning” a lot! +10 a minute and the surface breathing.

hes been constipated since I used that last dewormer  he pooped  a lot and then seemed to very little and then the white poops came!! Very odd for him! (Will include picture) I’ve given him some peas which didn’t seem to help  then this morning holy mackerel!! This is so much poop and looks like it was white pieces until the green began move through

I noticed one scale last night and then I recalled something!! The scale thing seemed to start after I had finally got my tank to cycle my nitrates were super high  I cannot remember but if was high. I did water changes and my cycle stopped  the nitrates seem to be a common denominator?

It look me a very very long time to cycle my tank. I was doing water changes nearby daily for months because I kept seeing ammonia. I’m a slow learner!

  15. Mr. Odd Duck,

Thank you so much for your hand holding here. I AM focused on parasites. I understand everything you've said and it all makes sense. I have done plenty of deworming treatments.I don't get the red threads tho he does have some red silk plants which I have removed. I used to have some real plants in there but he ate them all.

I will concentrate on his water/tank and food and his adorableness. 🙂 I look forward to getting to know everyone outside of this disease section.

    I truly appreciate your help!

Anchor worms  inbed in the side of your fish do they look this have you got a picture of the fish

I did exactly this. And those worms looked like that which were expelling. This is what they looked like as he was pooping them out (I thought). Quite long like white a piece of chopped coconut. Thank you!

thank you so much for your help! Thanks so much for listening to me yammer. I will reply to each thought after them!

But I truly do NOT see any parasites in your pictures.  Parasites will be alive and moving.  If you are not seeing movement they are NOT worms and most definitely not parasites.

🙂But if I"m treating them wouldn't they be dead?

The red and white that are in the picture together look like fibers, not worms at all.  I can even see some twist in the big clump of white fibers, like thread has.

🙂 Where ever would he get these threads? The red threads in these minuscule poop samples?

I definitely don’t see parasites that are likely to cause respiratory symptoms.  Tapeworms don’t cause respiratory issues and would not make your fish need to breathe at the surface.

🙂This is so good to hear. It was a big change for him to be at the top.  I'm noticed recently when he is up there he isn't gasping water. He's under the water and no mouth on top. I do have 3 airs stones as well.

No intestinal parasites will cause that.

🙂  Overmedicating can cause that.  Please take a step back from panic and just focus on excellent husbandry for a while.  I’m sorry to have given deworming advice without being more specific about whether I thought you were truly dealing with parasites or not. ALso please don't be sorry for a second. Your experince is great and I trust what your are telling me.

I’m sorry I didn’t realize everything that’s been going on with your fish.  I don’t generally read the diseases section since I already see too many sick and dying animals at work, I don’t like to see it when I’m off work, too.  I usually only get involved if someone tags me.  Which I don’t mind, I just don’t want to get involved in every single case since it gets to be too much overall.

🙂 I absolutely agree. It triggers me so I don't come reading. I should just skip this section.

Now that you’ve mentioned the scale loss and breathing, I remember seeing some of your other posts.  I think you might just need to stop treating, do weekly water changes of at least 25%, and just watch your fish for a few days and tell me what you’re seeing.

    🙂 Currently he isn't pooping much.  😞

Test for everything daily (pH, ammonia, nitrite, nitrate - make very certain to shake the nitrate reagent bottles very well) for at least a week and post up results for me, please?  I’m sure you’ve posted about your testing results before, but can you please review them for me so I can give more intelligent and appropriate advice?

🙂 Yes I will do this. I appreciate this so much!. I've started a little blog to explain what has gone on completely in proper form. I will post here as well.

Testing: (last nights numbers. these were strips though. I will use the master test kit next. I just wanted to get back and reply)

This could just as well be from diet changes as from parasites.  Go back to feeding a steady dieto o, of a formulated goldfish food for the next week, please, while doing daily testing.

🙂 Which do you think? I've been feeding repashy occassional and a standard pellet as well.  I am really thankful for your help! Obviously I'm a newbie but....I'm going on the second year. I started out changing the waster anytime I had ammonia for which was daily. There really is so much info out there. I should stick around and read. I joined the youtube channel.

Hi! I'm sorry for taking so long to get back here. First off, thank you so much for the help! Super appreciate it. Just a couple of points I had forgoten to ask. If I'm killing the worms or whatever parasite wouldn't they be dead?
