There are many resources. I’d start easy with s video like this…

Then check out some older videos from Corvus Oscen…

Key is getting it set up correctly. Basically, it drains down to a sump tank, goes through a bunch of filtration steps — including particulate catching, bio rings, planted nitrate sucking, etc — then gets pumped back up the lift  return to the main tank.

Wow...thank you so much! I will definitely check these vids out!😊

I’d get a 20gallon tank and make that the sump tank.

Joey at king of diy has a couple videos on actually making a sump

Awesome! I will start with the vids you guys recommended! Thank you so much for your help!😊

This is what's sold as a "Reef Ready" tank. These tanks have the overflow built in with the bottom of the tank drilled for the overflow piping. Looks to have some custom piping setup.

That's pretty awesome! I might have to clean it up a bit more and make a sump for it. Thank you for your help! 😊

Is it drilled through the glass? Bottom? Looks like a standard overflow system to connect with a sump.

See if your neighbor has another tank that night have been the sump.

    Good thinking.

Even if they don’t, the worst part of setting up a sump is done.  And it would be amazing as an African cichlid tank.

Yes, @Fish Folk, it's drilled through the glass in the bottom.

No, I don't think she has a sump. She said she couldn't figure it out and that's why it's been sitting in her garage for a few years. I don't have a sump either. What do you guys recommend I should do?

  3. Hey guys!

I rescued a 55g tank from my neighbor. It has been sitting in her garage for a few years, never cleaned it out either, so there are a lot of calcification spots. Her tank is a little different than the typical ones, from my understanding by cleaning it today, there is self-draining system as well as a pvc pipe for refilling the water, but I could not seem to figure out the idea of it. Please see pictures below:

(This is the overall of the tank, pretty decent I would say.)

(This is the front side of the section where there are self-draining and filling systems.)

    PXL_20220508_191652262.jpg.99c4e3a8458f0ba3ece80aa0c8e550b3.jpg

(This is where it boggles my mind, how come the water level from the left side is not synchronized with the right? Is there anything that I'm missing?)

Not sure if anyone out there would know what type of tank this is and how this works. I hope to figure this out before adding a few cichlids in.  Thank you so much! 😊

This light will fail and the warranty won’t cover it. It is not totally v sealed and will get water in it and fail. I know tha many people don’t like to see the light but I would put a clear top and have the light sit as close the the to as you can. I use Lexan fuck cories talked about our products that have higher par rates. Almost any light is going to fail quickly put in a steam bath

THANK YOU for letting me know about the Lexan! I have been wondering what they are called!!! Now I found it!! I will definitely get it for my holding tank, and see how that works out.

I do worry that because of the constant moisture, the life of the lights will be shortened. I have to put this into my consideration.

Superglue and silicone have a very high heat deflection temperature. I’d try the silicone first because it’ll be easy to remove if it doesn’t work. I’m in the marine trades and we use a lot of different adhesives for different surfaces. Silicone is the weakest, but the easiest to remove.

Thank you, I will definitely give it a try!

I haven't used the beamswork light specifically, but I have cooked other lights by putting them inside aquariums (and other enclosed spaces). It looks like it has an aluminum casing so if its using that as a heat sink, adhering it to plastic lid will insulate it and hurt some heat transfer.  I would check operating temperature in open air and then once you mount in under the hood to make sure you're not causing yourself problems.

I would also be concerned about how waterproof that light is.  It may not work well in that high humidity.

Thank you for sharing your thoughtful consideration. I have not checked the operating temp, I will definitely do so.

This is going to be the big thing. I would slant towards having a glass top if you can find one from the vendor who made your tank or have one made for your tank.  It's totally worth it if you can find one.

this one *might* work.  Aqueon is good about releasing dimension sheets.

Thank you so much for your detailed info! I think I will play around with my plastic lid knowing that there are glass lids out there if I mess up. lol...

There is a variety of "plastic adhesive" that would work and should bond the plastics to one another. That being said..... I worry about the chemicals added to the tank and long term viability given how wet that atmosphere is going to be.

There might be some heat dissipation requirements to make sure the light doesn't melt the plastic.

I would just use silicone on each end of the light. Easy to remove it if you need be and that light won't go anywhere, also gives you the ability to have an air gap if need be. (apply a dot of silicone and let it dry, similar to a bump on, and then put the light on place and use the silicone as needed to attach the light like it's hot glue)

Considering silicone is widely used for fish tanks, it is a safe option. I happen to have a tube for shower/bathtub purposes, so I will definitely give it a try before drilling holes. Thank you very much for your input!

the heat is probably going to soften the adhesive long term.  If it were me I'd carefully drill a hole near the edge of the aluminum light enclosure.  You can then either tap or use self taping screws to screw the lid into the top.

I absolutely did not think of the heat factor! That is a good point! I will take the aquarium lid off and check it out. Thank you so much!

  8. Good day!

I am thinking of changing the light bar that came with the TopFin Bowfront Aquarium. The white LED is too bright and white to my liking.

As the pictures shown below, you can see how it is attached to the hood, but I would like to use my Beamswork light, which is much wider and does not come with anything for me to secure it under the aquarium hood. I tried using outdoor double-sided tape, it's either I got a dud or because of the built-up moisture, the light bar eventually fell from the hood. I would like to keep the aquarium hood, so I can't use the extendable "arms" to "hug" both sides of the tank. I'd appreciate any creative and practical ideas.

    Thank you!

Today I finished the frame of the stand for my next tank a 7x1x1 3/4ft

I picked the tank up cheap, its got a few scratches etc, but for $150 im not complaining.

I also went to the beach for a walk with the better half and collected about 60lt of pumice stones.

I found some platy fry today while I was doing maintenance. Hopefully they will make it, the tank has rams and tetras but it also has a ton of plant cover so maybe at least a few can run the gauntletIMG_20220308_151856630.jpg.c62f681549b8b001ca4278df515cd91f.jpg

I recently also got platy fries too!! Can't wait for them to grow up!

Thank you so much for the information and help! I'll be sure to keep an eye on the new one. She/he seems to be adjusting well, but will definitely continue to watch closely.

Hey @tcamp1208, I am wondering how your 3 males are getting along? I got 2 brothers a few weeks ago, thinking to get a powder blue, but not sure if they would get along ok. So I am here to see if you could share some update on them? Thank you!

I have been watching a few youtube videos on various aquarium/fish topics...one thing that stood out to me is some people after gravel vacc'ing, they throw declorinator (Prime or whatever they prefer) in their tank and then just fill the tank straight from the tap.  I have always thought you need to decloronate the water first...then fill the tank with that water that you treated.  Am I doing it the old school way?  Maybe I have been doing it wrong all these years?? I am always hauling buckets back and forth with water changes.  I just feel like the water that is coming straight from the tap would hurt my fish.

I do the same like you. Sunday is always my water change day, and I haul buckets from the bathroom to my tanks back and forth. I pre-mix the conditioner before putting them in the fish tank. I just don't want to harm my fish. But after reading the comments, I might try their methods because my back is killing me every time I do water change.

  12. I got this 36g tank a few weeks ago and now it is being cycled.  In the meantime, I purchased 2 female Neon Dwarf Gouramis, 1 Blue Ram Cichilid and 1 Butterly Ballon Molly(that was all they had >.<), they are currently being quarantined for about... I think this is the 3rd week. Other than those fish, I have a few surviors from the Ich outbreak: 2 Green Lantern Platies, 1 Serpae Tetra(acting like a platy). I introduced them this week, and so far they have been getting along pretty well. So now I am thinking to get more fish to be put in my quarantine tank after I put the above-mentioned fish in the 36g tank.

I am thinking of getting male flame dwarf gouramis, but I don't know if I want to risk it because people say they fight a lot. I would like to pick out some fish that are no bigger than the dwarf gouramis because I would like them to be the center piece type of fish. I know you would recommend tetras, but I would like to pause on tetras for a while since I lost a lot of them from Ich. So I'd appreciate if you could share any ideas in mind. Thank you!

  13. I originally had the same idea of having a patio pond, but we live in Michigan, it gets cold in the winter. My husband still likes the idea, and he said comet goldfish would be good for our warm season, and then when it gets cold, he would donate them to the pet store. But judging the size of your pond, you might not be able to fit that many goldfish in. I would say Zebra Danios is a pretty good choice, they are not too sensitive to the water pH and hardness.  Here is an article for your reference:

Yesterday I introduced Frank to the platys. He has fit in very well except I think Papa is gonna get himself hurt if he keeps trying to flirt with Frank. Oh boy!

OMG...they are so CUTE!! I got 2 Gouramis sisters about 3 weeks ago, and they're currently in the qurantine tank, I can't wait to put them in my display tank! I hope all my fish get along! Yours certainly do! 👍

My amazon 36g bowfront is coming along great. Driftwood finally doesn’t float and corys moving substrate constantly. So had some plant issues in beginning. But got it figured out now and things are staying in place now. Yay!! Also one fry has thrived all on its own in the tank finally spotted him the other day when re doing plants.

Awesome tank! I got a 36g recently, and now it's being cycled! I absolutely LOVE your driftwood! What other fish are you planning to add into the tank?

Brand new tank is what it sounds like, with no established filter media?

What are your water parameters from the tap, and also in the tank?

My water parameters were ok. It turned out to be the water prime I use. Thank you. 🙂

Hi! I'm new to the forum, and new-ish to fish keeping. I was given a 10 gallon with fish in it in September of 2019 when a friend who had bought them for her kids decided she didn't want to deal with it anymore.  I've since done a ton of learning and a major makeover on the tank.

The picture with the clown puke gravel and SpongeBob decor is what it looked like when I got it. The planted photo is how it looks now.

We moved last fall and then life was weird for a while and it was all I could do to just not kill anything. But now I'm getting back to the point where I can play around with things and actually enjoy the tank again.

Since moving we have space for a bigger tank, so I'm planning on getting a 75 gallon sometime this spring or summer. I think my 4yo might be more excited than I am.

I look forward to hanging around the forum, getting to know some of you, and learning a whole lot more!

Wow!!! Major difference! What an awesome tank!! Congrats on upgrading to a 75g tank!! Please let us know what fishes are you gonna get!! And welcome to the community!🥂

The water shouldn't have a foul odor. I would do a water change.

Thank you. I did it about an hour ago. We will see what happens.

If your gravel is deep give it a stir or could it be your water conditioner prime certainly has unpleasant smell it might linger in a plastic tote.

It makes sense. Although I didn't put lots of gravel, I probably did not let the mixture totally dissolve and mix throughly, and I did think about the material of the tote too. So I'm guessing it's all of the above reasons you mentioned. I did a water change again about an hour ago, just to be safe. Thank you so much!

  19. Hey guys, I started a small quarantine tank/tote (about 5 gallon) yesterday as I got 2 Neon Blue Dwarf Gouramis and 1 Blue Ram Cichlid.  I put the water conditioner and aquarium salt mixture into the water; added pea gravel as substrate; a new PVC pipe from the Home Depot and a clay pot as hiding spots for them; I also have a submersible filter(works up to 10 gallon).

When I went and fed them today, I smelled something pungent from the tank, it's like something is rotted. But the fish are fine, they are not acting weird, they are eating ok. I gave them Hikari brand food.  I'm not sure where is the smell coming from and what causes it?  The water was not taken from my exsiting aqurium, so I'm missing something here.

Is there any theory out there to help me narrow down the cause?  Thank you!🙏
